Just like I said about cornfield when Sanabia got called up...

Benched just jizzed his pants.

My thoughts, I like the hire. I've stated in the past why. He has vast experience, he has a history of winning, and he runs a relatively tight shift. Obviously a manager doesn't have a MAJOR impact on the game, but this is a step in the right direction for the team.

I'm not sure where they got the info from; I can't find it anywhere. It sounded legit the way they said it, though. It was a serious baseball conversation, which is pretty rare here in South Florida (at least on the radio).

Wow, didn't think they'd get it done that quick.

Generally I agree, but this is one of the rare cases where I think getting the right group of coaches can help quite a bit. This team has played a lot of sloppy baseball (Though a major aspect of that sloppy play in Maybin has been sent down) this year and given Freddi's player oriented managing style and passive attitude I can certainly see it being a compounding factor to the problem. Some one like Valentine can maybe get a fire lit under these guys and hopefully cut back on the senseless errors, terrible AB's, and questionable moves, ect. and nab us a few extra wins. Of course we still need a bullpen not made up of career minor leaguers, a decent left handed bat off the bench, and a back up catcher not named Hayes since it looks like Baker is out for quite a while.

I kinda wish they would find someone else.

Valentine is as qualified as a manager can come when you are looking for a replacement. Has been to a world series and has a proven track record of winning. He is known as a players coach, but also very intense. I believe someone said you would go to war for Bobby Valentine when he is your manager.

Although this would be great news, I don't see it happening so fast. Under MLB rules we are supposed to interview a couple of candidates, before hiring somebody in order to comply with the equal opportunist rule.

That's why Andre Dawson is on the payroll

since when is bobby v a good manager?

Since this organization decided to make Fredi Gonzalez the sacrificial lamb to atone for their own failings.

Funny enough, Samson, Beinfest, & Hill all admitted that they were as responsible for the poor performance this year, yet none of them lost their jobs today.

It's going to be really embarrassing when Valentine shows up and figures out that we forgot to get anyone for the bullpen and had to throw one together on short notice.

Maybe he'll go old school and only use it for emergencies.

BTW: Is he gonna send the pitching coach out to the mound to make pitching changes? I remember he did that with the Mets. What's that about?

Such weird timing. Hanley's raking again, coming off a win, not like anything in the bullpen has changed. Bobby V was a disaster on the Mets, why him?

Valentine was not a disaster for the Mets, he was almost the complete opposite. He took them to 2 NLCSs and a World Series, winning over 95 games twice and practically turned the francise around. Not saying that it was all him, they had a good front office, but to say he was a disaster is completely false.

Don't mean to go against the crowd, but I'd rather have Showalter. I'm more impressed with his commentary as an analyst than I am with Valentine's, leading me to think Buck has a better grasp on the game. He also has a pretty decent track record managing in the major leagues. It may not mean much, as the difference is marginal, but Showalter actually has the better winning percentage (.514/.510).

Valentine had some pretty stacked teams with the Mets in 1999 and 2000. What has he really done to warrant the reputation he's getting here?

I dont know, but from the sounds of it, I can see the majority of the members of this forum having the same general "fire Fredi" conversations about the manager that we have had for the past two years, But such is life in sports i guess. After being away from Baseball for a number of years, i dont have much to say about any of the candidates however i hope it changes the tone of the team, for the better.

Only one word can truly describe this move if it actually happens.

Legit.

Nope. The one word would be "illegal". For obvious dumb-ass reasons they have to at least interview minority candidates or all hell will be released.

Gonna take at least a week, maybe two.
