JUPITER, Fla. -- After experiencing some discomfort in his throwing arm, Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre will be examined by Dr. James Andrews for further evaluation.

 

Mitre is getting a second opinion, according to his agent, Paul Cobbe. On Wednesday morning, Mitre was traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to visit the renowned orthopedic surgeon.

 

Mitre initially experienced forearm muscle tightness during his first Grapefruit League game, on Feb. 28 against the Orioles in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

 

On Tuesday morning, he threw off the mound for the first time. Mitre and Scott Olsen, who is nursing left shoulder tendinitis, both threw bullpen sessions. Both were slated to throw off the mound again on Thursday.

 

Now Olsen will continue his throwing program while Mitre is evaluated to determine the extent of his forearm troubles.

 

Entering Spring Training, Mitre was projected to be in the top of the Marlins' rotation. But his early arm troubles have kept him out of action.

 

"Mitre went to see a doctor," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said, not confirming it was Andrews in Alabama. "We'll wait for him to get back and see what the results are."

 

The latest setback pretty much ends any chance Mitre had of opening the season healthy. Now, until the results are in from Andrews, it is unclear if the right-hander will miss a small or major portion of the season.

Ailing Florida Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre was examined Wednesday by a specialist who determined surgery is not needed, the pitcher's agent said.

 

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews reaffirmed an earlier diagnosis that Mitre has minor inflammation of the ulnar nerve, agent Paul Cobbe said.

 

"He needs some downtime, but there's no tear," Cobbe said. "We're not sure yet what the downtime will be."

 

Mitre is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season. He left his first spring training game Feb. 28 after facing three batters and complained of tightness in his forearm.

 

He hasn't pitched in a game since, and the decision to send him to Birmingham, Ala., for a visit with Andrews was made after Mitre threw off a mound Tuesday.

 

Mitre had one magnetic resonance imaging test earlier that didn't reveal any ligament damage.

 

He pitched well early last season, then faded after the All-Star break and finished 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts. He threw a career-high 149 innings.

Rick Vandenhurk, Chris Volstad and Ricky Nolasco will likely compete for the two spots in the back of the Marlin's rotation.

And we still have 3 weeks to go. Unsettling? It's freakin' frustrating :banghead . We can't get through a season with Mark Hendrickson as our only veteran starter. Mitre's saga is sounding alot like Josh Johnson's and who knows what's going on with Olsen. I just don't see how we will be competitive without a better rotation. Yes we may get Johnson and Sanchez back late in the season but I really hate the idea of rushing young pitchers throught he minors before they're ready. Our 2006 rookie starters pitched alot of innings and they've all had significant setbacks due to injury. We need a couple of serviceable veterans to eat innings at least until the AllStar break.

 

Rotation to start the season? Hendrickson(WHIP-2.00...ugh!), Miller(10 BB in 13 innings-ugh!), Nolasco (if he can build up his stamina by April), Hernandez, Volstad. Thats a very green bunch mixed with one underwhelming veteran. If Olsen and Mitre's injuries are serious it could be a long season.

While this is not exactly great news, this is far better than most of our pitchers visits to Dr. Andrews.

olsen, miller, hendrickson, nolasco, and vandenhurk........volstad and hernandez are not ready yet and they will go down for more work.....but man do i miss JJ and Anibal

This isn't good. We needed Mitre to eat innings to allow Anibal to recover, and for Volstad/Gaby to season themselves in the minors for a few additional months.

 

I hope the team considers Loshe, Jeff Weaver, and dare I say recently released Horacio Ramirez, to try and find a cheap 80-100 SP innings April-June.

The mechanics of pitcher need to be revamped, this is rediculous. It seems like most pitrchers in the league go through serious reconstructive surgury.

LOL One guy going down for a few weeks does not equate to the sky is falling. Gaby looked real good Saturday vs the BoSox starters. That's the only time this Spring I have actually watched him. Volstadt is having one heck of a ST. We start the season with enough off days to only need 4 SPs. Should be plenty of time for Scotty to get back in the groove if he needs it. It's disappointing news. Nothing more. And on the bright side...The team went with the best for a second opinion and he confirmed what our guys originally diagnosed. Also shows the team is being "conservative" with our arms. Much better game plan than what our ex-MOY showed us. We are still feeling reprocussions from that year.

Ugh, no Mitre for at least a month. Maybe more.

 

I didn't particularly want to rush Volstad and Gaby into the rotation this early. I didn't even want Hurk in yet.

 

Miller-Hendrickson-Nolasco then hopefully it's only a matter of one or two starts by a 4th starter until Olsen's back. Once it's time for a 5th starter there will be another decision to make, Mitre won't be ready yet.

 

And that's assuming the best-case scenario with Olsen by the way, so I'm crossing my fingers.

we prefer not bringing a starting pitcher back into a game after an hour and half rain delay TROLL

I am not the biggest Girardi fan- but both teams brought their starters back into the game after that rain delay. This is happening because we do the same thing every year since our last market correction... Outside of Dontrelle Willis- we fill our rotation with guys who have not pitched a full season above AA. And every once in a while we toss in some loser who we only wish would injure himself during the season like Brian Moehler.

 

You people think you will miss Cabrera? Bet you will be missing Mr. Willis plenty more by May when there is a different starter on the mound every 5th day. This team will have to score 10 runs a game to have a fu*king chance.
