Peter Gammons put up a piece the other day touching on a few recent Marlin topics and he seemed to have a different, positive take on them. Thought I'd share the interesting points...

 

He repeated that Fernandez would not be traded, pointing to Loria's "fondess" for him.

 

He said Mike Hill and the Marlins have had not one but two productive meetings with Boras where the team and Mattingly got Boras' "full support" for their Jose innings plans for 2016... so is this topic already put to rest?

 

He said the Boras situation is more about David Samson not keeping his mouth shut but that beyond those public comments the relationship between Boras and the Fish is fine.

 

Don Mattingly seems both relaxed and eager, and is already moving his family to Miami.

 

Jim Benedict's hiring, for $2.5 million over 5 years, is a sign of long term commitment. He says Benedict will fix veteran pitchers and be the finish school for young arms.

 

He called Loria "extremely passionate" but admits that he "sometimes gets sidetracked." But he said Loria does understand that he needs to rely on his baseball people more. Whether he sticks to that plan is entirely different though. 

 

He called Mike Hill "bright, very solid, and drama free" and commended his surrounding upper executives for the same reasons.

 

He said that despite the Boras-Ozuna drama, Ozuna is still their best trade chip to try and upgrade their pitching without overspending in free agency.

 

Overall he praised Loria and company for legitimately trying to move this organization in the right direction. That they are trying to create "a serious, winning baseball team" and are trying to "find, scout, and carefully develop talent." And that Loria is trying "to prove baseball can work in South Florida."

Spend $30+ million in free agency on two starting pitchers and a platoon mate for Bour and keep Ozuna. Ditch Koehler/Phelps and Dunn for younger lefties to help mitigate payroll if need be. Also, draft the best player available regardless of salary demand and go out and invest in international FA infrastructure.

maybe he just assumes that Dee is fast enough to sprint out from second should a ball head towards center and they can go without a CF

I'm not for moving Ozuna, but what would be wrong with Yelich in center field? He has been one of the better left fielders the last couple years. I don't see why he could not hold his own in center. Just a thought.

despite what the gold glove committee thinks, yelich really doesn't grade out that well as a defender. he's okay in LF but would be a disaster in CF

FanGraphs is now 25% of that vote, plus he has been ranking high in defensive runs saved in the last couple years. I think he does rather well out there, despite the slightly above average arm. And that is being generous as far as the arm is concerned.

 

 

Yelich would probably be an average CF'er.

 

Which would be a downgrade from the current situation.

 

Especially if the plan is to have Dietrich play LF. He would definitely be a disaster out there.

This team hasn't made the playoffs in 12 years and it's because of made up payroll restrictions and baseball decisions being made by an art dealer.

you should be objective in all cases...if someone is making a mess then it should be called out.

 

It isn't the journalist responsibility to say, "well he didn't meeeeeaaan to..."

Yes they should be objective but if there's no mess to call out then they shouldn't assume there's a mess to call out.

 

Extreme example to make a point but if Jeffrey Loria saves a baby from a burning building the article should say "Loria saves baby from fire" not "Loria saves baby but will probably try to sell the baby back to its family because he's cheap."

The article in question from Gammons says Loria and the front office are, at the least, making positive attempts in the right direction this offseason as far as righting the ship. Admin claims this to be true. Gammons is doing the right thing by reporting these things as positive. For people to want Gammons to post negativity about all of this would be wrong on Gammons' part. @DTrain claims what Gammons is doing is irresponsible journalism just because it's positive. I believe it'd be irresponsible for any journalist to take something positive the Marlins have done and report it as negative just because of their history.
