July 12, 201115 yr it would absolutely STUPID to trade either Nolasco or Anibal for anything other than an upgrade at that position because starting pitching that both young and solid is incredibly difficult to come by and the veterans who perform at that same level are much more expensive. I think a lot of the ESPN "gurus" forget that a new park is opening next season and Loria is not going to want a subpar team on the field and pitching and defense is where they are claiming to be resting their laurels so I highly doubt any of the starters (aside from Volstad possibly) get moved unless it's an offer that is so lopsided it's impossible to say no. Nunez however might be moved as I mentioned earlier because he can strike people out and has a respectable ERA still and pitching like that is always in demand come playoff push time. Dobbs is all but gone as well I do believe.

Every comment by Samson to the press is to the effect that 2012 ticket sales are ahead of expectations, the horrendous June record notwithstanding. The average MLB payroll is about 80 million. They have consistently said they expect to be an average payroll team in the new park. I don't think there is any doubt that Loria will be spending about 80 million, maybe more. He's already demonstrated his willingness to spend in '05 with Delgado, only to have to retrench when revenue didn't materialize to justify it. Now, he'll finally have the revenue to support an average payroll, and they want to make a splash and contend in '12. Here's a roster made up mainly of this year's guys (no Javy, no Leo, no Omar, no Auntie Wes) some costs are known, others are rough guesses, and you could substitute other guys for similar money: JJ 13.75 Nolasco 9 Sanchez 6? Volstad 1? Hand .4 Choate 1.5 Cishek .4 Hensley 1? Mujica 1? Badenhop 1? Sanches .5? Dunn .5? Webb .5? Hanley 15 Buck 6 Stanton .4 LoMo .4 Dominguez .4 Gaby .4 Coghlan .5? Bonifacio .7? Baker or Hayes .4 Dobbs or other lefty bench guy .8? 4th outfielder .5? 4th bench guy .8? That totals about 63 million, about 6 million more than this year. Which would leave 17 million, give or take a million, available to upgrade starting pitching or whatever else that they decide they need. Maybe they keep/sign Omar and/or Javy and/or Leo. Or none of them and go for outrageous trade offers and/or a big FA. Who knows? I think that they're going to be making trade-deadline deals and/or be in the FA market with the object of constructing the best team ~80 million can buy for '12. And I hope they sign Jack for '12 instead of wasting millions on someone else when they already have the best manager in the business. The guy's proven ability to get results is worth 10 or 15 million or 20 in payroll by getting more out of the payroll you actually have, and spending money on a "name" manager means less money to spend on players.

Who else is smart enough to tell Boni to stop swinging wildly at every 2-strike pitch, stop worrying about striking out, relax and just do everything possible to get on base, and once there not to worry about getting caught stealing, just run your ass off, with incredible results? Who else calls LoMo "Twitter," benches him and turns his hitting around in a matter of weeks? Who else inspires Gaby to try to bunt for a hit (although he needs some work on that) when he's the best hitter on the team? Who else pulls pitchers mid-batter and chews out pitchers on the mound for not throwing strikes and attacking hitters? Who else uses 4 or 5 relievers in one inning and yanks people without mercy because the reason he's here is to win games and he's going to do whatever it takes to do it, no matter whose feelings are hurt? Who else inspires Nolasco, a somewhat erratic pitcher with no complete games, to pitch 2 complete games in his last 3 starts? Who else convinces the FO to pick up Mike Cameron to plug the hole in CF and the hole in "veteran leadership" because he's known him for many years, even though he was a failure in Boston? Who else, in a little over 2 weeks takes a team that had been playing .050 ball for 20 games to playing .750 ball in the last 12 games? I was disappointed when Jack left after '05. They haven't had a manager worth a crap since, until now. Now that they have him back, and you can tell from his post-game interviews that he's excited and his juices are flowing as well as they ever have, they need to keep him around for at least next season. I think he'll do it if they offer it. He's into this. Whether he'd agree to stick around long enough (2019) to beat Connie Mack as the oldest manager ever is another question entirely. Meanwhile, Jack is worth his weight in gold. He's up to the same stuff that got the job done in '03. Probably won't happen this year, but he's their best option for next year. I suspect that Loria has probably figured this out. Or, at least I hope he has. And, no, Jack didn't pay me to make this post. :lol As he says, he doesn't need the job. But, we need him.

Wilson will likely get more than that actually but that would be someone I could see the fish targeting...remember, Vazquez and his 7 mil contract come OFF the books I believe as it was a one year deal right? so adding Wilson (to replace Vazquez) wouldn't shock me...however with the amounts of money quality starters can get these days it wouldn't shock me if it ended up being a 15mil per kinda deal to another team

July 12, 201115 yr I would give C.J. Wilson 4 years, $50 million in a heartbeat. He's not only a very good pitcher but also a lefty. 1. Josh Johnson 2. C.J. Wilson 3. Anibal Sanchez 4. Ricky Nolasco 5. Sanabia/Volstad/Hand And we would have at least 2 guys not in the rotation who can throw legitimate ML innings. And if there actually is another $5 million, I'd probably upgrade the bench, maybe a bullpen spot, and maybe someone to push Coghlan.
