Some Movement For Marlins, Uggla

Featured Replies

If he turned that down, the Marlins just avoided a bullet. While we might not be able to replace is power and production immediately, we can afford to not be spending 12 million a year on Uggla. hes great and hes improved but hes gonna be 31 next year and that money is better spent on pitching or shoring up something else. Im fine with Stanton, Gaby and Logan making up for Uggla's lost production.

Trade him for pitching and/or prospects. The Marlins run a low budget operation and cant afford to be paying Uggla that much along with Hanley and JJ. We have other needs and even though we might miss Uggla in the short term, its better not to have that contract on the books. For one time, I wont fault the Marlins for being cheap. They actually chose a bad opportunity to not be cheap, but Uggla saved it by rejecting it.

Well, his agent fills his head with all of the comparable deals demonstrating that he's worth a zillion dollars, and then you have Ross urging him to play out his last arb year and sign with the Giants, and then, lo and behold, you wind up with someone who has grossly overestimated his value. He's no Hanley or Stanton or LoMo or even Cogs.

He never fit into the long-term objective of good defense to support good pitching, but he's managed to perform well enough offensively to merit an offer. Now, he's beyond pressing his luck. It's not like this team lacks for hitting and power. It does lack good defense. He's one of the reasons and he's never going to get any better than he has been, which isn't very, the return of Perry Hill notwithstanding.

That we even offered 4/48 demonstrates the ultimate in seriousness, and was probably made as a final take-it-or-leave-it offer whether they told him and his agent that or not. If not, I'm sure they can probably figure it out.

I'd prefer that he rejects it and is traded. There are other holes that 10-12 million for next year can go a long way toward filling.

Exactly how I feel.

i really cannot believe that he rejected that deal but i always felt that cody being traded would really hurt our chances of bringing him back.

id say offer him 4yr/50m and a 5th year option to bring the potential value up to 60-62 million.

if he doesnt accept that then he just clearly doesnt want to play here anymore and it would be very sad for it to end that way.

If Uggla leaves.. if you could spend 4/48 on ONE person, who would it be?

Try to give Mike Stanton a Longoria-type deal. That's where most of the money would go, if it were me deciding.

I would either do that, or spread it around and fill out major needs of the team.

Who do the Red Sox have that would benefit us?

Buckholtz, Lester, Vic Mart, Dustin Pedroia.

Why would we trade Uggla to Boston, they have Pedroia and I doubt they move him to Short Stop again.

There was something about moving Uggla to 3rd and how he might want to do it to be in a perennial winner.

Kinda sh*tty if he's leaving just to be in a perennial winner, seeing as it's what we're trying to build here.

im not sure if you guys watched the video on mlb.com about this but frisaro says that it seems that uggla may want to play somewhere else. thats sort of the indication im getting as well and i hope it is not true.

he gets to stay in miami, keep his family here, play for a competitive team, move into a new ballpark, and 50 million dollars....what more could he want.

i wonder if maybe josh and hanley get involved to try to lobby him to accept the offer.

I'm sure they're already involved. It's not something you just ignore if you're signed here long term and want to compete.

I'm just wondering when it'll be time to change the phrase to "And his name is... Mike Stanton!!". The Marlins have gone beyond what we'd expect (I would assume) to get Uggla..4 years $48mill..it was definitely nice to see the Marlins offer that and I would definitely be sad to see Uggla go, but who knows, maybe he is upset with the Marlins because of the Cody situation. Whatever..I just hope if Uggla doesn't return as a Marlin, we get something worthwhile for him...

i really do think this has a lot to do with cody. i really cant see uggla playing for someone else.

I hope we dont give him that deal or well be paying for it down the line. Hes not worth that much to us. Let him get that money somewhere else. Im kind of pissed we even offered it to him.

If it really is just because of Cody, then that's incredibly immature on Uggla's part. We offered you a great deal, probably more than you will get anywhere else.

First of all, the opinions of a bandwagon fanbase are completely irrelevant. The real fans will support the team regardless, and the bandwagon fans will come out as long as the team wins. In order to win, you make moves that believe help the ballclub, regardless of the player you are trading. Very few players in the big leagues reach irreplaceable status, and Dan Uggla is not one of them. I'm sure the fanbase was disheartened when the likes of Josh Beckett, Juan Pierre, etc. were traded, yet those worked out very well for the organization. The front office has to do what's best to put a winning product on the field, with the limited resources it has.

That's the attitude of a team that likes playing in front of empty seats. The Marlins have been making moves that "help the ball club" for years ... and bleeding fans all the while. Because of its history, this team needs to pay its fan favorites until they can no longer play in order to prove to fans that the goal isn't to field a AAA ball club and pocket the savings. Guys like you may have a deeper understanding of the benefits of trading Uggla for prospects, but to 90% of fans and 100% of the general population ... it just looks like another round of the Marlins shipping off its best players to avoid paying them. The fact that the Marlins are getting a new stadium is just going to make it look even worse.

If it really is just because of Cody, then that's incredibly immature on Uggla's part. We offered you a great deal, probably more than you will get anywhere else.

I agree. But Uggla could've said point blank, "I have no interest in playing for this team anymore." I think that would be even more of a slap in the face. By demanding more than what the Marlins would give him, Uggla could then say "Well we just couldn't work out a deal" and end it that way. But that's me thinking cynically. I'm going to wait and see how it plays out first. But if Uggla ends up getting a lesser deal (say three years or less money) with another team later on, and he settles for that without a problem..then what would we all think?

I wonder if MLB steps in and has a say in whether or not the Marlins trade Uggla.

Why should they? It's not like we didn't offer him a fair deal.

Yea, but in terms of our competitiveness, losing Uggla really puts a dent into things.

Well, did we not say the same thing about Cabrera in 2008? Yet we were in it til the August inconsistency.

They gonna find another 'Cantu' to make things less painful?
