August 26, 201312 yr I don't see why the Harvey situation shouldn't be an instance of caution for the Marlins in how to handle Fernandez. Piling on the innings at a young age is always going to be risky. Fernandez has a lot of innings under his belt for such a young age.
August 27, 201312 yr Shut him down. That will never happen. Jeffrey Loria gonna Jeffrey Loria. Sell tickets for a few more games vs an entire season+ Why even risk it? So dumb. Loria is determined to get him the ROY so that he can try to pretend that this season didn't totally suck ass.
August 27, 201312 yr Fernandez has one more start before rosters expand. They should just let him pitch that game then replace him in the rotation.
August 27, 201312 yr Harvey was being treated for forearm tightness for a while and they continued to pitch him. When the forearm tightness seemed to get even worse, they checked it out and found the partially torn ucl. Harveys case seems more like a case of terrible management and player safety than "he pitched more innings than he should have"

Piling on the innings at a young age is always going to be risky. Fernandez has a lot of innings under his belt for such a young age. I realize this remark isn't totally in his case, but..... The way pitchers are handled in the minors, I have to agree with this statement. The minors should be used to increase a pitchers endurance instead of babying them. Basically taking young bodies that are still developing and helping them to develop their bodies into their chosen trade. There's good reasoning to both sides of this argument, but.... Guys like Fernandez are a little different. They are still developing, except they are doing it at this level where they are far more in the publics' eye. Limit the amount of pitches for each start, let them get to a predetermined amount of innings, and then shut them down.
August 27, 201312 yr I am deeply concerned that Loria/Samson will have Fernandez skip the next 2 starts (both on the road) and have Fernandez next pitch at home to maximize the financial returns from Fernandez's remaining starts. Idk what kind of effect that sitting Fernandez for a week and a half could have on his arm.
August 27, 201312 yr I seriously doubt they'll sit him for a week and a half. He'll pitch when he's scheduled to pitch, and his final start will be at home, I'm sure.

Hey, let the Loria hate flow over you, there's nothing like a ridiculous postulation -- any excuse will do to lob a stupid-bomb at Loria. On another thread, I forget which, someone (not you) asserted that merely throwing a baseball was unnatural. Which is not true. Man, for thousands of years past has thrown rocks at the heads of mastadons and buffalo and a lot of smaller stuff hoping for a knock-out and a good meal. Those attempts, while mostly failures, were all fastballs, not curves or sliders or sinkers or even cut fastballs. It seems that ligament problems stem mainly from trying to impart unnatural spin -- that is, anything other than a pure fastball -- snapping off curve balls, etc. The only thing that bothers me about Fernandez is that he throws a fair number of curves. It seems to me that if you want to protect a young pitcher's arm, it would be a good idea to count total pitches thrown, not innings, and weight it for the types of pitches thrown.
August 27, 201312 yr Throwing a baseball IS an unnatural motion (that was me). Just because primitive civilizations figured out that the optimal motion to throw a rock with full strength was throwing it overhand does NOT make it a natural motion. Throwing a baseball is a very unnatural motion and science has proven throwing to be detrimental to shoulder health, and in some cases elbow health. http://megliofitness.com/theimportance-of-pitching-mechanics/
August 27, 201312 yr OK, natural or not, my point was that they ought to account for the worst of the "unnatural" motion, not just innings.

August 27, 201312 yr Fernandez will probably pitch at least 3 more starts from here on out and if he stays hot he might get 3 more but on a 5 innings limit. My guess is he will pitch about 185 IP.

August 27, 201312 yr Not a ridiculous postulation. Follow the logic 1) Loria cares about money over all else. 2) Jose F's innings limit is fast approaching 3) Jose's next 2 starts are road games 4) Loria gets a better marginal return by having Jose pitch at home. 5) Loria has a long history of interfering with personnel moves (see, eg, Buck, John and Bell, Heath) Ergo a good chance Fernandez gets skipped on this road trip. Or maybe the Marlins have him blow through the 170 inning limit. That could happen, too.
August 27, 201312 yr Like I said, let the hate wash over you. If he cared about money above all else, he wouldn't own a baseball team. Any baseball team, and especially not this one.
August 27, 201312 yr David, he's just your stepfather. I mean I'd understand being protective of your real dad, but he is just a stepfather. You need to get some perspective here.
August 27, 201312 yr The hate just overpowers you, eh? There's no other explanation for stupid personal attacks. I may be many things, but one of them ain't Samson. Ask Admin. Not to mention that I despise attorneys, and Samson has a law degree. I'll give him credit for not practicing law and for getting the stadium built on-time and under-budget. But, you were fixating, yet again, on Loria, not Samson. My point remains that there are probably better ways to protect young arms than simple innings limits.
August 28, 201312 yr He isn't Samson. Fernandez won't be skipped for the entire trip. He may have his second start pushed back a couple days but not both starts.
August 28, 201312 yr If he's not Loria/Samson, then he's definitely someone on their payroll. Mike Hill? Dan Jennings [front office edition]? Billy? The Clevelander girl that "Marlins" had a really awkward, creepy obsession for?
August 28, 201312 yr If he's not Loria/Samson, then he's definitely someone on their payroll. It would be great to be on their payroll. Then, I could suggest that they examine what mix of pitches the last 20 or 30 or 50 phenoms who developed arm problems threw in the process of getting themselves disabled for a year or more, instead of just spouting the usual innings-limit stuff. Too bad I'm just a fan on a board.
August 28, 201312 yr I will take the high road here and not make any other jokes, but ..., you really do need to stop the blind love for Loria. I suppose, in the abstract, blind love>blind hate, but neither is particularly healthy.
