I cried for him just now

Featured Replies

from the Miami Herald:

When Sanchez does return, he will carry a burden with him to the mound.

''I'm going to be really happy and sad for other reasons. I would like my son to be with me, but he's not here anymore,'' said Sanchez, whose infant son died in December. His son was born Sept. 6, 2007, exactly one year after Sanchez's no-hitter, and died a little more than three months later.

''That's a little sadness in my life right now, but I will be happy to be back with the Marlins. He was sick from a mosquito, but,'' said Sanchez, and then his voice trailed off.

He began to get emotional thinking about the loss of his son. Sanchez wouldn't elaborate, but before he threw his first pitch Tuesday, he knelt behind the mound for a moment of prayer.

So often we forget that ballplayers don't live in a vacuum where baseball is the only thing in their lives.

I'm surprised we're hearing of it just now....I don't remember hearing about it in December, but then again, it is off-season for the ballplayers

It is a very sad sad story. To lose your first child only 3 months old has to be one of thw worst expeiernces anyone could ever go through. I admire him for coming back from such a tragedy to pitch. My heart goes out to him.

It was something that was kept very very private as per his own request.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks.

This tears me up just reading about it. He'll be in my thoughts and prayers tonight. RIP

Man this is some sad news...my prayers are with Sanchez, must be really tough on him.

That's awful, poor Anibal. :(

the entire article was very humanizing, has me rooting for him even more.

We forget that these guys are real people and that, like us, they are not immune to suffering and loss. But if you believe in what Nietsche said - "What does not destroy me, makes me stronger" - then we can take some inspiration from his courage. Even if he never pitches in the majors again, I admire him for his effort in the face of one of life's greatest tragedies - the loss of a child.

Anibal throws a no hitter, has a son born a year to the date later.

Gets injured, tragedy strikes with his son...

... what does he do? keeps on going, keeps battling to get back to the majors... thats something special
