July 7, 201511 yr Valdespin is a career .218/.273/.372 hitter and he is below average defensively at every position he plays. What exactly do you like about Valdespin? Because this is kind of like saying "I love anal bleeding. Penis seepage is just meh". You are one sick dude.
July 7, 201511 yr I think you all may have missed something here. Keeping him down probably 25 days will knock his service time out of Super2 land. They'll save $2.5 million next year. The organization can calculate this pretty accurately at this point tracking every teams service time, so I wouldn't expect him back until it's clear he won't be arbitration eligible. Based on the dates, August 1 seems about right. I like it because he sucks right now, but I also like shedding payroll in the hopes they go after an ace SP next year. Every bit is going to help.
July 7, 201511 yr And as you said on that other link, it's not just $ next year. This is huge savings in his future arbitration throughout his club control. Super 2's make more because they have 4 times through arbitration instead of 3. It's a smart move because he's not doing good anyway (so very unlikely any kind of suit against the Marlins) and we're not going anywhere this year anyway, and it's a move that saves something like 5-7m total.
July 7, 201511 yr Author The Marlins would be idiots to let Ozuna become a Super 2 because he isn't that good and doesn't deserve it. So it's not a silly "Loria being cheap scenario; it's a smart baseball move.
July 7, 201511 yr it's not a silly "Loria being cheap scenario; it's a smart baseball move. ummm I believe those are on in the same. I read a sweet article about how the Blue Jays trade was BRILLIANT
July 7, 201510 yr MarlinsLou, I love the enthusiasm, but you and I both know that money isn't going into buying an ace in the offseason. But honestly it doesn't hurt to send Ozuna down right now for money reasons. Seasons lost anyway so why not save a few bucks down the road. Plus it gives us more Morse YAY
July 7, 201510 yr Eh I dunno about *ace* money but seems a pretty deep FA pitching group next season, particularly if Cosart doesn't get it together they'll go get a good starter to pair with Jose and Alvarez. We'll have to see what happens with Latos.

But honestly it doesn't hurt to send Ozuna down right now for money reasons. Seasons lost anyway so why not save a few bucks down the road. Plus it gives us more Morse YAY Likely not, but they can. It's the same train of thought - nothing changes until Loria goes. There is no reason they shouldn't have a $100 million payroll next year.
July 7, 201510 yr This is putting the organizational depth on display front and center. As bad as Ozuna was at the plate, I cringe at the replacement options. But wait, Dan Jennings and Mike Hill are amazing.....12 years of......oops failures :ohmy

Delusional.....
July 7, 201510 yr YEAH It is totally Loria's fault that Ozuna's effectiveness went down! Loria owns the team, and picks the people, who pick the players. So yes, it's partially on him.
July 7, 201510 yr YEAH It is totally Loria's fault that Ozuna's effectiveness went down! Well by marlins logic Redmond was the reason all our shitty players sucked (Latos, Cosart, Cishek, Morse) so we can then surmise through that that Jennings is responsible for Ozuna sucking, no? I guess we have to give credit for to Jennings for Yelich's turn around then tho.
July 7, 201510 yr Author Loria owns the team, and picks the people, who pick the players. So yes, it's partially on him. Oh so you thought before the season that Ozuna should have been off the roster then? Cool.
July 7, 201510 yr Author Hey @Fotog, when Loria is no longer the owner and things go wrong -- who will you blame then? I know you need a scapegoat for everything.
July 7, 201510 yr Hey @Fotog, when Loria is no longer the owner and things go wrong -- who will you blame then? I know you need a scapegoat for everything. I can't wait for that to see who gets blamed. They'll probably still blame Loria just because.
July 7, 201510 yr Hey @Fotog, when Loria is no longer the owner and things go wrong -- who will you blame then? I know you need a scapegoat for everything. This many things don't go wrong for anyone else. We haven't been to the playoffs in 13 years. We have the 3rd longest current playoff drought in the majors. Since then, we've fired 6 different managers, and are still paying 2 of them. We've had a payroll above $100M for approximately half a season. Since 2003, we've had a countless number of PR issues, have turned over 2 cores, and have seen every team in our division win the division at least once. I don't think we'll be blaming anyone when Loria is gone. We're blaming Loria because SO MUCH has gone wrong. One can't realistically expect this much to go wrong under anyone else. Because it hasn't.
July 7, 201510 yr Author I don't forgive Loria for mistakes he's made but when people start blaming him for not foreseeing Ozuna's decline, well then its crazy sorry.
July 7, 201510 yr I don't forgive Loria for mistakes he's made but when people start blaming him for not foreseeing Ozuna's decline, well then its crazy sorry. I haven't seen anyone blame Loria for Ozuna's decline solely. It's the aggregation of failures. If this had happened to the Pirates with Polanco, Pirates fans should be understanding because their team is built so well that it can be chalked up to bad luck. For us, when year after year our teams are built with scotch tape and elmer's glue, we have a right to be pissed off when things keep going wrong.
July 7, 201510 yr Author Yeah but some people are blaming the wrong culprit. Loria's past mistakes have NOTHING to do with this year's failures. He invested and added every piece he should have added. They just haven't performed.
July 7, 201510 yr (Fr. team transaction page) Miami Marlins selected the contract of Jordany Valdespin from New Orleans Zephyrs. Officially Valdespin gets callup, replacing Ozuna.
July 7, 201510 yr Author I can't wait for that to see who gets blamed. They'll probably still blame Loria just because. Do you and Admin think Jeffrey Loria is a good owner?
