June 1, 201412 yr Gave up a bit much for an average at best reliever. But whatever. Hopefully he helps.
June 1, 201412 yr You know what, I've had enough of this negativity. This guy is the real deal, he's gonna be an All Star one day. He's here and here to stay. He's going to be a part of this playoff run. Go Team!
June 1, 201412 yr I just don't get it..... You trade a valuable commodity (top 40 pick in draft) for a middle reliever?
June 2, 201412 yr Dumb trade, but you never know what you'll get at the pick so whatever. I'm of the mindset that I'd rather trade FOR picks than trade them away for fringe relievers.
June 2, 201412 yr Apparently, there's more to come before the draft: http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com Trade Stanton to the Astros for the first overall pick, just cause.
June 2, 201412 yr Trade Stanton to the Astros for the first overall pick, just cause. Stanton, Heaney, and Fernandez (as a PTBNL) to the Orix Buffalos for Yunieksy Betancourt. Hill: "We see Yuniesky as a future hall of famer, much like Adeiny Trashavarria"
June 2, 201412 yr I just don't get it..... You trade a valuable commodity (top 40 pick in draft) for a middle reliever? I'm not crazy about the trade either, but I sort of feel like some people are overvaluing the pick a bit (after all we did get a pick from the Pirates for Gaby Sanchez). If the #39 pick in the draft one day becomes a MLB middle reliever, then you are probably pretty lucky. Perhaps it's not the greatest use of an asset, but I'm just not going to get all upset about giving up a player not even drafted yet for someone that could possibly help this year, especially when we have multiple additional picks in the top 100.
June 2, 201412 yr The Marlins are far enough away from being legitimate contenders that they shouldn't be trading away draft picks for "someone that could possibly help this year."
June 2, 201412 yr GCMS was the 76th overall pick guys. Just sayin the Marlins have the 76th pick this year. coincidence? doubt it. they know exactly what they're doing.
June 2, 201412 yr the Marlins have the 76th pick this year. coincidence? doubt it. they know exactly what they're doing. We'll draft some guy named Stan Miketon, whose full name is Cruzcarlo Gian Stan Miketon.
June 2, 201412 yr Nice way to dump some payroll I guess and sure he's meh. But he's CONTROLLABLE meh!
June 2, 201412 yr The Marlins are far enough away from being legitimate contenders that they shouldn't be trading away draft picks for "someone that could possibly help this year." I dunno man. Don't get me wrong, this trade looks like it's simply bad value. But... we can sit there and say we're far enough away from being legitimate contenders but it seems like the Marlins are the same team that keeps falling flat on their franchise face. Every time they are supposed to be good for once, they fuck up. Guys like Jeremy Hermida get worse. Chris Coghlan shits his pants. Scott Olsen fucking sucks. Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin fucking suck. And every year we see 'that one guy' who should take over. Heaney should be great. We'll be a competitor with him for sure. But then Heaney actually sucks and we wait so long on him that we're "supposed to be competitors" down the line with whatever players we draft with our super high picks because Heaney didn't pan out and become a core part of our team. Sorry for the rant, but my point here is that it's okay to move assets even if you're not supposed to be good. Why? Because we're a little over a quarter the way into the season and despite being broken to bits, we are right there in the mix of things. More so than we have been in a very, very long time.
June 2, 201412 yr Every team has plenty of players who don't pan out. It's no real reason to make a trade like this. You could just as easily make a list of young players who have panned out for this team, as well.
June 2, 201412 yr You don't trade the 39th pick in the draft (where actual good players can be chosen at a decent rate) and the draft pool money (which affects your overall draft flexibility) for a middle reliever. I find it hard to believe this wasn't a Loria deal. I hope to God it wasn't Jennings or Hill's decisions, because then we have a bigger problem.

It's already been confirmed that the draft pick was used as a salary dump to sign Kevin Gregg today.
June 2, 201412 yr This is a Loria deal. It's already been confirmed that the draft pick was used as a salary dump to sign Kevin Gregg today. Jesus Christ, really? It's a minor league contract!! Fire Loria into the sun.
June 3, 201412 yr Wait a minute. Nobody knows that Loria had anything to do with any of this. He may have said "fix the BP" or he may have said nothing. It's not like Jennings and Hill are unaware of the problem. And, what's so bad about it? They got an MLB average-type reliever for a draft pick. Which pick may turn out to be anything from nothing to fabulous, but that wouldn't be known for years. They need BP help NOW, not 3 or 4 years from now. They save a mill, which can be spent on the next guy. As for Gregg, he's over the hill, but he's on a minor league contract. Even if he fails when they bring him up he costs almost nothing.
June 3, 201412 yr Bryan Morris really isnt help. He is just another crappy bullpen arm. In the position the Marlins are in, they cant afford to halfass building the farm system.

You don't trade away a draft slot that has even a low probability of turning into something valuable for a pitcher who is mediocre at best in a year where the team isn't set to be legitimate contenders. In other words, there's a good chance that the pick never would have amounted to anything, but a team in the Marlins position takes that chance instead of trading it for a guy who you know sucks.
