The Official Jose Fernandez Man (Boy?) Crush Thread

Featured Replies

It's sad that this team is so bad (with the exception of Fernandez) that speculation about who I am degenerates all the way down to Billy.

:lol

I am deeply concerned that Loria/Samson will have Fernandez skip the next 2 starts (both on the road) and have Fernandez next pitch at home to maximize the financial returns from Fernandez's remaining starts.

Hey, let the Loria hate flow over you, there's nothing like a ridiculous postulation -- any excuse will do to lob a stupid-bomb at Loria.

On another thread, I forget which, someone (not you) asserted that merely throwing a baseball was unnatural. Which is not true. Man, for thousands of years past has thrown rocks at the heads of mastadons and buffalo and a lot of smaller stuff hoping for a knock-out and a good meal. Those attempts, while mostly failures, were all fastballs, not curves or sliders or sinkers or even cut fastballs.

It seems that ligament problems stem mainly from trying to impart unnatural spin -- that is, anything other than a pure fastball -- snapping off curve balls, etc.

The only thing that bothers me about Fernandez is that he throws a fair number of curves. It seems to me that if you want to protect a young pitcher's arm, it would be a good idea to count total pitches thrown, not innings, and weight it for the types of pitches thrown.

Which follows what I stated. Limit the amount of pitches per start, and then the amount of innings thrown in the season. They can call it whatever they want.

Speaking of Samson.......Didn't notice it until the wife pointed out a Yahoo Sports article, but has anyone noticed the absence of anything Samson-related for quite some time?? That author (forget who, but I do seem to remember he hates just about anything Loria/Samson) speculated that the ex-stepson may be on his way out.

Just food for thought.

I like to hate on ... as much as the next guy ;), but he brings up good points and I too would be curious to see the breaking pitch vs fastball #s on guys who end up having these nasty arm injuries. Guys like Strasburg and Harvey would be easy to figure out since all their pitches are out there.

Have you seen the stats on how often early man was referred to Dr. Andrews ??

Scott Boras, apparently, is into, quote, "12 year deals for younger players." The player in question is Bryce Harper, a position player, but what would you say about an 8-9 year deal for Jose?

10 years. No more. No less. Just pray that he accepts.

I am OK with locking up the really excellent players. Yes, you can get burned, but the bad long deals all seem to be for older players.

I really don't expect this front office to make any offer to Fernandez this early.

We already waited too long on Stanton.

If they pay players the money, I don't have a problem nor see problem with waiting.

It's nice to get a discount, but sometimes you just don't k ow what you have and what can happen. Why lock yourself into a 8 year deal with a player when you don't know if hell play on the first year of the extension.

Rick Dipietro is my prime example. Olympian and face of the franchise and young.

Then what happened?

Yea, and hopefully Stanton is finally locked up. If Jose has a phenomenal year next season, you lock him up for a loooong time. Same goes for Yelich. I have always loved and admired the way the Rays are not afraid to lock up young guys long term REALLY quickly. It probably pays off for them almost every single time.

Jose on Aug. 30th :

6ip 3h 2r 2er 2bb 8k. and 1-for-2 with a career-first triple.

Only 4.1-inning remaining to go to qualifier.

His drop in velocity worries me...

Kid's wearing down. He's never pitched this many innings. He's still super effective.

Yes I did just reference Pokemon.

The only real noticeable wear I saw came from that 14 pitch McCann AB and the next 2 batters after. His slider/curve still had great movement.

It's more than likely they're going to skip his next start in Chicago and he'll rest up. But hopefully his next start at home is his last.

Probably will be his final start. I was a bit concerned that he threw so many breaking pitches to McCann, though. If anything is gonna kill his arm ... He threw at least 9 breaking balls in that at bat.

He pitched very well, though, considering the fact that he got into jams.
