Posted December 6, 201014 yr I don't much like hearing Sanchez' name come up in trade speculation for Upton or anyone else. He reminds me so much of Edgar Martinez, who was a late-blooming super star at clean up for the Mariners. Martinez didn't start producing until his late twenties and Sanchez is way ahead of schedule. I'm looking for a solid season for Sanchez ... somewhere in the range of 25 HR, .300 average, and 100+ rbi. The Hanley, Sanchez, Stanton foundation in the middle of the batting order is the Marlins strength. A lineup of Coghlan, Morrison, Hanley, Sanchez, Stanton at the top of the order is what the Marlins should be all about in 2011. If you are going to move any of those guys, it should be Morrison in favor of better defense in left field. However, I wouldn't give up on the idea of Morrison growing into that left field spot. Sanchez is going to be a big name in Marlins' history .... count on it.

We arent talking about 50 homers and 150 RBIs here, those numbers are attainable.

Not when theoretically he may not even be on the team next season if he is used in a trade. I like Gaby, and he exceeded my expectations last season but I just don't think he has the X factor to make himself a Marlins legend.

Well to be fair, he became a Marlins legend when he took out Nyjer Morgan

December 6, 201013 yr When Gaby was in the minors I truly didn't have much hope for him, last spring I really hoped that Logan would win the job. That said I think based on last year that Gaby is capable of putting up .300 BA w/25 HR and 100 RBI, he showed remarkable consistency last season and as he is a little older than most rookies should be able to avoid the pitfalls of the second season. Will he be around for a few more seasons is the only question?

December 6, 201013 yr The Edgar Martinez comparison is unfair to Gaby, but I think 25HR and 100+RBIs is doable, as is a .825+ OPS. I am not sure he is gonna be a .300 hitter any time soon but it is certainly possible.
December 6, 201013 yr Edgar Martinez? Really? That's a bit overboard considering he should be in the Hall of Fame. My wishful thinking was more along the lines of mike sweeney
December 6, 201013 yr 25 HR and 100 RBI should be doable. The .300 BA may be at some sort of peak year, but I don't see it happening more than maybe once. .285 sounds about right to me.
December 7, 201013 yr I expect Gaby to hang around until his 1st or 2nd year of arbitration. We might actually keep him as a $1-$2MM insurance policy post-2012 if other options emerge for 1B/LF (allowing Morrison to move to 1B, of course). He's a nice player, and an .800-ish OPS out of a $400k guy is always nice, especially for the Marlins.

I am not sure he is gonna be a .300 hitter any time soon but it is certainly possible. Going to be pretty tough when you OPS .750 against right handers. He's going to have to hit .300 to get to that level of offense. And I know it's just, basically, a 1 year sample size, but the league really figured him out in the second half - .241/.313/.437 (.750). He's going to need to make significant adjustments real quick next year (btw, I think he will and will be dependable, just like 2010, I just see absolutely no legitimate growth here). I think .775 is realistic, .800 is do able, and.825 is a lot of bloops dropping and generous winds on a good weekend in Wrigley. I don't see him turning into John Olerud/Will Clark/Sean Casey type. He's more of a Loney. Solid and dependable. Edgar Martinez comparisons, are way way unfair.
December 7, 201013 yr Edgar Martinez was, like, an AMAZING hitter. As in, a better hitter than Hanley (by career OPS+: Edgar = 147; Hanley = 135, best season 148). Even Gaby's super ceiling is not as good as Edgar was. It's a silly comparison.

I think as his swing and eye mature I could see another 4-5 HR and some of his strike outs to work over to walks. The difference, cumulative totals-wise, between a .790 and a .825 is not all that much.

How much more maturation is going to happen with him? It's not like he is 23. He's always had the eye. Maybe he learns to fight off a few pitches, but there is just not a lot of room for growth.
December 8, 201013 yr Author Take a look at what Edgar was doing at Sanchez' age. Nada mucho. He didn't start hitting until he was 29. I'm just reporting that I'm picking up on some similarities and I think Gaby is going to have a whale of a career. It's a little short-sighted to discount Sanchez potential for matching Edgar when he's already off to a much better start. Their approach at the plate is similar.
