Marlins "Dead Serious"

Featured Replies

Another great article from the Herald about Loria & Co. possibly turning the tide in SoFla by becoming the "Evil Empire" of the NL, based on how marketable our area is... REALLY good read.

I hope the Fish Can Get 30,000 per game, I really really really hope they do. When I come to Florida in May ill be coming with a couple of friends and family members to the stadium and will be spending like a Pig to support the fish, even if it means a bag of peanuts for 10 bucks. Start saving now, lol

The last few times I heard "Mystery Team" associated with any free agent it was the Phillies... I highly doubt it, but I will be super pissed off if that happens

What other teams are even supposed to be interested in Pujols? Other than the Cardinals and Marlins I haven't any other teams mentioned.

And there's hardly a word about Prince Fielder.

I think he is waiting for Pujols to set the money table & sign first.

well no one's going to take Howard's atrocious contract off their hands, so, no way.

This time, we'll be deadly serious this time.

heh, I mean I'm a huge Marlins fan and even crossing my fingers that we make a big splash here, I still have to giggle a little at this stuff.

YOU GUYS! WE ARE TOTALLY SERIOUS THIS TIME!! I MEAN IT! WE ARE SO NOT KIDDING AROUND HERE PEOPLE! DO NOT IGNORE US!!

DUDE LISTEN TO ME I AM NOT SCREWING AROUND! HELLO??

Yeah it does seem to be a bit of "they protestith too much"

Moreso that other tems are waiting for Pujols to set the market before they make offers to Fielder.

I hear the Marlins are planning to offer a 20 year, 400 million dollar contract to Billy the Marlin.

Samson: I told you we're serious.

Pujols for 9 years? I thought it was for 5?

Someone gave us falso information. The deal was for 9 years and under 200 million

I thought I heard 9 years $225M. Cardinals offered them under $200M. Anybody else hear this??

According to the latest reports, our offer was under 200 million. John Heyman last tweeted that our offer was well under St.Louis's offer.

The problem I have with this type of news is that what exactly is "well under". Because of the state tax situation in Florida an offer that has a numeric value slightly lower than an offer made for him to play in Missouri may actually be pretty much an equal offer. We saw this with the offers the mets made to Delgado before the 2005 season compared to offers we made.

If the Marlins offered something similar or equal to the Cardinals offer last season, it is just a preliminary offer to get a feel for the market and is not "low-balling" or being "not serious" or any of the other stupidty that has been said about the Marlins lately.

What's the minimum they could have offered to seem serious? 9 years/$180 MM?

If it's truly "well below" $200MM, then it was probably below $180MM.

People make it seem that if we offered say 9/190 that we're done and out of the running. It's the first offer made to him this offseason that we know of, that doesn't mean we wouldn't go up.

And everyone saying that there's no way this happens, in my opinion there is definitely many ways this could happen. I'm more concerned as to whether or not it would be a good move to sign him if it means something like 9/225.

You quoted me, yet completely ignored my post.

Actually the 9/190 was a typo I meant it to say 9/180. I was directly addressing your post. My apologies

I'd bet the Marlins' amount was substantially less than what the taxless state of Florida could compensate for.

I spoke to a coworker yesterday who is a Cardinals fan, and even though I'm not big on conspiracy theory type of thought when it comes to baseball, he commented on what if there is some collusion among the teams to to bring down the Pujols number to 200 or below and that the marlins offer was made with no intent to sign Pujols but to work to meet this goal.

Not saying I believe this way of thinking but it was worth a mention.

Why would an additional offer lower the asking price?

Yeah, I don't get that either.

Pujols can't just name his price; he has to adapt to the market. If the Cardinals' offer proves to be the best in the end, he'll like sign there. I don't see how the Marlins lowballing Pujols really helps the Cardinals.

Meh, initial offers.

Heyman On Marlins, Pujols, Wilson, Kershaw

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 18 at 3:15pm CST]

The Red Sox have yet to hire a manager, so Jon Heyman of SI.com looks at the dynamics between GM Ben Cherington and Boston’s ownership group and how they are affecting the hiring process. Here are Heyman’s hot stove notes...

  • We heard earlier in the week that the Marlins offered Jose Reyes a $90MM deal, but Heyman’s sources say Miami offered $10-20MM less than that.
  • The Marlins made Albert Pujols a “lowballâ€ offer that would only work if the three-time MVP was intent on playing for Miami, according to Heyman. All things being equal Pujols appears to prefer St. Louis.

I'm going to assume the Marlins aren't stupid enough to build hopes so high only to knowingly let them fall. These offers have to be nothing more than introductory.

You know If the Fish dont get at least one FA and they have anything close to the season they had last year they risk the possibility of fans turning their backs on the Miami Marlins and landing Loria In a load of Debt and having to sell the club, this is a real possibility if the Marlins start messing around with the Fans..

Step down from the ledge. Something will happen. It's only Nov. 18. Just gotta wait it out and fight the urge to think the worst. Fight it!

Its still early. You never accept the first offer unless you know you are getting overpaid. This applies to everything.

You should have taught your mom that before last night.

Yeah, this. Even if the most pessimistic reports are true, still this.

If they don't end up with any of Pujols, Reyes, Fielder, Wilson, or Buehrle, that would be horrific PR, especially so after this buildup.
