Miami Herald: Loria wants changes?

Featured Replies

if the season is swirling down the toilet, don't look for him to keep Uggla's and Cantu's salaries when he can play Couglan, Gabby, or Morrison in their spots... or guys who might be replaced by next season, like Cody or Hermida, while earning modest salaries aren't earning their keep if the team flounders..

? With owner Jeffrey Loria losing patience, the Marlins are talking to other teams and open to making substantive changes. Don't underestimate Loria's personnel involvement -- he called for a move before the team promoted Chris Coghlan, who (before May) hadn't played left field since he was 12. Dan Uggla could be moved, but his trade value ''is OK, not great,'' said a rival general manager, citing his decline since last year's All-Star break (.218).

? For all the offseason emphasis on defense and contact hitting, the Marlins have the National League's most strikeouts, third-lowest average (.241) and are on pace for more errors than 2008. But GM Michael Hill said the biggest concern is ``our starting pitching is something that should be better, no question.''

? Fredi Gonzalez said moving Hanley Ramirez to the outfield was discussed, but not seriously. But there's little incentive now, because Ramirez has been very good defensively (two errors through Friday) after 26, 24 and 22 the past three years. ''He's attacking the ball quicker'' on grounders, infield coach Andy Fox said.

Hopefully these are productive changes and not just efforts to reduce payroll....

it can be justified as both

I think Uggla has more than "OK" trade value but Cantu, Cody and Jeremy have less than "OK" trade value.

Yeah I get the feeling they will be payroll moves not productive ones. Does loris want to win or just save money?

I'm so freakin' frustrated w/ this team, I say trade them all. Can't believe that a team can actually play so horribly. It's like a sinking ship full of holes. You can't just blame one of the holes.

Really, 450 pitches in two games? Speechless. Start by trading Cantu, replace him w/ Coghlan. Send Cantu somewhere and bring up Gabby. Get rid of Hermida. Lets start from the beginning and start building for 2012. :(

They obviously are not going to win with the current core of players. There's no justification for keeping this team together.

If you want to make this team better trading Cantu is not a good idea.

Uggla right now will bring you back nothing! even if you package him, and someone else you might get something in the range of a prospect in return but nothing that will help now.

I know Uggla making 5million this year is all but gone anyway, and I think thats why he's played so bad because he knows that, and he's down on himself because he's seen this happen year in, and year out with his friends who were here when he came up who now are wearing other uniforms.

Hanley will be traded to in the not to distant future...

I think we should package "Hermida, Miller, and Bonifacio" and try to get a good solid starting pitcher maybe Peavy would consider pitching for us!

Then move Coghlan to 3b this leaves Ross in LF, I would bring De Aza to play CF he looked good when he was up, and in RF I would let either Gaby Sanchez, Logan Morrison or Michael Stanton play there, and see who takes the job.

Either way we need a good starting pitcher to help Josh Johnson not blow his arm out again, and so it's not just him, and young Chris Volstad who are pitching well.

And we need another power hitter! Someone in the middle the line up with Cantu & Ramirez, and Uggla who strikes fear into pitchers, and can protect these guys.

Oh, and I would hit Ramirez lead off again! This experiment with him hitting 3rd needs to end.

We had Cabrera who should have never been traded away but with him gone we need someone of his caliber in the 3 whole, and thats hard to find.

Either way Ramirez is a lead off hitter with power nothing more! He isn't Cabrera! He is not a middle of the order hitter.

What about 2010 and 2011, we are not going to play those two years.

I agree with alot of that, although it would take a sh*tload more than that deal to get Peavy, considering it took the White Sox top 2 pitching prospects to grab him.

Uggla's trade value is minimal, we are stuck with him tbh, hope he turns it around, as we have already started seeing.

Coghlan at 3B seems like the most logical answer, trading Cantu solves nothing. And in RF you put Cody, LF you put Hermida where he plays best. If you trade Hermida, you gotta call up a Raynor or Cousins to play the outfield.

And Hanley may be traded if the right offer comes around, until then he is ours, he's a great talent, but if trading Hanley nets us some great pitching help (aka a package including John Lester, Justin Masterson, add in Jed Lowrie and an extra prospect), I'm all for tha trade.

The way I feel right now, I don't care. All I know is that the team's payroll is not going to increase to the point of making us competitive till 2012 (according to the FO), so I feel like I'm putting too much hope in "Beinfest we Trust". This team is horrible and I feel spent. Watching this team implode day after day is taking a toll on me. I'll be honest, I feel like there is no hope anywhere. It's just bad bad baseball.

Having Coghlan over Uggla right now is a mute point. Both are playing like crap. I'd rather pay the guy who is making provide the same output. Hermida is stinking it up. Why not give a kid someone else a chance (mind you , I've been a huge Hermida supporter in the past). As for Cantu, love the guy. But why have him play on this team when we can probably get some value for him? Hell, the way I feel right now, I'd trade Hanley for the right package. I'm SOOOOO FRUSTRATED!!!

Whenever it's Barry Jackson on the Marlins it's best to understand he has no problem putting together two disconnected events or conversations and making it appear they are one. Until for example, there is some corroboration linking Loria to Coghlan's callup (which is what BJ is hinting at), it's probably safe to assume while both things happened, they were not connected.

Ditto Uggla. Tim Dierkes mentions today that the Giants are looking for a bat and lists Uggla as a candidate even though he admits the piece he's sourcing states the Giants are unwilling to part with any impact prospects in a transaction. I think Dierkes has really improved his site in the last year but the name dropping without regard for the facts at hand is unfair to the players whose names he so cavalierly throws around. The same goes locally.

I say give it until the end of June. If we're out of the race, then unload some of the guys and look ahead.

We have a 31 year old poster wanting to trade away all our players, and another one who wants to trade Hanley Ramirez. All this after 44 games.

I'll be psyched if we trade Uggla for Cain and a propect or cash.

Cantu whoever should be much more valuable.

If we do not trade them however we should definatley mix up the lineup

Hanley SS

Baker C

Cantu 1B

Uggla 2B

Hermida LF

Cody CF

Coghlan 3B

Bonerface RF

Coghlan is struggling in the OF and Bonerface has difficultys at 3rd so put Cogs back at his original position

I don't see why some of you are so upset at the notion of getting rid of some guys on this team. We already know what most of these players are going to be as major leaguers, and the sum of the parts is just not very good.

I'll be psyched if we trade Uggla for Cain and a propect or cash.

lol. I love how it's Cain, AND, a prospect. We would never ever ever get Cain for him.

We'd be lucky as all hell to get Tim Aldersen. And the Marlins would jump on that in 1 second if they could get him for Uggla.

How about no on Bonerface to RF! He belongs on the bench or in AAA... He is not a major leaguer! I like the rest of the line up except I would call up Raynor or one of our OF prospects who actually play the OF.

Like De Aza, and play him in CF, and Ross in RF.

Oh, and....

That is F'in hilarious!!!! HAAHAHHAHA!
