Then why in the world did we pay him $ 7 million. Give him a contract for $ 3 million and tell him to be happy about it, and then go get someone for 3rd and more bullpen help. If he doesn't sign so what, we get someone else but have our 3rd baseman.

And please don't go all Bartolo Colon on us because that was totally unpredictable; plus, if the Marlins would've started signing guys for league minimum who wouldn't have panned out, the complaint just would've been that the front office is cheap.

He sucked of course, ERA over 6 and we dumped him in June. No way we can afford to wait that long with Vazquez. He needs to go now. He simply can't locate much of anything, falls behind counts on mostly everyone, and is, to put it lightly, very hittable. It's just tough watching him pitch.

I was thinking of Garland, too; however, I believe I've seen that he has a preference toward the West Coast so I'm not sure if we even had a shot to get him, as you said.

Fact is it wasn't a terrible move in more of a pitchers' league which he had dominated the last time he pitched in it. There was no reason to believe he couldn't come back and do the same thing, especially after it looked like he had most of his velo back in ST. And at the point we signed him there was no one else.

I was just glancing at an old thread, and Olney reported that Garland turned down more money with San Diego to sign with LA, so he obviously knew what he wanted and took it. That's not a guarantee that he wouldn't have signed here, but it's pretty convincing evidence.

 

And, even still, so there was 1 guy who you might marginally criticize the FO for ignoring to sign Vazquez, and he may not have wanted to come here anyway.

I expected innings , not dominance from Javy, with an ERA around 4. But watching him tonight, he won't make it through the season the way he is pitching right now, there were so many 2 strike pitches that he hung over the plate

Hurricane, look at the last draft. the Marlins spent above draft slot money for a bunch of guys.

 

Most notably to me, they spent $700,000 on Jacob Realmuto to keep him away from playing football at Oklahoma State and to make him the catcher of the future. He's going to be a good player. There were a bunch of guys this year in the draft that the Marlins spent a ton of cash on.

Not really. The Marlins are generally in the bottom 5 to 7 in baseball when it comes to giving out bonus money and how year after year 70% of their drafts are made up of low to no upside 22 and 23 year old college players.

 

In the rare instances where they do go overslot, it just means that less money is available for later in the draft.

I wouldn't expect him to say anything different in an interview. I don't think he is trying to be bad on purpose but perhaps he doesn't have the drive anymore at this stage in his career to do what it takes to overcome this.

Rodriguez said the Marlins will continue to go with Vazquez, who will next start on Sunday at Washington.
