I see the sweep of the Phillies as either the turning point in our season, or we're going to see that we're not meant for contention. What do you see us doing from now to the end of the season? Either we make the push and are in first or 3 games or less back most of September, or we fall out of contention. Honestly, I think we can do it if a few people step up for us, and this happens: Coughlan continues his hot streak and maintains a .285 ave, Hermida improves second half, Cantu improves second half, Hanley does what he has been doing all year, Nick Johnson does what he's been doing all year, and our 4 and 5 starters dont get shelled every time out.

I see it going either way. This team is so inconsistent, so I don't know what's going to happen from here on out.

We are good enough but I think that series In September vs Philadelphia is the make or break series. We have to take at least 2 out of 3 or bust.

As of now I see San Fransisco taking the wildcard and The Marlins overcoming the odds and the Phillies choke in September.

I can see it go either way. The Marlins are being ridiculously crazy, you never know what you're gonna get on the field. At the same time we've won 5 of our last 6 series, only throwing the Nats series and 3/4th of the Phillies lineup has been slumping lately.

So I have no idea. Both scenarios make sense.

I am totally confident that we will continue to grind out at bats, and back our pitchers up in bad outings. We will be making a waiver wire deal or two before the playoffs, and I can honestly see us making the playoffs and actually excelling at a higher level. Have you guys not noticed that ever since Nick Johnson arrived a couple of our guys are following his approach at the plate? I see our bats much more patient at the plate, one guy to note is Emilio Bonifacio, he is selecting pitches better than before. But Chris Coughlan is the one who is showing major improvement. I like our chances to be honest with you, I can't lie. I feel the magic.

The Marlins need a 4th or 5th starter. And the only pretty good player I could see going through waivers that the Marlins could possibly get is Doug Davis, but I'm not totally confident if we have a prospect the D-Backs would be interested in. We'd probably have to throw some cash into the deal as well.

As for the original topic, truely depends. We play from here on out the teams ahead of us in the wild card and our division foes. So we truely control our own destiny, period. I'm not sure if this team is currently poised to have a run at a playoff spot come mid-late September, but we have learned in the past that all you need to do is get hot at the right moment and basically any team can get into the playoffs (well except the Natinals, they are f*cked).

We really don't have enough consistency in the starting rotation. A 3-4-5 of Volstad, Vanden Hurk, and West is very questionable.

Another starter (and, imo, it doesn't have to be a Doug Davis), and we're good. Just an upgrade.

I'm perfectly fine with the 1-2-3 of JJ, Nolasco, and Volstad. However, I have a problem with the #4/5. My problem is, it seems like even when they pitch well, they're only going to give you 5 innings, max. You can have that from your #5, maybe, but not 2 spots in the rotation. Not only does it suck for the rotation, but I fear that it will tire our pen, as the season progresses.

If you're asking if this current team can do it...I'd say no. If they get a backend of the rotation starter, I might change my mind. And the reason being that we contended with Emilio Bonifacio (if not the worst starter, one of the worst in baseball) for a good portion of the year. And we just got a significant upgrade in Nick Johnson. So this team, right now, should be better than the one that was contending for most of the year. Just a #4 starter would be nice.

Are you forgetting about Anibal? He's actually looked pretty good his last few outings. He would provide a major boost for us. He would solidify that 4th starter. I think we should continue to throw The Incredible Hurk out there until someone better comes off the waiver.

HOW DOES AARON HARANG SOUND?

I see it as 50/50 as to whether we make the postseason. Our bats have certainly been better recently, although we still have frustrating days in which we cannot get the clutch hit with RISP. To repeat what others have said, our #4 and #5 starters don't inspire too much confidence and tend to tax the bullpen every time they go out.

Expensive.

the golden number to reach is 90games.

right now the marlins 59-53

so in the remaining 50 games they have to go 31-19 or 12 above .500

possible, but i think the marlins need to go on a long winning streak, like 8 straight or 9 out of ten, to have a realistic shot.

good news, that long streak is already developing at 4 games

No, not really.

Yeah, we need another starter if we're going to have a good chance at the playoffs. You never know since this team is always full of surprises, but another reliable guy at the back of the rotation would do this team wonders I think. I don't know who that could be, but something needs to happen I think.

I'm fine with RVH in the 5th slot.

Just look at the schedule - cake anyone?

Tough teams (& current games over .500) are COL 8, STL 8, and PHI 13 (two series).

Bottom feeders are NYM (8) thrice, SD (19), WAS (32) twice, and CIN (15).

The rest are middling teams - HOU 2 & ATL 4.

Not that records are perfect predictors, but I like our schedule - on a per game basis, the teams we face the rest of the year are currently a whopping 214 games under .500 - of course, WAS @ (32)x6games makes up 192 of those.

In theory it would suggest we have a good chance to finish the season very strongly.

But as we saw last week in DC, teams with bad records can still play some good baseball, and due to the extreme streaky nature of baseball, it all depends on when you play a team.

I know the Mets have been pretty poor this year, but those games are still ones that will be awfully competitive, and they will want to ruin our playoff hopes like we did to them the past 2 seasons.

2266, thanks for the breakdown. I would say it's more due to the variance involved rather than streakiness, but yeah, agree with everything else. The Mets will be dying to screw us to salvage a little bit from this season.

yeah 4-5 in the rotation worries me, unless the offense keeps raking.

But I think we'll make a push, yes.

Hi everyone!

New at the forum and glad to see the level of knowledge around here. Great place!

I really think we can get there, true we are in serious need of another consistent opener, but the boys are giving the max on the field, and it has paid off.

I believe we could see the magic this year, I'm looking forward to it. Well, that's if Volstad and Hermida don't give me a heart attack.

Given the low price tag, I would have taken a run at Pedro. I think a veteran like that would have added something to the clubhouse and been helpful to the younger pitchers. The long rest Pedro has had might be just what he needed to pitch well down the stretch. I think he starts for Philly this weekend.

I would send Volstad to Double A for a few starts, ala Nolasco earlier in the season. Right now, he is not helping the team at all. I would also probably "rush" Sanchez back to the rotation. He pitches for Jacksonville tonight and will throw five or six great innings that I'd like Marlins to have tonight.
