April 15, 200917 yr so says an mlb scout Hate to be a spoilsport about a player as exciting as Marlins third baseman Emilio Bonifacio, but ... While Bonifacio is 16-for-33 after seven games, at least one scout is far from convinced that he is a keeper. "He can fly, but once teams figure him out, he's going to hit .240," the scout says. "And his glove is terrible. He's a 40-error guy at third base. "I think he's afraid of the ball, personally. If he gets buzzed and pitchers start throwing a lot of breaking balls to him, he's in big trouble. "He's just a guy." as well as a fox sports poll. 66% are saying he's overrated. go figure. an overrated marlin. :shifty Link
April 15, 200917 yr Yeah I read this too. He's gonna have to put up good number till about the as break for people to start believing in him. As for being afraid of the ball that's pretty disrespectfull if you ask me. I'd be pissed if I was emilo.
April 15, 200917 yr It wouldn't be normal if SOMEONE in the national media wasn't trying to bash us. Now we have that. BTW, that scout should be laughed out of whatever organization he's in. A "40 error guy at third"? OK, buddy. And it looked like Boni did JUST fine off a big bender guy last night in Vazquez, who is the definition of breaking balls.
April 15, 200917 yr Of course he's overrated if anyone thinks he's going to bat over .400 all year. He did look overmatched at times once Vazquez started feeding him the high fastballs. It seemed pretty obvious that the Braves got the scouting report on him, but he did still manage 2 hits. Either way, we'll ride this hot streak till its over. Go Marlins.
April 15, 200917 yr You know what's interesting, Rosenthal posted the EXACT same quote in his April 8th article. He must really want Speedy EB to fail. Bring us some new info Ken!
April 15, 200917 yr He's opened eyes thus far, but he still has work to do. The good news is he appears to have the work ethic to try to improve himself, lets face it you can't coach a player to have speed like his, he'll find a place for the next 5-10 years as long as he can run.
April 15, 200917 yr how many of those who voted in the national poll have actually seen him play, more than his few highlights on Sportscenter? He is not as good as his first week, but to predict a 40 error, .240 season is a little haterish in the other direction.
April 15, 200917 yr .240 hitter I can believe, the numbers are there. That said, I've never heard anything about him being a terrible fielder, much less a 40 error guy. This scout might be the first person to ever say this.

This scout might be the first person to ever say this. While he has never been called a terrible fielder, IIRC he has never been thought of as a particularly good fielder either. If memory serves, despite his speed he was always an average defensive 2B. Bonifacio is overrated? *Yaaawn* You might not like hearing it, but he is. Some player shine until a detailed scouting report is out on them.
April 15, 200917 yr 40 errors seems high to me. .240 seems low to me. I guess only time will tell, always nice to have one more opinion to factor into the equation.
April 15, 200917 yr 40 errors seems high to me. .240 seems low to me. I guess only time will tell, always nice to have one more opinion to factor into the equation. Agreed. Everytime I see him, I'm reminded of Castillo. His appearance, his swagger, his performance. I was one of the biggest for McPherson/against Bonifacio people during the spring here, and I couldn't be happier to say that I was wrong. Do I still think McPherson can contribute at the ML level? Of course. But am I happy with the way things have turned out? No doubt.
April 15, 200917 yr 40 errors? Even for a bad fielder that is a lot. I wonder if it was a real scout. Also, we know Boni's numbers have not been great but to assume that what we have seen is what he will be forever would remove countless quality players from ever achieving anything. Players grow, adjust, figure it out, get stronger etc. Boni will have to adjust to the high fastball and then if he can, what will they say. I am happy to watch this thing play out and that's it.
April 15, 200917 yr 40 errors at 3rd? Geez, I'm not a Bonifacio believer myself but 40 errors seems kind of over the top. As for his bat, only time will tell, as long as he gets on base I'm happy. Hopefully he keeps it up.
April 15, 200917 yr I was one of the biggest for McPherson/against Bonifacio people during the spring here, and I couldn't be happier to say that I may have been wrong. fixed :cool

April 15, 200917 yr I bet this was a scout from the nats trying to make it look like trading him was a good idea.
April 15, 200917 yr 40 errors? :lol He won't keep this up offensively, but there's no doubt, he's improved the Marlins defense A LOT already in this young season. There's definitely more range this year with him at 3B, and Cantu at 1B. 40 errors :lol
April 15, 200917 yr If Bonfacio can get on base at even a moderate rate, his speed will make him an asset because he will score on hits that nobody else will.
April 15, 200917 yr If Bonfacio can get on base at even a moderate rate, his speed will make him an asset because he will score on hits that nobody else will. Our problem is that this is a "if" with a capital I and a capital F. Before the last week, he had never shown the ability to hit major league pitching. That's the only thing about him that worries me. His potential once he gets on-base is obvious to anyone with eyes and those with ears as well.
April 15, 200917 yr Author hey! i didnt give anyone permission to capitalize or punctuate the topic name. you'll be hearing from my lawyer. :cussing
