Who gets the Bench Spots?

I doubt Reed Johnson makes the team because he hasn't had the spring he had last year and he's just not as needed as he was a year ago with Ichiro and other veterans on the team and with the utility infielder spots being valued a bit more this year.

Also, I hate to be this guy, but I did start a thread to discuss these kinds of spring questions. No hate, just sayin.

Rojas is too void of offense to replace Hech. Rojas would only make this team as a defensive replacement. I don't think even the Marlins make him the starting shortstop after Hech.

Rojas had essentially the same value (0.5 fWAR to 0.6 fWAR) as Hech in 2014. Granted, the more plate appearances Rojas gets, the more it affects his WAR negatively, but then again the more fielding chances he gets, the more it affects his WAR positively.

However, and this is BIG coming from me guys, so take a seat: Hech has way more offensive upside than Rojas. Right now, they are probably equally as valuable, but Hech has a much higher ceiling and should therefore be given yet another chance to improve.

If Rojas could hit, even just a little? I would give him the job. Unfortunately, he basically comes up to bat with a tennis racket that has no strings.

They have four or five bench spots depending on how many pitchers they carry. I would think they need to go with five bench spots and carry 12 pitchers. Mathis and Suzuki are locks. I think Baker is as well because of his contract. That leaves two spots. I think it's Solano and Valdespin based on versatility. Love the starting lineup, but, our late inning pinch hitting options are going to be brutal.

Ichiro, Mathis, Baker, and pick a scrub.

Seriously, no real need for anyone else. Carry an extra pitcher.

You need guys in the NL for day to day management.

I think Solano is a lock based on last year, and the last spot they'll give to Kelly/Brignac/other veteran who gets hot and has a good camp. Dietrich, Bour, and Valdespin should get everyday PA in AAA. See if anything is there. They can always come up and replace someone in the summer.

Maybe they keep a 13th pitcher initially just because they may not want to DFA one of Hand/McKirahan, but ultimately they are just going to need the position bodies and a 5 man bench.

Rojas, Dietrich, and Bour sent down.

There goes the thought of Rojas' defense winning out. He'll have his use later but his lack of a bat hurts him for now.

Dietrich again hits the glass ceiling but with so many bench options this spring, he might not have been the best candidate for a spot regardless.

Bour wasn't likely to make the club out of spring but he'll contribute later on as well.

So we're down to Solano, Kelly, Brignac, Valdespin, and Sizemore for now. If they want a 5th outfielder its from Johnson, Colvin, or Gillespie, none of which have really stood out, making it more likely that they carry two of the above infielders with one being Kelly or Valdespin for their outfield work.

Prado is the 5th OF. They should carry more IF options.

Don Kelly and Jordany Valdespin are both bad at baseball, compared to their peers. Don Kelly seems like a good human being and had a huge fan following in Detroit. Jordany Valdespin is human garbage and teammates hated him when he was a Met. Neither should really be on a Major League roster, but if one of them makes it for versatility reasons, why not the one who isn't a diarrhea person?

Character clause, bitches.

Well said but the counter argument is that Valdespin was diarrhea in the Mets organization. Nothing has pointed to him being disliked in Miami. With the front office and coaching staff emphasizing the team first mentality the last couple of seasons, if Valdespin was clubhouse diarrhea here he'd already be gone especially considering how many options we have besides him.

(I never thought I'd use the word diarrhea so many times in one post)
