December 11, 201411 yr We're assuming that Gordon will suck next year. That might very well be the case. However, he could continue being a 3 WAR player as he develops. The issue I have with the trade is that the risk of Gordon sucking is so much higher than his ceiling.
December 11, 201411 yr I want to see now with this apparent extra 10 mil if that means projected payroll is now 70-75 mil. Apparently the Angels were interested in Heaney. Kendrick had the Marlins on no-trade list, I have to think that's the reason.

The issue I have with the trade is that the risk of Gordon sucking is so much higher than his ceiling. or not even *sucking* per se, but the likelihood seems that Gordon regresses to the level that it was pointless to replace Hernandez/Dietrich with him. I mean Gordon's probably a 2-ish WAR guy. Was an improvement of 1 WAR (or less according to all the projections) worth giving up one of the 2 or 3 top lefty prospects in baseball? Kendrick was traded straight up for Andrew Heaney. I realize that Kendrick may have blocked a potential Marlins deal, but regardless a player of Howie Kendrick's talent level apparently was worth Heaney.
December 11, 201411 yr I'm not sure they should've given Stanton a 600 zillion contract if they're in a position where they needed to sell off prospects in order to get an extra starter and 1B. They aren't. But when you only have to give up a 25 year old guy in AA, a relief arm that you have plenty of, and a utility guy who will never be a starter it wouldn't hurt to get 14 million in salary relief. That can go right into the payroll for next year. People are severely overrating what we gave up. If Gordon can be a .715 OPS guy we are going to win this trade. Heaney is never going to be anything special. He was drafted as a guy with a high floor but also not a high ceiling. We have plenty of starting pitching in our system, the front office soured on Heaney, and we got a cost controlled every day starter at 2b for 5 years. We didn't get fleeced you guys just overrate our prospects.
December 11, 201411 yr You know, there's a pretty damn good chance Kendrick's 2015 alone outproduces Gordon over the next 4 years.
December 11, 201411 yr If we go ahead and trade for Morneau, sign a SP and add bench pieces we are a contender to make the playoffs and thats what counts. We all did this with MArisnick and Moran too and neither of them are going to be solid everyday players.

December 11, 201411 yr You're dumb. There's a very real chance Gordon doesn't produce more than 1 WAR a year over the next 4 years while kendrick is consistently a 4-5 WAR player. What's dumb about that hot shot?

"consistently a 4-5 war player" He's been a 4 or 5 war player 2 times in his career, he's 31, and is an expiring contract. Every other year he has been in the 2 WAR range and he gets hurt a lot.

December 11, 201411 yr What exactly did the Marlins give up of value besides Heaney? Kike Hernandez? Hatcher? Barnes? IF you think any of those guys are valuable players you are severely overrating the Marlins talent.
