Conine to retire a Marlin

Featured Replies

I haven't heard this anywhere else, but my mom (out of all people) apparently heard this today. She was listening to some spanish radio station and heard Felo Ramirez mention that the Marlins were signing Niner to a one day contract, to allow him to retire a Marlin. She also heard some mention of a small ceremony for him when he officially announces this...

Anyone else heard this?

It would definitely be a classy move by the organization if it's true.

I know it's unreasonable, but it would be nice if took one AB the day he signs the contract.

I love that idea, have him in uniform on openning day

Nah. Make it a Billy Crystal type thing if they do it at all. And personally I don't care one way or the other if they do it. He will always be remembered as Mr Marlin. And it's not like any of us will be making the trip to Cooperstown for his induction. He's going out quietly. And that's probably the way he wants it. Remember Hawk's final year? The ceremony at Joe Robbie? The final game he played at Wrigley? 9er dosen't seem the type of guy that would want anything like that.

Everyone wants to feel appreciated.

I would love to do something special for Niner, I think we would all agree that he deserves it.

It's the right thing to do. He's Mr. Marlin.

I hear he actually resents that label somewhat.

I wonder why. I think people use it only out of admiration for the way he played the game and for his contributions to the expansion team and the World Series teams.

I've never heard that. Where'd you?

The thing is do we retire his number? :confused

It'll be nice to finally retire one, but did he contribute enough and which number 18 or 19.

If there is some plan to market Conine as goodwill ambassador or perhaps a radio personality with his own radio call-in show or a third guy in the booth for radio or tv there might be some value to retiring his number, but otherwise not so much.

Conine to retire a Marlin

Inaugural player was member of both World Series title teams

Jeff Conine, who played 17 years in the Majors, will sign a one-day contract March 28

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Fittingly, Mr. Marlin will ultimately retire as a Marlin.

According to a source, Jeff Conine, one of the most popular players in Florida history, will sign a one-day contract on March 28, and then retire as a member of the Marlins.

Nicknamed "Mr. Marlin," the 41-year-old was a member of the team's inaugural roster, and he enjoyed two stints with the organization. A versatile performer who mostly played first base and the outfield, he was a vital part of the franchise's World Series titles in 1997 and 2003.

Conine, who resides year-round in South Florida in Weston, is scheduled to sign his one-day contract March 28, when the Marlins play an exhibition game against the Yankees at Dolphin Stadium.

The team also plans on honoring Conine during an on-field ceremony before their March 31 season opener against the Mets.

The Marlins, however, are not planning on retiring Conine's number. He actually wore two. From 1993-97, he donned No. 19. When he returned in a trade from the Orioles on Aug. 31, 2003, he was given No. 18.

He remained with the Marlins through 2005.

Conine is currently training for an Ironman triathlon competition, which is consuming much of his time these days. The team is leaving open the option of bringing Conine back to the organization in an advisory capacity.

Conine enjoyed a 17-year big league career, breaking in with the Royals in 1990. He also played for the Marlins, Orioles, Phillies and Reds before he finished up last year with the Mets.

Respected for his hard-nosed style of play and his professionalism, Conine finished with a .285 career batting average. He added 214 home runs and 1,071 RBIs.

Conine ranks among the Marlins' leaders in a number of categories. He is second in team history in games played (1,014), total hits (1,005), singles (688), RBIs (553) and total bases (1,579). He is the franchise leader in grand slams with six.

agreed...good work for by the marlins here...and why would he dislike the name "Mr. Marlin"...johnny pesky is generally referred to as "Mr. Red Sox"...its a great honor and one that would, i think, make someone smile everyday for the rest of their life

Oh...My...God! This such awesome news. My favorite player of all time is coming back for one day....my birthday. This is the greatest present ever.

Do you think Kensing will give up his number for a day?

I'm so happy.

The way it should be! I would like to think that they would save the retiring of the number honor for something like the opening of the new stadium but who knows.

I'll be there to watch his final game as a Fish. :D

And it's not like any of us will be making the trip to Cooperstown for his induction.

If he is inducted...I will be. I'm about an hour and a half away!

Two things:

1)Conine ought to throw out the first pitch at the new stadium.

2)Conine should have his restaurant somewhere in the new stadium.
