Well, just my opinion but I'm not sure what to think about Edwin as a long-term manager. He did pretty good for the short time he did manage for us this year but he didn't manage a full season and near the end there, there were too many unfortunate occurrences (injuries and such). I just feel that Edwin deserves another chance but I wouldn't be so certain to give him a long-term deal. What the Marlins do, I don't know..but that's just my opinion. So if he comes back, I'd prefer it for just another season just to see. Of course, they might go with Bo Porter...and imagine how great that would be to hear that he signed a long-term deal.

 

I agree with you about setting the stage for 2012 next year and it's important for us to get our manager locked in. Maybe, however, it's just my distrust in the Marlins FO. I somehow believe that 2012 and beyond will be looked upon as more important than next year because we still won't have the stadium built. I mean, I do understand what you mean about building momentum in 2011. The question is, do the Marlins FO feel the same way or are they looking passed 2011 to 2012. I really hope it's the former. I do, however, think if the Marlins fix the holes we had this year, that next year we could make it to the playoffs and that will definitely build momentum for 2012, regardless of who is the manager (that is, as long as we have a competent manager).

Why as soon as someone do not want to play for the team or manage them, we start calling them names, if next week the FO hire him and he win, everyone will be jumping on the bandwagon, their is a saying, Never burn bridges behind you, someday you may have to turn back. just remember, the FO is not running this team in a way to make every manager out there want to know down doors to come here.

On a side note, I did find it hilarious that Woody Paige on Around the Horn (ESPN) said that Freddi is a good choice for the Braves, and that you can't judge Freddi on his Marlins tenure, because they "are the Marlins". That is how we are really percieved around the country, as "just those Marlins" and as nothing special whatsoever, even with our lineup potential.

According to a baseball source, Bobby Valentine interviewed for, and was offered, the job as Marlins manager but turned it down, thereby removing himself from contention for the position. The club has not commented on the reported offer.

 

Valentine, 60, had been considered the frontrunner for the job, which was opened when the club fired Fredi Gonzalez in June.

 

Edwin Rodriguez filled the managerial role in the interim, going 46-46. Gonzalez was announced as Bobby Cox's successor with the Braves earlier Wednesday.

 

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reported on Tuesday that other candidates for the Marlins job include Rodriguez, Bo Porter and Jim Fregosi.

 

Valentine told ESPN that he has been in touch with Marlins management about the position since it opened. He compiled a 1117-1072 record in 15 seasons with the Rangers and Mets, and he led the Mets to the World Series in 2000. After leaving New York, Valentine spent several seasons as a manager in Japan before joining ESPN as an analyst.

 

 

 

 

We wanted him as manager, Loria made up his mind to go against his baseball guys too late, and an insulted Valentine declined. At least that's what I'm getting from this story.

 

EDIT: Bobby V's earlier comments of "If this is a major league process to becoming manager, I would never want to do it again" makes it seem like the Marlins insulted him with the way they didn't inform him about anything.

I would not have been opposed to Bobby V. The other candidates out there who are being attached to the Marlins job don't exactly blow me away, so I'd be in favor of sticking with Edwin.
