April 12, 201313 yr ccording to the New York Daily News‘s Andy Martino, the Mets have had internal discussions about trading for Marlins rightfielder Giancarlo Stanton, and the general consensus in the front office is that the team would be willing to part with it’s two top prospects, pitcher Zack Wheeler and catcher Travis d’Arnaud, in order to bring the 23-year-old slugger to Queens. The first part of that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Any team that hasn’t had internal discussions about trading for Stanton is being negligent, and few teams are as desperate for an outfield upgrade as the Mets, whose own general manager, Sandy Alderson, has said publicly on more than one occasion that the club is lacking in those spots. http://mlb.si.com/2013/04/11/giancarlo-stanton-new-york-mets-miami-marlins/?xid=nl_siextra
April 12, 201313 yr Trade now! Sounds like madness, but with the horrible sandwich covering Stanton, he won't get anything decent to hit all year, plus it looks like he doesn't care anyway. Also, we all know he will be traded in the off season, so if we have a chance to trade him earlier while he has more value left, why not? I'm not saying the Mets offer is the right one, but I'm sure we can get something good from another team.
April 12, 201313 yr Not enough. If Beinfest weren't dumb he would have gotten d'Arnaud in the Toronto deal. Getting him as one of the major pieces in a Stanton trade is just salt in the wounds.
April 12, 201313 yr Doesn't have to be the Mets. Send him to whomever offers us the best deal. PS: The way things are going, we may have a team of nothing but prospects and team controlled players next year: $16 million payroll anyone? :huh
April 12, 201313 yr Texas offer would be the best if it's Olt, Profar and other prospects. At least, the best from the teams who've shown interest.
April 12, 201313 yr Even though I like what Texas could offer, I would love to see Stanton as a Mariner. Mets deal would suck ass. Like Penguino, I would have like The catcher in the Toronto deal.
April 12, 201313 yr As a Marlins fan first and Mets fan second- I'd be fucking pissed to see Giancarlo in Queens. Seriously. We all know he wants to be in Dodger Blue, but I figured that would be in actual LA when he hits FA, not when traded to NY
April 12, 201313 yr We all tend to overvalue our own prospects, right? I can tell you sentiment among Mets fans is that is far too much to give up for a OFer the Marlins have no leverage to keep, is under control for only 3 more years, and stands to break arbitration records after this season. I'll say that I think Stanton is a special player and the players the Mets have out there are special prospects - but I'm not sure that trade fits the team's building plan. I don't see a Mets trade happening for Stanton, but he's going somewhere eventually.
April 12, 201313 yr Thread title should read "All 29 other teams would be wise to deal top prospects to get Stanton" Nothing to see here folks.

I don't see a Mets trade happening for Stanton, but he's going somewhere eventually. I can maybe understand saying that it would be a fair deal, but saying that package is too much is pure homerism. The Marlins are not without leverage here. Unlike Cabrera, Stanton is still in his club controlled years and the Mets could do what the Marlins should be doing--sign Stanton to an affordable extension. The Marlins don't need to trade him now, either, necessarily. It's not like he's on the verge of walking or something and they can afford his arbitration figures (remember that they have virtually no money on the books for that timespan).
April 12, 201313 yr The Marlins plan was not to offer Stanton a contract. Obviously. What they actually said is that they wanted to wait for Stanton to come into a new season and start to like the new look of the team. He would of course then start to see the front office's vision for the team and be more likely to sign a contract. How's that working out for ya?

They probably want to see how this new core performs before they do anything. It's a bad idea but that's what they're doing, I think.

Brantly, Jose and Adieny are the only ones with a future on this team. All the rest of the new core guys are still in the minors and everyone on the team currently is a buncha stop gaps.

They were also probably thinking Eovaldi and Turner. Maybe Solano, Morrison, and Ruggiano to a lesser extent.

April 12, 201313 yr I would say trade him now, and balance the team by filling two or three holes. I rather have a balanced team, than seeing the team suck with one super star player that will be gone in 2-3 years.

Including whatever players they get back in a trade for Stanton.
