Conine to retire a Marlin

Featured Replies

And it's not like any of us will be making the trip to Cooperstown for his induction.

If he is inducted...I will be. I'm about an hour and a half away!

I think the point Bobbo was trying to make was that he won't be inducted.

Well done Niner.....a classy ending for a hell of a classy ballplayer.........a standing O for you!!!!

In recognition of Conine's contribution to the organization, the Miami Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America has established a new annual award. Starting this season, the Jeff Conine "Mr. Marlin" award will go to the player whose commitment to the game is embodied in his integrity and unselfish play.

Exactly, Rab. I saw that article this morning on the Marlins web site and was pleasantly surprised. I really didn't think he would go that route. But I am glad he is.

Two things:

1)Conine ought to throw out the first pitch at the new stadium.

2)Conine should have his restaurant somewhere in the new stadium.

1) 9er should be one of the guys throwing out the first pitch in the new pond. But there are some not very well liked individuals that worked very hard in getting that project completed that may also be in the mix for that honor. And no matter what some may think of those individuals, it is well deserved.

2) What restaurant?

Conine's clubhouse grill which is currently located in Hollywood.

It's no longer called Conine's unfortunately. He no longer has an affiliation with it and his name has been removed from the restaurant. It's just another grill now, blah.

Great, now I have no reason to go there. :confused

If there is some plan to market Conine as goodwill ambassador or perhaps a radio personality with his own radio call-in show or a third guy in the booth for radio or tv there might be some value to retiring his number, but otherwise not so much.

I totally agree. If he doesn't find a way to stay in the news until he's gray, then his playing career was meaningless.

That stinks, we were talking about going up there soon. Never mind that idea.

I remember when he announced his retirement we all called for this, but it never happened. Nice to see that it eventually did.

That's the one I thought he was talking about. But then I thought maybe he opened another eatery someplace I hadn't heard of.

Relax. The place was okay. But nothing real special. We went there once when it first opened and didn't see any reason to go out of our way to go back. Besides, I read someplace (maybe here on another thread?) that it wasn't really his. It was owned by a chain that uses (buys) local sports "heros" names to bring in folks.

Conine is going to be playing on friday 3/28 against the yankees. He wont be playing on opening day.

Where did you hear that?

I read it on the marlins website. Am I mistaken???

I don't know...a quick glance (and I mean quick...I glanced through two stories) of their site and I didn't see anything, and hadn't heard it anywhere else either. I'll take your word for it though.

"Conine, who resides year-round in South Florida in Weston, is scheduled to sign his one-day contract March 28, when the Marlins play an exhibition game against the Yankees at Dolphin Stadium."

"The team also plans on honoring Conine during an on-field ceremony before their March 31 season opener against the Mets."
