Joe Robbie had a HUGE part in bringing baseball down here. It would have been him had he not died.

That's not the only reason I consider him an asshole.

Then he should not be bringing it up-what good does it do. I am not crying about it anymore-but he said it and it does illicit a response from those of us who care and have had to endure all the negative things that have happened since. It was the catalyst-so it is not old news, just the start of the whole sequence of events.

It's a remarkable comment from the guy who did everything in his power to destroy the franchise from a late night backroom deal with the State Senate president to kill the Marlins chance of getting state tax rebate help, or by adamantly refusing to consider amending the worst lease in professional sports and holding the Marlins to the letter of the deal.

But the "I lost $34 million..." thing really took a lot of balls to rewrite history that way while stripping the team of most of its revenue and then piling up every conceivable loss he could on the team's ledger sheet.

But that's Wayne, he hasn't changed one bit.

Right. It was proven that the team wasn't making the giant losses that he was claiming.

Oh, and you made a great point with that lease. What a bastardly thing that was. For those of you who don't know, right before he sold the team, he signed the terrible lease with HIMSELF, making sure the Marlins got the short end of the straw.

I can forgive the break up of 97---I can't forgive that unforgettable lease.

Son of a bitch

the way I see it, if he hadnt broken up the team we may not be the marlins we are today.

You mean the one that is laughed at around the league for low attendance?

I'm sorry, but MLB screwed up baseball in Florida completely by not awarding the franchise to Tampa in 1993. Not only did Huizenga screw up the South Florida scene for the long haul, but the fans in Tampa were so spited that nobody really gave a darn anymore once the Rays actually came into existence.

I disagree, they made the intelligent decision. They didn't have a crystal ball to tell then that Wayne-O was going to rip the team up after 5 years. South Florida was the biggest media market without a team and was thought to have the "premium baseball market".

The market I agree with. The problem is that they gave the franchise to a guy who saw the team only as a business asset. While they couldn't predict what he would end up doing, they should have foreseen it as a possibility. The Tampa Bay area had been absolutely clamoring for a team and its easy to say that they would have taken the time to nurture and organization if they got a chance. MLB may see things only in terms of market numbers, but the NFL has been smart in awarding those cities that show a genuine interest in maintaining an NFL franchise. Its one more reason why that sport is more popular than baseball right now.
