June 3, 201016 yr God I'm so pissed. A perfect game with 28 outs. An ump just cannot have this much destructive power. One thing is to blow a call at home plate but a perfect game? WTF!!!
June 3, 201016 yr I don't think Jim Joyce is going to be allowed within 100 feet of Detroit for the rest of his life... That's not necessarily a bad thing, I mean it is Detroit...but still, I don't think there is a single fan of baseball right now not sick to their stomachs over what they just saw. We have first hand experience to something like this. Anibal Sanchez's NO HITTER, the last out being by Eric Byrnes. I have seen the replays and he was out, but that play was a bang bang play, and in the situation the referee HAS to give the guy going for history the benefit of the doubt on the call. The funny thing about this play was it really wasn't bang bang, he was out by a good foot. Just an absolute shame and complete embarrassment for baseball today. Only that he may or may not have a job anymore.
June 3, 201016 yr This is so out there and so embarrassing, it almost feels like Joyce wanted to be a total d*** and call it safe to piss somebody off! That play was such a joke... this absolutely cannot stand! In my eyes, hell in EVERYONES eyes... Galarraga just pitched a perfect game and it was literally robbed from him! This is the only thing I can think of, I mean as an umpire you have to be pretty sure the guys was safe to make that call in that situation and if you are not sure you would call the guy out to reward the pitcher.
June 3, 201016 yr WTFFFF... I was listening in the 9th inning, I can't believe what was being said. Any1 has video of that call? He was out about half a foot. on a ground ball to Miguel Cabrera who gave it to Galarraga who was covering first and was clearly beat the runner He was out by more than half a foot.
June 3, 201016 yr WOW! Nuts! I truly feel bad for Jim Joyce.... Props for the the way Galaraga handled it, he got robbed big time!
June 3, 201016 yr Jim Joyce needs to be disciplined for his actions. On such a close play for a historic feat such as a perfect game you call the runner out! The funny part to me is the the runner even knew he was out! He was jumping up and down in shock that he was called safe and probably felt bad as he is part of a big screwup in MLB History.
June 3, 201016 yr Miggy's reaction says it all. Also, this will get overlooked but it shouldn't. Austin Jackson would have been the DeWayne Wise of that game. Willie Mays-esque catch for the first out of that inning. Fantastic play.
June 3, 201016 yr I just saw the 9th inning replayed on MLB Network....what a blown call. That ump needs a fine. Or sent down to Single A ball.
June 3, 201016 yr Instant replay in MLB, please. Umpiring seems to be getting worse every year. I dont think MLB needs replay, I just think that umpires HAVE to do a good job to keep there jobs. Although, in this case it was NEEDED! This debate will never end.. :lol
June 3, 201016 yr OOMMMGGGG I just saw the play.... All i can say is, I hope JJ gets fired. Inexcusable, unacceptable.
June 3, 201016 yr Instant replay in MLB, please. Umpiring seems to be getting worse every year. do we really want it where it could theoretically be used on every play though? They're already trying to get away from the games being so long.
June 3, 201016 yr I'd love to hear Ozzie Guillen's comment on this one. Could you Imagine if this had happened to the White sox? Gullien would have probably thrown a punch.
June 3, 201016 yr This ump is making a strong case for instant replay or computerized umps (which I'm not really for).
June 3, 201016 yr The elephant in the room here is Miggy Cabrera taking his sweet ass time. Besides that, it was a terrible call in a situation in which THAT CALL NEEDS TO BE MADE. Also, Halladay got a whole lot of help from the home plate umpire. I'm just sayin'.
June 3, 201016 yr Thing is, what can be done at this point? If Selig and MLB reviewed it and just said okay we're switching the call, I mean that would be absolutely stunning. I don't think Cabrera was taking his time, he can't throw it 'til the pitcher is close to 1st.
June 3, 201016 yr I'm cooling off a little bit, but I don't necessarily think that replay should be available for every play. I don't think managers should get flags like coaches do in football. I started a thread on this during the 2009 postseason where there was a TON of bad calls. I think MLB should hold umpires accountable for bad calls. For example, Joyce should be suspended for something like this. Umpires get it too easy with their tenured positions and need more incentive to make better calls.

I don't think Cabrera was taking his time, he can't throw it 'til the pitcher is close to 1st. MLB shouldn't overturn it. It was a judgment call. It will set a terrible precedent. I think Joyce should have a vacation while things settle down. He might even want to voluntarily.
June 3, 201016 yr Yea now Im thinking of the close calls that Halladay got when Coghlan was at the plate. If Halladay gets bad calls going his way in the late stages of the game... how does Galarraga not get an obvious out call there? This MUST be reversed! I think its so blatant that nobody can say "oh now theyre gonna just reverse calls left and right?" Thats not the case here... this is just horrendous and a disgrace.
June 3, 201016 yr Joyce should get suspended, no doubt in my mind. I think they should give Galarraga the perfect game because, well, he actually did pitch a perfect game. Bad calls on strikes suck, but they aren't automatically outs. This bad call is permanent. I am still really pissed. Unbelievable.

This would be the one exception to the rule.

Blown calls have affected playoff series and MLB has done nothing (rightfully so). There really isn't the capacity for MLB to step in here.

The real shame is that I think most umps in that situation are giving any remotely close play to the pitcher in that situation.
