December 11, 201411 yr A lot of people here seem to think 5 starts is a large sample size for Heaney, which is dumb. It means nothing. You can't project him out based on that. The Marlins are about the only people who think Nicolino is more valuable than Heaney, btw I think Nicolino, in Marlins Park, is going to be a very good major league starter. Not saying Heaney wouldn't have been, but to me, they are interchangable.
December 11, 201411 yr Nicolino is an unproven starter. He has to start striking people out to be worth his value, The key to that is he has to do it while at the same time continue to not walk people. can't wait for nicolinos sub 2 mlb k/9. Yeah he's going to be great! Yea, just like Henderson Alvarez and his awesome K rates? Strikeouts aren't everything. In fact, if you can have success without recording a single K, it's completely irrelevant IMO. Not every pitcher has to dominate people with 95+ stuff in order to succeed, Nicolino is clearly the rare exception to the rule up to this point.
December 11, 201411 yr They can't/won't trade Nicolino, he's Heaney's replacement as our next major league ready starter. First off...that makes me mildly sad... Second, they can most certainly trade Nicolino. We still have Urena/German/Williams/Disco/Conley/Kolek in the system under this scenario. It's not ideal but we could get by without Nicolino. That said if we're in "now" mode you need to trade 2nd tier pitcher like Nicolino (aka a #3 or 4 starting pitcher at best) for a guy like Morneau at a crucial position. Jose is signed to 2019, Cosart isn't a free agent until 2020, Alvarez isn't a free agent until after 2018, Eovaldi isn't a free agent until after 2018, and Koehler isn't a free agent until after 2019. Basically, if we want to keep all of these guys they are all signed to the team for another four years. At the very least it feels like Jose and Alvarez are good bets to be consistently good, Eovaldi has the stuff to bounce back to a #3, Cosart even at his worst at Marlins Park is a #4/5, and Koehler is improving. I think this team could definitely get by trading Nicolino barring injuries. There are a few college pitchers we just drafted this year (Mader/Holmes off the top of my head) that look really good and can move up the system quickly. Basically I'm saying the long term success of the team isn't hurt by trading Nicolino. The short term success of the team IS hurt by not trading for Morneau.

This is all great and I agree... until one of them goes down for the year with a torn labrum. NOW WHAT!?!? That's why you need to keep Nicolino. He is literally the only legit major league ready arm we have left now. You can say Disco is ML ready until you're blue in the face but the bottom line is he was pretty shitty every opportunity he was given. It's called depth. You need to have a little bit if you want to win games. More so in the starting pitching dept than anywhere else in the organization. Nicolino is absolutely needed.
December 11, 201411 yr Again, I said it wasn't exactly ideal. But I'd rather improve our team by trading Nicolino for Morneau and testing the injury bug and the rest of our minor league pitching depth than sign Morse, simply because Morneau is a better bet to be successful. The Marlins basically gave a big FU to depth when they traded there SP depth in Heaney, their 2B depth in Hernandez, their C/2B/utility depth in Barnes, and their bullpen depth in Hatcher to get Dee Gordon to fill 2B and $12.5 million cash. Can't speak about depth when the Marlins pretty much gave that talk the middle finger. If you are gonna talk about going all in to win, you can't let Justin Nicolino hold you back. Even if he pans out, Nicolino will not be a viable good starter with the major league rotation until 2016. He is not really in discussion to be a starter outside of worst case scenario next season. I'd rather trade Disco or Conley or even Urena to be completely honest, but I wouldn't let Nicolino be the complete stop to negotiations for Morneau. If push came to shove I'd trade him for a good 1B in a heartbeat.
December 11, 201411 yr It is called depth. That same depth is why we can trade Nicolino. Ur bringing up depth and then saying we can't trade him when depth is what we do have on the pitching front. And if one tears a labrum then so be it because there's still that very depth again. I'd love to keep Nicolino myself but I really think the power bat is a necessity right now and if Nicolino is the price I'd strongly consider it.
December 11, 201411 yr You guys do get this was basically the dodgers buying prospects from us for $12.5m right? I think we also get an all star 2B that had 92 runs and over 60 SB. Not sure though.

Just saying.
December 11, 201411 yr We just traded Andrew Heaney. I'm pretty sure we can trade Nicolino. We can do whatever the fuck Loria wants to do as long as Stanton approves it first.
December 11, 201411 yr Morneau is not worth Nicolino. If the Indians could get someone like Brandon Moss (who right now is younger and better than Morneau) for a middling prospect like Joe Wendle, you shouldn't have to give up that kind of talent. That's also why this Heaney deal is stupid, because bigger name players were being traded for lesser prospects (see also: the Samardzija trade to the White Sox).
December 11, 201411 yr Heyman and Rosenthal just said on mlb network that the Marlins are instant contenders if they acquire a power lefty hitter. Morneau anyone?

December 11, 201411 yr Realistically, we all know that Dietrich is going in this Morneau trade. He no longer serves a purpose and the front office hates him. Morneau for Dietrich and an arm, I'd be cool with.

He might actually hit OK in Denver, gives them a cheaper stopgap than Morneau while adding to the organizations minor league depth.
