November 3, 201312 yr Someone should photoshop Salty's picture onto that DVD cover. Despite the fact that this is mocking my comment... I laughed pretty hard. I still think we should get Salty. Hopefully the post-season knocked his price range down. But from all that I have ready, he's going to get a deal exactly in range of what I suggested... So I might not be crazy.
November 3, 201312 yr Someone should photoshop Salty's picture onto that DVD cover. Lol. Please enjoy my post like, sir.
November 8, 201312 yr Wilson just named Donovan Solano the Marlins Defensive MVP this season. Really?
November 8, 201312 yr Wilson just named Donovan Solano the Marlins Defensive MVP this season. Really? Preston?
November 8, 201312 yr That wouldn't surprise me at all. I bet Tommy Hutton would name Solano the all around MVP after Fernandez.
November 8, 201312 yr Wilson just named Donovan Solano the Marlins Defensive MVP this season. Really? was everyone else just that bad?

November 8, 201312 yr The article is at the Marlins web site, if anyone is interested. He's always been under rated here.
November 8, 201312 yr The article is at the Marlins web site, if anyone is interested. He's always been under rated here. And look at that - it's even based on stats. But I suppose the Solano critics will find something wrong with the stats they chose.
November 8, 201312 yr Author From the article The formula for picking each winner encompasses five criteria -- 25 percent defensive WAR (wins above replacement), 25 percent defensive runs saved, 20 percent inside edge fielding rankings, 20 percent inside edge arm accuracy and 10 percent field percentage. To qualify, a player had to participate in a minimum of 80 big league games with his team.
November 8, 201312 yr I don't know who I would give it to honestly. Most players either only played partial seasons or just weren't any good.

November 9, 201312 yr The article is at the Marlins web site, if anyone is interested. He's always been under rated here. And look at that - it's even based on stats. But I suppose the Solano critics will find something wrong with the stats they chose. You two are drawing the completely wrong conclusions from this. It is true that Solano was in fact slightly above average at defense this year. However, he won because everyone else on the team was average to really below average on defense. The other guys who played 80 games, Adeiny, Polanco, lomo, stanton, dobbs, Pierre, and ruggiano all supremely sucked on defense (all negative def WAR). If Marsinick, Ozuna or Mathis had played 80 games they would have won this easily by the same metrics used. Lucas played over 80 and actually has a positive def WAR despite playing a variety of positions. I bet if he played the same position all year he also beats Solano easily. In fact, Lucas's ability to play multiple positions at an above average level, his superior offensive numbers, and his ability to adjust to mlb pitching after mlb pitching has adjusted to him makes him far more useful than Solano (why is he on the team?). The only thing award proves is just how sh*tty the marlins defense is. It is not indicative of Solano being a useful major league baseball player. Solano still sucks and his slightly above average defense (this year) doesn't come close to making up for his horrid offense. So as Solano critic, I conclude that despite this "award", Solano still sucks.

You're right, Solano didn't win because his defense is fantastic. I don't agree that Solano sucks, but you make the point very well that there were certainly better defensive players on the team.
November 10, 201312 yr Actually, I'm not drawing any conclusions from this award. Never have been a fan of defensive stats, or formulas that use defensive stats in them. Just stating what I have always said. Solano is under rated on this board.

November 12, 201312 yr Because who else could lead this team to maximum beefcake? Certainly not Yelich. This is where Solano is useful.
November 12, 201312 yr You saw it in Spring Training that one time. LOL Still ticks you off I didn't wait for you to tell me what I think.
November 12, 201312 yr The problem with defensive stats is that they are still drawn from observation, not purely from result. They are better than single anecdote, but a lot of it is still "should have got it" judgements and a calculation based upon that.
November 12, 201312 yr There's really no other way to judge defensive objectively. For what it's worth, the observations are grounded by some objective principles--namely defensive zones. This type of observation is much better than the average defensive evaluation, like stuff that BroncoBob does. He lets his personal biases against certain players intervene and influence his decisions. Like when he incessantly told everyone here that Gaby Sanchez wasn't a good defensive player when he was really one of the best defensive first basemen in MLB.

Like when he incessantly told everyone here that Gaby Sanchez wasn't a good defensive player when he was really one of the best defensive first basemen in MLB. Personal bias? Not even close. Still don't like Gaby's defense. Explained why so many times that I don't think it is needed any more. Those that opt to ignore those reasons because they have a personal bias against me dosen't mean those reasons aren't valid. Even discussing the pros and cons of defensive stats is just repetitive garble around here. Those that take something from them can think what they want. Dosen't bother me a bit. Don't know why me not taking anything serious from those "stats" bothers them so much.
