April 11, 200917 yr Harold Reynolds has been our advocate on MLB Channel the last few games... Nothing but love and praise from him all evening HR apparently is a guy whose opinion is going to change week to week, if not day to day. My bet is, lose a couple in a row and he will have us back taking 4th spot in the NL East. He has some good insight and does defer pitching questions to those that know more, but at times he says things that make you scratch your head. And ESPN? They are the very definition of experts that aren't. This division is going to be beating up on itself all season long. I doubt very much the Nats are the whipping boys of the division like they are currently showing. Nor do I think the Phillies are going to continue this way. To make the play offs we will most likely have to take the division.
April 11, 200917 yr what a fantastic game! i got home around 1 am so i decided to just wait until the 3am encore to watch the game. mannn was it worth it! not goin to sleep until 5 am but seeing that walkoff made it all worth while. I voted for Hanley. he had some great key at bats and did what he needed to do. this is kinda tough though cuz u could easily give it to Cantu or Boni. just love how Boni was disrupting the game causing the balk and beating out that infield single in 9th inning. beautiful stuff!! though i was surprised when Hanley hit that ball in the hole and Reyes didn't pick it clean. instead of holding it he just threw. could have turned into something more... lol Good game!!
April 11, 200917 yr I think if this team is going to have serious playoff implications, they are going to have to trade for a closer in July. What would it take? We'll see how Lindstrom continues to do, but so far I really don't feel comfortable watching him because he is pretty erratic, plus his only quality pitch is the fastball. Every major league hitter can adjust to a flame thrower if that's all he's gonna throw. If he is going to see success, he needs to start having command on his secondary pitches.

Your last 2 sentence are definitely right. I'm willing to give Lindstrom some more time before I'll feel that they ought to trade for a closer, though, because he is still coming back off of an injury. That said, if this continues into May, I'll be waving the signs right next to you. The bullpen can still turn out fine IF Lindstrom shakes off the injury (assuming that's been the cause of his being erratic), Proctor gets healthy, Nunez continues like he has, and I think Calero looks pretty solid. 4 arms that you feel comfortable with is pretty good. Pinto/Meyer/Kensing/Penn I'm not sold on by any strecth, but it's okay to have 1 or 2 guys that are mainly mop-up/inning-eaters IMO. I really wish we could've gotten a LOOGY. As a side note, Ron Villone was signed by the Nats and went straight to AAA. He's not the greatest, but why not take a shot on the guy, stash him in the minors, and see if you feel that he can contribute? Lefties have OPS'ed .612/.582/.611/.654/.629 off of Villone from 2003-2008..........
April 11, 200917 yr I called in to 790 to talk about Lindstrom's speed. I noticed that he topped off around 94 and threw mostly around the 91 to 93 range. The game before he topped off at 97 and threw 95 or above consistently. Not much of a difference I know but it looked like he was trying to get his pitch speed up and just couldn't do it. Is he sore from the injury? I was told that it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I talked to Matt Lindstrom today and he said that everything was fine in the bullpen except the last five pitches he threw before he went into the game. His forearm tightened up and he never regained his control, hence the fastball that almost hit Carlos Delgado in the head. He said that Baker calls most of the pitches and he just goes with it because he trusts Baker. I told him that until catchers get a Win Loss column in their stats that maybe he should start throwing the pitches he thinks will be effective. I basically told him that he needs to start mixing his pitches up more. Less fastballs and more sliders and split-changeups. As far as the shoulder goes he said that his shoulder is fine and is not hurting. He just wants to start feeling healthy every time out. He was glad that he didn't give up a three spot last night and kept the game within reach. He knows that he has been better and he wants to get back to that form and quickly. Lindstrom has been a lot better than his last two outings in the past. Believe me he isn't trying to suck it up, and he knows the team needs him to be better. Anyways for what it's worth I don't think we have to worry. We are 4-0 and there are 158 more games left to be played.

April 11, 200917 yr I voted for Cantu but it was a close one between him, H2R, Anibal and EB. Such a difference this season having awesome starting pitching compared to last April. And am I the only one wanting to see a race between EB and Usain Bolt??? :cheers and :lol at the race idea

Well when his fastball is going good he should use it alot but when its 93 94 its gonna get hit. Id like to see that splitter used more. Forearm tightness always worrys me.

I know you aren't a big believer in Lindstrom...yet. I hope he will change your mind when he starts dominating. He hasn't dominated yet but with his situation in spring training and in the WBC he hasn't really been able to prepare like other spring trainings, especially since he got hurt. I'm guessing he figures it out in the next few games-that is if he is healthy. I told him that he needs to throw more offspeed stuff so we will see if he listens to me in his next outing. I'll tell him that you'd like to see the splitter used more. I've tried to tell him that now for all of 08 and the 2 games he's pitched in 09. Thanks for your concern.

April 11, 200917 yr Was at a bar last night watching the game (they have a baseball package)... I went a little nuts after the game-winning hit (i was a tad drunk)... of course i was the only one going nuts.. its iowa. Was pretty funny though... definitely got some wtf looks. I like the make up of this team.. Will be nice when we get Proctor back and Lindstrom settles in. Emilio sure is fun as hell to watch.

April 11, 200917 yr Can I state that I am not the biggest fan of Matt Lindstrom? He is still essentially a 1 pitch guy.
April 11, 200917 yr his slider isn't bad although it certainly isn't a plus pitch. Considering he was in the low-90's last night, I definitely expect more out of him. Whether it's that he needs to shake off rust or he's still injured.
April 11, 200917 yr Fair enough, I just dont think he has much upside, especially as a closer. I honestly doubt he will be much different than Gregg was last year.
April 12, 200917 yr Fair enough, I just dont think he has much upside, especially as a closer. I honestly doubt he will be much different than Gregg was last year. Guys that can throw 98 can throw 87 but guys that throw 87 can't throw 98. You can't teach speed but the offspeed is definitely teachable IMO. Because he has a good faastball, if he can compliment it with above average offspeed he should be really good. IMO the upside is huge, however the confidence in offspeed pitches is what's lacking. Oh and about Gregg. He walked too many and that's what hurt in every outing. Lindstrom doesn't walk many so he is already different than Gregg from last year. He will turn it on "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." Lindstrom works hard so I don't fear.

Like I said in a previous post...guys who throw 98 can throw 87-90 but guys who throw 87-90 can't throw 98. I understand that location is key also and confidence is huge too. IMO if he gets the offspeed and confidence down he will be good, perhaps dominant who knows?

His fastball that everyone loves so much is also straight as an arrow alot of the time. I just find Lindstrom to be greatly overrated by some Marlins fans.

He will turn it on "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." Lindstrom works hard so I don't fear. I disagree. Lindstrom is already 29 years old, if his secondary stuff is mediocre at best at this point, its doubtful it will ever get much better. His fastball that everyone loves so much is also straight as an arrow alot of the time. I just find Lindstrom to be greatly overrated by some Marlins fans. I feel the same way, but since Lindstrom's a reliever, you never know. Relievers rise and fall every year, and the Marlins have gotten lucky with some in the past.
