December 16, 201312 yr Especially considering that have plenty of young arms that are capable of closing. We have Wittgren in the minors that is not far away, and A J Ramos who I think would do a good job in that role. We will also have Tom Koehler who I personally think has the stuff to close games plus all of the others that don't make it in the rotation. I almost forgot about the newly acquired Carter Capps. I think the FO envisions him as a future closer.
December 16, 201312 yr A good 3B is harder to find than a good closer/reliever. Davidson supposedly profiles as a 1st baseman longterm, so this may not be as big of a miss as we all think
December 16, 201312 yr Well, we really don't have anyone in the minors at 1st base either. He could have easily transitioned to 1st when Moran was ready. Of course if all of our OF's pan out, Yelich might end up at 1st long term, but the odds aren't good that they will all make it.
December 16, 201312 yr If they shock everyone and sign Stanton, you'd imagine they might try and shift him to 1B eventually with less chance of injury. HAHAHAHAHA, okay though seriously.
December 16, 201312 yr A good 3B is harder to find than a good closer/reliever. At least for the Marlins it has been that way
December 16, 201312 yr Also, what do you guys think it would take to acquire someone like Middlebrooks? It depends on how Middlebrooks starts the season, if he's still as inconsistent as he has been the Marlins could get him fairly cheap, I would say a couple of pitchers like Descalfani and SanchezThat's a lot! It may well be the price but that is not cheap at all!

December 17, 201312 yr At this point the odds of pulling off a trade are slim. There just isn't much out there. It's either Olt or Middlebrooks. I don't see either of those happening. Looks like Dietrich will get the first shot.
December 17, 201312 yr I've seen several long term projections of Dietrich at third, of course these were before the drafting of Moran, but could he really be any worse for a year than when they sent Bonifacio out there?

December 17, 201312 yr I am really not high on the idea of dealing a top prospect arm for a young 3b with Moran possibly only a year away. I guess you'd do it hoping he could move to 1b eventually, they'd just better have a plan if they do this. Have some freaking foresight for once. It reminds me of the time when the Marlins traded away a young 3B for a sack of shit and had no other 3B in the system.Matt Dominguez is looking better everyday! I don't fault the Marlins for trying to win that year. Carlos Lee just didn't pan out. Trading for Carlos Lee at the time could only mean that they were trying to lose.

When you think you can win, you either ante up or go home. If the Marlins didn't trade Adrian Gonzalez for Ugueth Urbina in 2003, they would not have won a championship! Is Dominguez better than any 3B on the Marlins' roster right now, sure he is.....but the Marlins had questions about his bat. Carlos Lee sucked that season even before the Marlins traded for him. His offensive numbers were padded by Minute Maid. They were better off with Gaby Sanchez.

Do you really believe they were trying to lose? They were obviously just desperate.

Do you really believe they were trying to lose? They were obviously just desperate. It's more that they are just really stupid and backwards in their baseball philosophy. They thought that Carlos Lee was decent because he was a "run producer." In reality he was a negative WAR player. Most teams who were desperate would not have traded for Carlos Lee because they know better.
December 17, 201312 yr We probably could've traded Cishek for Matt Davidson. I would've been ok with that. I really wish I knew whether they considered this
December 18, 201312 yr Author I read on MLB trade rumors that the Marlins are going to trade some pitching for a 3B.
December 18, 201312 yr They're trying to do that, but I have no idea of any good 3B that are available right now. It's a valuable position where there is not a lot of great talent.
December 21, 201312 yr It reminds me of the time when the Marlins traded away a young 3B for a sack of s*** and had no other 3B in the system. The worst part was trading Hanley ~20 days later. We COMPLETELY depleted any and all depth we had at a premium position in a 3 week time span to get shit in return and here are we are paying for it. It just shows that there is absolutely no "plan", no "foresight", or anything like that by the people running this organization. And how they think they can run a MLB team like that just boggles my mind. You don't trade your top (and only) prospect and your MLB starter at a premium position if you have any kind of plan.

Gaby post trade: 112 OPS+ Gaby with us prior to his 2 months of suck: 111 OPS+ I wonder what kind of player he is. Oh, and our production since trading him at 1B: About ~75 OPS+ with over 600 PA given to Greg Dobbs and Carlos Lee. Yah professionals.
December 22, 201312 yr The worst part was trading Hanley ~20 days later. We COMPLETELY depleted any and all depth we had at a premium position in a 3 week time span to get s*** in return and here are we are paying for it. To be fair, Eovaldi isn't "shit" and he could have netted us Mark Trumbo, which would have filled the same hole left by Hanley.
December 22, 201312 yr Hanley career OPS+: 132 Trumbo: 114 Good to know we maybe could have used the player we got from Hanley for a player with more than a 100 point drop in career OPS. Talk about a sound investment.
December 22, 201312 yr To be fair, Eovaldi isn't "s***" and he could have netted us Mark Trumbo, which would have filled the same hole left by Hanley. I think the *in fairness* point would be that Hanley looked like he might be really sliding at the time. (I didn't want to trade him in the first place because even a below-average Hanley isn't bad.) But it's more to the point of "hey let's just trade Matt Dominguez and Hanley and Reyes and everyone on that side of the diamond and we'll just start from scratch and clearly Hechevarria is the cornerstone to do that with."
December 22, 201312 yr To be fair, Eovaldi isn't "s***" and he could have netted us Mark Trumbo, which would have filled the same hole left by Hanley. Huh? Hanley is a much better player than Trumbo is, even if he's been inconsistent over the last couple of seasons.
