Posted June 17, 200915 yr Red Sox defeat the Marlins 8-2. Volstad: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO 2B: Coghlan (6), Cantu (14), Bonifacio (7) SB: Bonifacio (12)
June 17, 200915 yr Hopper saved the pen. They've had three day's rest. No excuse for them to suck in this series.
June 17, 200915 yr Nice to see Coghlan and Bonifacio do well. Volstad was shakey again. Whatever. Win tomorrow.
June 17, 200915 yr great job by burke but now volstads era matches his record and its time for people to stop thinking that hes pitching well cuz he hasnt been for a while. i feel like that off day might have hurt our momentum. either way just an ugly game and we cant get a nice win streak going. start a new one tomorrow.

He's had two bad starts.
June 17, 200915 yr Volstad struggled again. Hanley tried to do much @ fenway. I hate tonight lineup. Wakefield pitched well against lefty during his whole career.

He's had two bad starts. if you call 6 innings and 4 runs a good start then yes. but look at how is era has steadily climbed in his last 10 starts. he has been decent but not good.
June 17, 200915 yr Actually canada marlin, it was 6 IP 2 ER's allowed against the Giants. Before these 2 bad starts, Volstad has had 8 quality starts in his 14 starts. Not bad for a 2nd year starter.
June 17, 200915 yr we know we donot match well in fenway their got better team we still not playing were we can beat goood team like them donot be supprise we get sweep i hope not bluejay we got them when their were down
June 17, 200915 yr What's going on the Volstad? I haven't been able to watch the games he has pitched in recently. Is it more mental then physical? Does his arm look tired? Etc.
June 17, 200915 yr Meh. I wasn't expecting to win anyway. I just hope the Jays can take care of the Phils tonight.
June 17, 200915 yr Getting concerned about Volstad. It seems like he is going into a slump or something, and now is a really bad time for that. I don't expect us to win this series, so I don't care that much that we lost. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
June 17, 200915 yr Volstad is 22 years old. The fact that he hasn't had a slump until now is amazing.
June 17, 200915 yr And there goes the Gamethread streak You don't exactly have a good record starting game threads lol. Would have been nice to see voly bounce back tonight but he didn't. Hopefully he gets it back together. Pretty amazing up untill these past few starts he's been money. Not really surprised to see our hitter struggle vs wake. Lester could also give us trouble not just because he's good but he's a lefty.
June 17, 200915 yr This game showed that there is genuine reason to be concerned about Volstad. A lot of young pitchers hit a sophomore slump because the league really starts figuring them out, especially guys like Volstad who pitch well but don't have dominant stuff. Jason Vargas is a prime example, although he never looked comfortable after his rookie campaign it became apparent very early on that the league had figured him out. I believe in Chris Volstad, he is a gamer who is incredibly poised and mature for his age, but if indeed the league has figured him out it may be a rough go of it for a while before Volstad can make the adjustments to his game in order to continue to pitch sucessfully at this level.

Volstad has been steadily given up homeruns lately. Even in games where he wins, he has given up the long ball. If the league has figured him out or there has been a change in his mentality/delivery, I hope him and Wiley are working on it. I'd hate for him to be a one-year wonder.

Despite my concern with Volstad I really don't think he is a one year wonder. My concern right now is for him this season and how long it will take him to right the ship. I am confident he will right it though.

I am confident he will right it though. The question for me is where he will "settle" down to, pitching wise. If he makes his adjustments and rights the ship, he will be back to last year's level. If he doesn't, then he slides down and settles at a new level. We all know how easily habits are formed. So if there is work being done, then good. If not, then it is easier for any "slide" to continue than for it to improve on its own.
June 17, 200915 yr Terrible game but was happy to see Chris and Boni have a good night. I love your new sig
June 17, 200915 yr The fact that we faced, arguably, the best team in baseball might've also had something to do with Volstad's struggles. The Red Sox are pretty damn good. I'm expecting another loss tomorrow with Miller on the mound, to be honest. And I know he's pitched well lately, but still. I don't think Miller is quite ready for a lineup like this.
June 17, 200915 yr Brad Penny hasn't done so well this year, so we could see a slugfest tomorrow. Unless, of course, Andrew Miller continues to picth well.
