September 7, 200619 yr Author cmon guys, he was out by a half a step. they havent really shown it in slo mo yet, but you will see. OUT. Why would you think why Marlins broadcast still haven't show the replay in slow motion. He was out, but w/e, the ump still own us a Manager! Stupid Dodger series! :mad
September 7, 200619 yr Then ESPN wonders why MLB gave TBS the extra cable package next year. ESPN is probably one of the worst things that could have happened to MLB teams in small markets. All Yanks-Red Sox, All the time serves no one. What do you think TBS is going to do next year? Last I checked TBS doesn't have a TBS2 or the capability to produce regional feeds. They'll be broadcasting the teams that bring in the best ratings and draw the best advertisers. Those don't typically include small market teams.
September 7, 200619 yr Games over. No changing things now. It was a great effort by Anibel. But the runner was safe on the last out. Just that type of bang-bang play(sort of) that an ump will call out under the circumstances. Congratulations Marlins.
September 7, 200619 yr Guys, if it mattered, you would have seen Drew protesting it. Right when it happened, he knew he was safe, and you could see it just by the look on his face, but he kept his mouth shut and walked off the field because it was the respectful thing to do. He knows why that call was made, and so should everybody else. End of story.
September 7, 200619 yr Which bring me to my next point. Wtf was Hanley doing? Listen the ESPN has nothing against the Marlins. It was the last play of a no hitter (something that hasn't been done in how many years?). It's worth noteing. Hanley almost invariably double clutches routine ground balls. As far as the last play is concerned, he was out. You can nitpick calls like this in any number of games, including no hitters. What matters is it was a bang bang play and he was called out. No hitter intact. End of story.
September 7, 200619 yr I rewound when it happened on my DVR and played it in super slow-mo (1/15th) speed and he looked out to me. I'm going to try to do the same on the ESPN replay. EDIT: Ok, I just caught the replay on ESPNews and after slowing it down it looked again like he was just out.
September 7, 200619 yr I am really starting to get the impression that ESPN doesn't like us. On days we win it is extremely hard to catch the highlights, sometimes they don't even appear. And on days we LOSE, we are the first thing mentioned, what is up with that. Anyone else notice this? Now they say that he was actually safe by a step, what is the deal? F**ckin' haters.....Nerds..I AM GETTING PISSED.
September 7, 200619 yr FWIW, the midnight one Ravech led it off saying to the naked eye he looked safe, but the replays show he was out by half a step.
September 7, 200619 yr FWIW, the midnight one Ravech led it off saying to the naked eye he looked safe, but the replays show he was out by half a step. Yep, I heard that too. End of this little controversy.
September 7, 200619 yr if every strike were a strike, every ball were a ball it wouldnt be baseball. that is the ironic beauty of this game.

September 7, 200619 yr They just said the replay showed he was out by half a step. I guess TSwift and I were the only ones watching the 12:00 BBTN.
September 7, 200619 yr Scope it out, our boy is in the front page of MLB.com! ANIBAL SANCHEZ IS KING!
September 7, 200619 yr If anyone would try to tarnish the no no by saying he was safe at first, you can easily say, he forced a routine groundball right to the shortstop, so he deserves it 100% anyway.
September 7, 200619 yr Scope it out, our boy is in the front page of MLB.com! ANIBAL SANCHEZ IS KING! When you throw the first no-no in over two years, you're gonna be king for at least a day.
September 7, 200619 yr David Pinto of Baseball Musings disagrees with your ESPN Update: The call at first base was very close. When I saw it real time, I thought Byrnes beat the throw. I just watched it twice with Tivo slow motion, and the throw just got Byrnes by a hair. Great job by Sanchez. The Marlins improbable season continues.
September 7, 200619 yr the shot espn kept showing made it look like he was safe but if you saw a different angle he was out
September 7, 200619 yr some of you people owe an apology to the umpire, Jerry Meals. Bang, bang play. Umpire made the right call, no hitter or not. Props to him. Good job on some of you believeing what you want and not the truth. You owe Jerry Meals an apology.
September 7, 200619 yr This is gonna sound weird but....... Did anyone else think it was strange that Byrnes attempted to get to first base faster than humanly possible? His team is out of the Wild Card race. I know its his MO to flail his body around uncontrollably but he hit a routine grounder to SS. Whats the point? I know this sounds strange. I might be alone in this but I was just curious if anyone else felt the same. Congratulations Anibal. Freaking awesome man.
September 7, 200619 yr He looked safe to me and Dan Uggla questioned the error call on BBTN when he was interviewed. Either way, it was a great game and neither play matter much now.
September 7, 200619 yr Well, for those of us who watched it, the error call was a no-brainer. It was unfortunate (at the time) that Miggy was charged with the E when Jake could have made a better effort at staying on the bag, but the baserunner clearly would have been out with an adequate throw. Easily. I'll agree that the final out looked bang-bang when ESPN showed it at normal speed, though on Cold Pizza they revealed that ESPN's video geeks actually examined the footage frame-by-frame and were "positive" that Byrnes was out. They showed a fuzzy looking frame of the ball presumably in Helms' glove (it wasn't in the air) and Byrnes' foot still not on the bag. I'd say it looks deceiving in real speed because Byrnes was running fast enough to beat the throw. Unfortunately for him, he had to cut short his last couple of steps so he could catch the bag in stride.

It isn't too hard to understand why Byrnes ran down the line as hard as he did. The D'Backs have been on a terrible run since last month, going from Wild Card contention when we first played them in Arizona to now looking forward to 2007. Last night's game marks the nadir for Arizona this season and about all they can hope to do now is play the spoiler for the rest of the year. I am just glad the question of whether he was safe or not was settled for the doubters by slow motion instant replay. He was safe. You would think that the BBTN crew would have checked the instant replay before questioning the last out. They must have questioned it at least 3 times during the 10-11 pm BBTN broadcast. At least they later corrected their mistake questioning the call, sometime after midnight.
