June 2, 200719 yr Well he said he could win 16 games...lets see him deliver on that promise. That means that he has to win 11 games come October...
June 2, 200719 yr He needs to control his emotions better somtimes. Tommy mentioned how teams are going to start calling for time/stepping out of the box, just to slow him down or piss him off. He needs to understand why they're doing it, and not let them get the best of him. He needs to prove to them that it won't affect him.
June 2, 200719 yr I know there are people who don't want to admit it, but how much of this has to do with not having a fire-breathing Girardi on his back, but rather a weak-willed Fredo?
June 2, 200719 yr I know there are people who don't want to admit it, but how much of this has to do with not having a fire-breathing Girardi on his back, but rather a weak-willed Fredo? I don't think Fredi's laissez-faire attitude over the temper tantrums are a good thing.

I am pretty bummed about the marlins "young and promising" staff. ... and still people say to trade Willis because he is expendable ... well he has been the only one still hanging around, the only one who wins ballgames and the only one who doesnt seem to go down. Thats why he's a great pitcher.

I didnt mention this early because Ive been known to be very pro-Girardi and I didnt want to get into "that" discussion again. Olsen needs someone ridin his a** constantly until he gets it together. And who's gonna bust his eye out now that Messy is gone?
June 2, 200719 yr The problem with our young pitchers is that none of them really have elite level talent and perhaps their true colors are showing now. It worries me that this organization has valued pitching so much yet we haven't obtained many pitchers with absolutely sick stuff.

June 2, 200719 yr Makes perfect sense. is that a joke? No. Olsen is younger than Mitre, has much better stuff than Mitre, and will have a much better career than Mitre. Let me preface this by saying that I belive everyone is entitled to their own opinons without being ridiculed. I hope this doesn't come off as an attack, but you are just so biased against some players on this board. Olsen has never had a stretch like Mitre is having. As for the age, Mitre is only 26, 27? It's not like he is old. As for Olsen's stuff, I haven't seen it. All of his breaking pitches hit the dirt, and like last night he tends to hang the change up and it gets hit hard. He has nothing on Mitre's sinker. On top of that Olsen is somewhat of a head case. It's not like you are clairvoyant or have a crystal ball that tells you the future. You can't possibly now that Olsen is going to have a better career than Mitre. Sure, you can have an opinion, like anyone else, but to state it as fact is just foolish. The fact is that Mitre is a much better pitcher than Olsen is right now. I'm sorry that you feel Mitre is garbage because that is far from being the case and the facts just don't back that opinion up.

June 2, 200719 yr I think it's kind of funny how people don't understand that when you post something it is obviously your opinion even if you don't state it as such. Of course Spike doesn't have a crystal ball to see into the future, nobody does. We are all posting our opinions, and we shouldn't get flamed for doing so just because we don't say "In my humble opinion". You are arguing with his opinion, and thats great, but who cares if he states it as fact or not. Obviously it isn't fact, and it shouldn't offend you so much.
June 2, 200719 yr I don't know why some of you always feel the need to jump on some player's bandwagon and act like you have to hate another player. They're all on the same team. You can root for them all to do well. As far as Mitre goes, how can someone suggest he doesn't have good stuff when his sinker is killer? The sinker is such a great pitch. It breaks bats and it's hard to hit anywhere but on the ground. Visions of Kevin Brown anyone? Olsen may eventually be ok and I want him to do well, but right now he is not getting the job done and he acts like a baby. I think Joe did a great job keeping him in line. His stuff is not all that impressive to me, but when he has control of it he can effective, as he has shown in the past. Starting pitching is the key to this (and any) team's success. People like to cry about our centerfield and catcher situation, but I think the FO is correct to not make any rash moves. It would be great to add one more effective starting pitcher, but where are you going to find that? This is still a team being built for the future and if they can win this year that's great, but we should not sacrifice what will help us down the road. I think the best option is just to wait on the young pitchers to come around and see what happens.

June 2, 200719 yr ... and still people say to trade Willis because he is expendable ... well he has been the only one still hanging around, the only one who wins ballgames and the only one who doesnt seem to go down. Thats why he's a great pitcher. Completely agree.
June 3, 200719 yr Man, everyone hated Mitre 3 months ago. Funny how things change. And take it easy on Scotty... he is good. Everyone knows he's good. He has had streaks like Mitre is having right now, he has a dominating pitch like Mitre does, there's no reason to go Scotty bashing. He'll get it together, and I have a very strong belief that by the time he is 27 he will be a strong #2 on any team. I don't know why some of you always feel the need to jump on some player's bandwagon and act like you have to hate another player. They're all on the same team. You can root for them all to do well. It worries me that this organization has valued pitching so much yet we haven't obtained many pitchers with absolutely sick stuff. None of the sophomores have great stuff. I would be surprised if any of them end up as top of the rotation guys.
June 3, 200719 yr Id say two and possibly 3 of the sophomores have "great stuff" I'd say 2... Olsen and Johnson. Give up a couple years and they will be hellish pitchers somewhere.
June 3, 200719 yr I can't believe how much people have to say bad things about Olsen. He competes, and it's really refreshing to see a guy who flat out HATES the other team every time he steps on the field. He needs composure but he doesnt need to get rid of his fire. He really has nasty stuff and we saw it last year, his slider doesn't seem to have the same bite as it did last season but he can get that back. If he does then he can be a very very effective pitcher. Josh Johnson hasn't pitched yet obviously. Anibal didnt pitch so poorly he went to the minors. He pitched poorly and went to the minors and told everyone his shoulder hurt causing him to be shut down. How long had his shoulder been hurting? How much did it effect him on the mound? Not fair to classify him as a bust this year. Ive always hated Nolasco (as a pitcher), I dont see him having the stuff to be more than a #4 or #5 pitcher. He only has one consistant pitch and that is the curve. He doesnt use the change well and he cant spot his fastball, of course he is young and has plenty of time to fix that. Mitre and Kim have been great surprises this season, but I don't think it's fair to that our young pitchers are having a bad season, because the only ones out there are Mitre and Olsen. Also remember the first 'year' of a guys career he can get by just with great stuff for the most part because hitters havent seen them. When the scouting reports come out and hitters start to see them more is when they begin to learn how to pitch instead of throw. That is partly what I think Scotty is going through this season.

Sergio Mitre could win 3 straight cy youngs and Spike would still say Mitre sucks. Sergio stole Spike's bike when he was a youngin'.
June 3, 200719 yr Olsen about incident lol Olsen about the incident " That dude was talking alot of sh*t the entire game" He lets a fan effect his performance. :thumbup
June 3, 200719 yr I know there are people who don't want to admit it, but how much of this has to do with not having a fire-breathing Girardi on his back, but rather a weak-willed Fredo? I don't think Fredi's laissez-faire attitude over the temper tantrums are a good thing. Hmmm. I agree and disagree. My only complaint of Fredi this year was his lack of emotion. Like arguing obvious bad calls. But I also wouldn't want a GI Joe type attitude eiither. Scotty has concentration issues for sure. Players, umps, fans, and the defense behind him can get into his head. He needs to work on that. And I think he is. But you can't call for a meeting on the mound every pitch to calm hom down, nor can you grab him by the collar and scream at him every time between innings. He has to treated differently. I think the coaches and even DTrain are attempting to get him into a more mature type pitcher. Fredi did pull him into his office and have a discussion with uim this last episode. Just because he didn't come out of it with his eye blackened dosen't mean it wasn't an intense meeting. Do we want to see our team on ESPN over and over with scuffles in the dug out and club house like the Cubs this week end? In other words, league laughing stocks? Teams have learned that he can be gotten to. They have adjusted to him and he hasn't adjusted to them. That's the problem with looking at a rookies season and expecting the same type results the next year. And one of the reasons why I never have liked a pitcher getting the ROY award, to take it a little further. BTW Buck... Not everyone was so against Mitre. We saw him in ST games and commented on a couple boards on how good he looked.
