Either way, at this point I'd like to see Edwin get the chance to manage the team for a full season with a rebuilt bullpen.

October 13, 201015 yr This is a little weird to me... didnt Valentine withdraw his name back in June? He was still in talks after all that seemingly went wrong back then? And when was he actually offered the position. Back in June or again this October in the past few weeks? And if we couldnt reach any agreement in June, why in the world did talks restart again now? I thought the Valentine boat sailed months ago... whys it back? And if I'm Edwin, I'd feel a little slighted knowing that if I came back, it'd only be because nobody else wanted the job. As an interim manager, I understand that I'm around because other people aren't available. But if you're now offering me the job on a permanent basis, I'd like to feel like a top priority, not a backup plan.

I could see Cox coming down here to purposely get himself ejected in the first inning of every game just to #1 piss off Loria, #2 raise the bar on his all-time leading number of ejections, and #3 just to see how long he can run this team into the ground before Loria fires him.

You can act like a jerk if you are Steinbrenner and own the Yankees. Its completely different if you are the budget minded Marlins. No bullpen, no rotation after 2 guys and a FO that wants a puppet, and finally an owner that wants "his man". I think Edwin will be back because no one else wants the job. Thanks Loria :banghead.

When I say Loria screwed his one chance, I mean that he didn't take authority at that moment and get the guy he wanted to hire. If he really thought Valentine was the guy to turn this franchise to a true playoff team, he could've made the final decision and hired him, given him the money and authority he wanted. Instead, Loria did his due diligence. While I agree with him considering his options, his one failure was that he never alerted Bobby V of anything during the process. He left him in the dark. Even when they decided to keep Edwin for the year, Bobby V was never told that he wouldn't be considered until after the season. It was the process in which Loria went about things with Bobby V is where he blew it. I have a very good feeling that if Loria treated Bobby V. the correct way, giving him the respect he deserved and alerting him of his stance in regards to his managerial candidacy, Bobby V would most likely already be the manager of the Florida Marlins. Instead, we lost a manager with the experience this team dearly needs.

Edwin Rodriguez filled the managerial role in the interim, going 46-46. Gonzalez was announced as Bobby Cox's successor with the Braves earlier Wednesday. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reported on Tuesday that other candidates for the Marlins job include Rodriguez, Bo Porter and Jim Fregosi. Valentine told ESPN that he has been in touch with Marlins management about the position since it opened. He compiled a 1117-1072 record in 15 seasons with the Rangers and Mets, and he led the Mets to the World Series in 2000. After leaving New York, Valentine spent several seasons as a manager in Japan before joining ESPN as an analyst. We wanted him as manager, Loria made up his mind to go against his baseball guys too late, and an insulted Valentine declined. At least that's what I'm getting from this story. EDIT: Bobby V's earlier comments of "If this is a major league process to becoming manager, I would never want to do it again" makes it seem like the Marlins insulted him with the way they didn't inform him about anything.
