Marlins. Aquire Bryan Morris from Pitt

Wait a minute.

Nobody knows that Loria had anything to do with any of this. He may have said "fix the BP" or he may have said nothing. It's not like Jennings and Hill are unaware of the problem.

And, what's so bad about it? They got an MLB average-type reliever for a draft pick. Which pick may turn out to be anything from nothing to fabulous, but that wouldn't be known for years. They need BP help NOW, not 3 or 4 years from now. They save a mill, which can be spent on the next guy.

As for Gregg, he's over the hill, but he's on a minor league contract. Even if he fails when they bring him up he costs almost nothing.

Aren't you getting a little sick of them signing these guys with terrible track records only to have them fail this year? How many games have our shitty RPs cost us this year? Instead of shelling out money on washed-up has beens like Marmol, Furcal, and H-Rod they could have easily have signed Qualls and Webb, you know guys who actually performed last season.

Also, I highly doubt Gregg will be making minimum when he gets called up. And Gregg WILL fail just like marmol and h-rod . His salary will be in the low 7 figure range for sure. These moves marginally improved the pen only because it couldn't really get any worse. The draft pick was a salary dump and was not worth these two. It's really ridiculous actually.

The Miami Marlins way: Not paying Ryan Webb for his 2.96 ERA and instead giving the money to Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg.

Seriously, these idiotic moves make the decision to non-tender Webb look that much worse.

qualls is also having another really nice year and he was only $2.7m But hey, at least we have Furcal.

Maybe you try to help the bullpen so that the young guys don't have to pitch/play their hearts out to watch some craptastic explosion blow the game.

7:41pm: Gregg will receive a $2.1MM pro-rated salary upon being called up, which means he’ll earn right around the same amount ($1.4MM) that the Marlins will now forego in draft bonus slot money, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com

Yeesh.

Beating a dead horse but that's close to what Ryan Webb would've made had they just kept him. No idea why they let a perfectly serviceable pen arm walk. People on this forum were much too hard on Webb.

I don't want to bash the move so much because they did need some help. I would like to say hey just call up generic AAA reliever but I don't know who that would be. Wittgren and Dayton have been stumbling a bit. Can't count on Caminero yet and Hatcher is Hatcher. And they do still have a lot of early picks. If Morris improves a little it won't be so bad. Funny, Morris himself was a 1st round pick (26th) back in the 2006 draft.

hey, it's not like Webb would have been the second best relief pitcher on this team or anything.

loljk

Every team has plenty of players who don't pan out. It's no real reason to make a trade like this. You could just as easily make a list of young players who have panned out for this team, as well.

I never said that. I started off by calling it bad value. I just don't agree with saying our time isn't now. Our time is more now than it has ever been. That doesn't mean take bad value. It means don't wait for this 'future' bullshit. Because usually it isn't a perfect world.

But let me reiterate, I don't support this move. I was speaking specifically at the idea that we shouldn't be adding.

I'm also getting a little tired of this future that never comes...

I'm all for remaining patient and making smart moves, but I get the feeling that this core is going to shit on itself like the last core.

Well I think the more important thing is seize the opportunity while it is still there because this team is bound to make stupid mistakes or perhaps key players don't pan out.

Huh?

Huh what?

Yeah I think our team is actually off to a good start and has lasted long enough to say it is sustainable. It can't hurt to make additions and now is better than it ever was since like... Cantu era.

This is silly. It's early June. That isn't close to being "long enough to say its sustainable," in large part because Fernandez is out and they basically replaced him with nothing. There were also a bunch of guys who were playing over their heads during the early part of the season and have since come back down to earth.

The season is early enough that it's much more necessary to look at the talent on the field than the record when determining whether or not the Marlins should add.

There aren't many players on this team who are overachieving. In the weak National League, they could be contenders this year especially with an addition or two. That doesn't take away from the fact that these recent moves are still stupid.

I think that's a stretch. Koehler is going to continue to regress to the 4.50 pitcher he his and Randy Wolf is going to return to the same shitty pitcher that sparked the outrage when the Marlins signed him. Only two of Turner's starts this season have been decent. That puts an enormous amount of weight on Eovaldi and Alvarez to have quality starts.

The offense still isn't good and is starting to show its mediocrity with the regression of guys like Saltalamacchia regressing back to the mean after going on a tear in April.

Heaney is going to replace one of those guys soon. That's an upgrade. The guys who were overachieving offensively like Saltalamacchia have already regressed back to their mean so I don't see a huge drop off.

Well, we aren't sure yet when Heaney will be up. I'm high on him long term, but we also don't know how he will perform. You can't automatically assume that he's going to perform out of the gates. But, yes, he'll certainly be an upgrade over Wolf, but the extent is still completely unknown.

Most of the overachieving hitters have regressed to the mean by now, yes, but my point is that the offense is now showing its signs of mediocrity. They just demoted the second best hitter in the lineup and replaced his production with Ed Lucas.

I'm also not sure what kind of production the Marlins can expect from Yelich down the stretch. I'm sold on him long term, but after a solid April, he's been pretty lousy since then. The line since May 1st has been .209/.319/.400/.719.

All of this is in addition to the bullpen woes.

The bottom line is that it's still too early to look at standings. It's early enough in the season that teams in the NL are still clustered together. Looking over the talent level of the team, it's really hard to see them as legitimate contenders.

I thought Dietrich was trash?

I thought Dietrich was trash?

This is misrepresenting the above post and everything I've said about Dietrich. In short, I'm not high on Dietrich and nothing about this season has told me to believe otherwise. His bat his relatively decent compared to the rest of the shit offense, but his glove is so terrible that he doesn't project to be a valuable second baseman long term.

They're over a third the way through the season. If you don't think that's significant, I don't know what to tell you. Fernandez is out, but for now Henderson Alvarez has been pulling Fernandez's weight.

Plus, if you're considering the team's future with Giancarlo, you better want this team to consider adding responsibly right now. Because I think he's made himself pretty clear, he's gone unless things change.

His offensive production this year is quite a bit better than what you were expecting (and right about what I predicted). And his glove is not as bad as it's been, while he'll never be a gold glove winner, he's not as bad long term as he's been the past few weeks.

It's clear that he is a long term bat for us at second base. You can't admit that?
