Peter Gammons on the Marlins

And then tore it down...and it's been baseball purgatory since then.

Actually, that's not true.

And I don't like Loria at all, but just saying.

The article in question from Gammons says Loria and the front office are, at the least, making positive attempts in the right direction this offseason as far as righting the ship. Admin claims this to be true. Gammons is doing the right thing by reporting these things as positive. For people to want Gammons to post negativity about all of this would be wrong on Gammons' part. @DTrain claims what Gammons is doing is irresponsible journalism just because it's positive. I believe it'd be irresponsible for any journalist to take something positive the Marlins have done and report it as negative just because of their history.

But is Gammons doing the right thing? He is no better than Passan...they are both propagating a lie.

Stories should be objective: "Here's what he has done...none of it has worked..."

The truth is that there is no story here and really SI or some other source...Gammons directly?...was probably told they would get access...and access equals money. Publicity equals money.

Win-win...Marlins keep people talking...Gammons meets his writing quota with a pretty vanilla fluff piece.

....again this is not a defense of Passan. It's even easier to write a nasty article full of vitriol and poison.

Whether he "tore it down" (which I disagree with) or not, he still won a World Series, and it's not like he hasn't tried fielding competitive teams since. It just hasn't worked out.

I would argue there has been more energy focused on fielding a lucrative business while providing the appearance of a competitive team.

The team was not torn down after 2003. Many of the same players were kept together after that year and the team failed.

The tear down happened after the 2005 season.

Hey y'all wanna piss your pants laughing? Go check out the DBacks new uniforms. Those of you who still think we have the worst uniforms in baseball are gonna be relieved and thankful for what we have. Go check out their laughable little league uniforms and get back to me.

Get back to him in this thread - http://www.marlinsbaseball.com/topic/73016-d-backs-new-look/

If I'm not mistaken I thought I saw a Peter Gammons article saying that the Marlins were also interested in Wei-Yin Chen or maybe it was Jon Heyman.  If Jordan Zimmerman got 21 million I have to think Kennedy and Chen will be looking at around 15 to 16,000,000 or perhaps we could work out a trade with the Padres and have them eat about 15 million of the remainder on Shields  contract and thst would bring Shields down to about 15 million per year for three years.

I still think that is the ballpark they would go for. $13-15 million per year. I just don't see them going more than 4 years on any pitcher.

FALSE. We let Derek lee and Pudge leave stupidly. Only too see Pudge continue his resurrection elsewhere and in process the loss of D Lee defense. We in turn traded for Hee Seop Choi, than later tried to correct our mistake by signing Carlos Delgado and trading for Paul LoDuca and Mota, only too see the team implode from there. If cheap ass would of just kept the core together for one more season atleast, and added a few HELP pieces along the way we could of had a strong chance at a back to back.

If I remember correctly, Loria traded Lee in order to save enough money to make a run at Pudge. Pudge went with the better offer with Detroit.

Doesnt detract from the main point that this was yet another example of Loria's cheapness.

Why would you sell off a player and then try to pay another? Try to sign pudge and then trade Lee if you end up signing him.

Signs of the dumpster fire were there, even in 2003

Well, he did win a World Series.

I'd say he had a part in it. But I'd give the bigger part to Dave Dombrowski.

Gammons has always liked the Marlins, but I think he's giving Loria too much of a pass

WAAAAY too much

I'm not buying this fluff either. Loria has proven what he is, and that is the cheapest (for sure) and worst owner (absolutely true) in MLB and maybe in all sports.

Painting the Marlins owner in a positive light is irresponsible journalism.

This team hasn't made the playoffs in 12 years and it's because of made up payroll restrictions and baseball decisions being made by an art dealer.

:heart

Please let's not do this thing again where we relive any moment from 2004-present

Why not there have been so many wonderful winning moments from loads of playoffs games since then !

And why ? Because Loria WAS TRYING !

:rolleyes

Can't remember who proposed it but this fanbase (such as it is) is only one Donald Sterling rant tape away from liberation.

Viva la revolucion!

while loria is obviously an asshole, he's not an asshole on the Sterling level

So 2 guys leaving = team torn apart? That happens to teams every year, and, as you said, they tried to sign guys too and were clearly trying to win at the time.

Tearing a team apart to me is a firesale. That's not what happened after '03. Hate Loria all you want, but be fair.
