April 26, 200917 yr Yeah let's look at those 3 careers. Mayer - former top prospect Penn - Former top prospect Calero - career 3.49 ERA in 255 games Meyer and Penn are our #6 and #7 relievers, perfect for high upside, current low production guys. The issue in our pen was Pinto and Kensing. Kensing is now gone. Badenhop isn't going to be the answer. Any word ever on Ceda yet? Where do I begin? I know I'm just pissed but honestly this pen is NOT good nor will be. Penn, while a good pickup because Andino is worthless, is not going to keep this up. He has 4 BBs in 7 IP. One game he is just going to get bombed like he has his entire career. Look at Hayden Penn's career numbers read like a horror novel- 65 IP, 91 H, 38 BB, 32 K - 8.31 ERA - YIKES! Dan Meyer is (0-6) with a 7.18 ERA for his career. Enough said. Logan Kensing has a 5.11 career ERA and chokes every moment. Nobody trusts Pinto in a close game- his career - 102 BBs in 158 IP. Nunez gets rattled easy but is perfect for a set up role. Lindstrom needs to learn how to pitch and not just throw. Calero is decent but could get hurt any moment (hopefully he's our Joe Nelson this season)- maybe he should close. Why do you keep mentioning Kensing? Ummm....maybe because he's been on the team for the past 3 years and isn't getting any better. :whistle And it's irrelevant since he's not on the team anymore. ? :whistle
April 26, 200917 yr Man one losing streak and we went from a team of destiny to the worse team ever assembled. Amazing isn't it, how soon from in Beinfest we trust to worst team/pen etc.... The pen/team is what it is, its the best team the FO can afford
April 26, 200917 yr It's amazing how many people on this board are really supportive when the team/bullpen is doing well and then when the team struggles all of a sudden that support turns into criticism as to why our team sucks. They are struggling right now, but I believe it will get better. It will start going their way soon, baseball is a funny game. Beside Rab said the team went 2-8 after a good start and then won the world series. So far the team is on that track, so what, there is a ton more baseball. What like 145 games left? We're good.

In 1997, the Marlins took 20 games to collect their 11th win. So we are still outplaying them. Remember, we dont want to win to many, NL East champs are no good, we need the Wild Card. Nenn also got his first loss, and blown save, in the Marlins 5th loss of the season. Just like Lindstrom did. Relax people its early.
April 26, 200917 yr Pinto and Kensing are the two relievers I distrust the most, and Kensing is now DFA'ed... Would it have been better for Lindstrom to have started the year at AAA due to his WBC injury? Not that he will be stellar or that I am making excuses for him, but is his arm at 100%? He never really had a spring training

The pen/team is what it is, its the best team the FO can afford Going into this Phillies series, the Marlins pen was 2nd in ERA in the NL to the Mets (According to a stat by Phillies broadcasters last night...sorry...no link)... Given the size of the payroll and being 2nd, that is pretty damn good...It's early, the bullpen needs a few tweaks (Logan is DFa'ed for starters), and hopefully the team won't waste solid outings by the starting rotation often for much longer
April 26, 200917 yr As Admin reminded us, this bullpen recently had a franchise record scoreless streak, roughly 24 innings if I remember correctly. Now they have blown 2 big games against the Phillies. The problem is that they all got hot at the same time, and now several of them have got cold at the same time. It is upto the manager to select the hot arms for the pressure situations, and even though he blew the save, putting Nunez was absolutely the correct decision as he had been pitching well until last night. Where Fredi f*cked up was only using Nunez, Pinto and Calero for 1 out each, meaning he had to use the eternally cold arm of Logan Kensing in the 10th and of course he lost the game. Give it a while and this bullpen will go on a hot streak but it will be followed by another cold streak. It's just the way it goes.
April 26, 200917 yr Man one losing streak and we went from a team of destiny to the worse team ever assembled. And a terrible manager. The doom and gloomers are in their element. Let it run it's course.
April 27, 200917 yr Author I truly believe this bullpen is the worst the Fish have ever had. Meyer, Calero, and Penn got lucky in the beginning of the season- look at their careers. Kensing chokes worse than any pitcher I've ever seen not named Heilman. Pinto can not throw strikes and Lindstrom throws straight as an arrow fastballs. The good news is we are still in 1st place- but how much longer with Bonifacio batting leadoff and our pen? We need to change these two things. I'm I missing something? These three have been pretty solid. Calero- bad outing. Who couldn't see Penn getting shelled from a mile away? We need a relief pitcher we can actually count on. We don't have one.

Kiko Calero has a 3.48 career ERA and a career WHIP of 1.197. He's only had one season with an ERA above 3.5. One bad outing is really gonna trump that for you?
April 27, 200917 yr I'm with Nny on this one. Meyer and Penn are what we would expect for that part of the pen with great upside still. Kensing's gone we should be relieved (no pun intended). Now lets deal with Pinto. He scares me.

Now lets deal with Pinto. He scares me. Penn's performance yesterday isn't entirely on him either. Hermida misplayed a few balls. Plus, while it does hurt that he turned a "close" game into a laffer, if he had to have a bump in the road, yesterday was as good a day to do it then any other.

Calero and Penn are 2 guys who are not going to help you beat good teams like the Phils and Mets in crunch time. I'm not saying Calero is horrible. I am saying he isn't somebody we can rely on in crucial situations.

Welcome to the club, its hard for us to recruit new fans to replace the old fustrated ones. But ya this is what happen when the FO don't want to spend just $1M on relief pitchers.

You've just said "We can't rely on him."

April 27, 200917 yr For as bad as the pen was in 99, I still remember those games in 06 where we blew saves in 4 or 5 straight games. 3 against Tampa and then 2 in Atlanta if I recall correctly.
April 28, 200917 yr Just for fun: Over in Tampa, Joe Nelson's sporting a 3.52 ERA through 7 2/3 innings, with 10 Ks (6 walks, though) In KC, Doug Waechter's hurt and has only pitched 4 innings (4.50 ERA) And really just for fun: In Milwaukee, Jorge Julio has a (gulp) 10.80 ERA over 5 innings pitched. Joe Borowski's still retired.
April 28, 200917 yr Unless you have names like Braden Looper or Armando Almanza or Vic Darensburg or Jesus Sanchez. You definitely do not have the worst Marlins bullpen of all time. Its always nice to have new fan...

And Justin Miller in SF: 1-0, 5.2 innings, 3.18 ERA, 4 Ks, 2 walks BTW, what ever happened to Lee Gardner? He was awesome in 07
