August 3, 201312 yr So glad that the last outing has seemed to spark national media attention. He deserves it, and honestly, the Marlins of late deserve it.
August 3, 201312 yr I feel like he is impossible not to like. He loves to have fun, he is absolutely fantastic, and he has seemed to embrace the fan base despite its lack of attendance. I mean, clearly the last part is just a matter of saying the right things, but a lot of players ignore it or talk badly about it. Well, the lack of attendance is much less noticeable with half the seats of Sun Life Stadium... I could understand the players' frustration when all you can see is orange seats. what frustration do our players have or should have?. No one else talks about it. For fun, I looked at the last time the cy young winner, David Price pitched at home, July 12, also a Friday and it was 13,347. I don't care to hear about it. The A's are in first place and we do not hear about the frustration-seems to not be an issue for them, for Tampa either etc.-
August 3, 201312 yr The A's had 35,067 there last night, winning definitely does help. not always, rays are last in attendance now, i believe. florida teams just suck for attendance, even if theyre winning. too many people have ties to the northeast or atlanta. rays games only come close to selling out during yankees or red sox games, without those, i think theyd be alot lower in attendance tbh.

Sorry, I don't want this to turn in to an attendance thread. I was just responding within context of Jose Fernandez. Look, it is frustrating that this is just a way for the media to comment, but seem to be exclusive to our situation.

Look, it is frustrating that this is just a way for the media to comment, but seem to be exclusive to our situation. I agree with you. My point was more that winning helps to raise the profile of a team/player, I don't think it is the magical cure for bad attendance. During Jose's start against the Pirates, I commented that it was a good crowd (24,207) and someone said it was mostly Pirates fans. I wanted to believe that wasn't the case, but after this crowd... that poster would seem to be correct. That's a little disappointing, but I have to hope that as the team wins more and Jose's profile is raised... people will go to the games. At least there's a decent ballpark to go to now. To be fair... looking at other Friday attendances this season, I could only see two above 18k and last night was 17.7k. Who knows.
August 6, 201312 yr Does Fernandez have a chance to be ROY? at this pace I actually believe he does...

August 6, 201312 yr Does Fernandez have a chance to be ROY? at this pace I actually believe he does... Depends on how high they are on Puig. By the way, has anyone seen Puig's BABIP? It's fucking over .450. You've got to be kidding me.

It's f***ing over .450. You've got to be kidding me.Just like people paid attention when he was on fire, they also paid attention when he Ked like 15 times in 25 abs and went on a skid. Like you noted, a great deal of his success has been stupid amounts of luck. He will come down to earth, and as long as Jose finishes strong, he should take it.
August 6, 201312 yr Puig would have to get injured or cool down a ton for Fernandez to get ROY, I think.
August 6, 201312 yr So would shelby miller. Fernandez is the better pitcher, imo, but the media will look at wins and ignore the fact that Fernandez plays on the worst offensive team in the league.

I doubt it if the current pace is maintained. Miller's W-L record isn't substantially better to the point that it would overshadow the rather large difference in ERA and WHIP.

Media generally doesn't overlook ROY candidates on certain teams, evidenced by Hanley and Coghs winning the award on average to bad teams. It also doesn't hurt that, as you said, Fernandez is the better pitcher. And it's not a matter of if Puig cools down, just when.

Erm ... the 2006 team became historic going from 20 games under to at least one day of being a game over (Hanley) and the 2009 team (Coghlan) was actually good - second place in NL East, came close to the playoffs. If we can turn it around a bit more, keep what we're doing going, then yeah, Fernie can win the ROTY award.
August 6, 201312 yr It's going to be awesome when Puig wins it and totally blows next year once that BABIP regresses to something at least somewhat reasonable

Yeah, man, Dontrelle's BABIP went down a bit from 03 to 04 and his average really suffered.
