Posted December 5, 20159 yr The Marlins are also open to signing Cliff Lee, who is attempting a comeback. Heard that on MB.com the other day! A couple of trade candidates could be San Diego's James Shields and Boston's Wade Miley. Maybe It may come to the point where Miami has to overpay on a free agent like Yovani Gallardo, or hope that someone like Doug Fister is open to a one-year deal -- with the hope of having a bounce-back season. Maybe The full scoop (should be the name of his blog) - http://m.marlins.mlb.com/news/article/158891428/marlins-eyeing-starting-pitchers-at-meetings
December 5, 20159 yr Gallardo's declining strikeout rate is definitely worrisome, but he still gets a ton of ground balls and only allowed 15 homers last year in a hitter's park. Plus, he eats innings. I think getting him would be pretty cool on the right deal.

Oh definitely, and to be perfectly honest, with Alvarez out (gone?), he'd probably be our second-best starter. But hey; we need to shore up the staff somehow, and Gallardo is probably the best realistic option available.

But hey; we need to shore up the staff somehow, and Gallardo is probably the best realistic option available. yeah i'm not opposed to him, but he could be an absolute disaster with those periphs declining so bad. it's gonna take at least 3 years and $40m or so to get him (going by Happ's contract)
December 5, 20159 yr reclamation projects are always the order of the day because the team is just so darn "poor". maybe if they got a new stadium?
December 5, 20159 yr gotta love the team philosophy of getting pitchers who suck (cheap) and "hoping" they turn it around magically
December 5, 20159 yr Id be OK with this if it was one guy who's coming back from an injury and wasn't showing decline before the injury. But the marlins always have a few of these guys playing major roles and they are always old and clearly shit. oh i don't have any problem rolling the dice on a few guys on short contracts each season. my issue is that that seems to be ALL they do. Loria has a fetish for collecting past their prime guys and seems to think fielding an all-star lineup from 5 years ago is amazing. Yes, every successful team usually takes a flyer on one or two guys looking for bounceback seasons but they typically sprinkle in some proven, consistent talent as well with their signings - something Loria does not seem to bother with that often.
December 5, 20159 yr Feeling convinced Fister ends up with us. The signings are heating up now with the Meetings starting Monday. Grienke and now the Shark sign within the past 24hrs.
December 5, 20159 yr polly's comments are my favorites. Shout out to your declining K comments. I agree. Gallardo needs to be second in the rotation. After hand.
December 5, 20159 yr After the year Cashner had I wonder if he would be worth trying to trade for. May be possible to buy low on him.
December 5, 20159 yr I'd be all for James Shields if San Diego is eating some of the contract. We tried last year to get him and his value decreased after this season. Definitely has the potential to be the #2 starter we need. Also don't believe he would deplete our farm system since, well..., there really isn't much to take from the farm as it is. As long as it isn't Naylor (and to a lesser extent Kolek), I'd be willing to part with it for Shields. Fister on a one year deal also isn't a bad idea. He's a year removed from back to back 4+ WAR seasons. Even if he is on the decline it is worth a shot to see what he has. If it doesn't work out, it isn't hurting the team long term anyway. I say do two of these things: trade for Shields, sign Chen, and grab Fister on a one year deal. If I have to guess the Padres eat somewhere between $10-15 million off his deal in a trade, Chen signs for around $95 million over 5 years, and Fister takes a $15 million for a single season (hopefully incentive laden). If we sign Chen and grab Fister, that'll be a little over $30 million added in payroll next year. Chen hopefully becomes a long term #2 and #3 for us, and Fister either plays so well that he becomes a trade candidate at the deadline, or he plays so poorly that he becomes a trade candidate at the deadline. Either way he doesn't become along term risk. At this point the Marlins let most of the surefire top tier free agents pass them by, which should've been expected. However, the going rate for pitchers on the market is much higher than ever before, and add to the fact they let Hendo go to save $5 million. At this point the Marlins have to take some chances. Otherwise they can stand pat and bank on guys like Jarred Cosart, Tom Koehler, Justin Nicolino, and Jose Urena being the answers at starting pitcher.
December 5, 20159 yr Look guys we know if we recognize our faults the office does as well . I say we end up with 2/3 of gallardo shields and colon.
December 5, 20159 yr Author I'm fine with Cliff Lee on a 1 year.... What about with an option for a 2nd year that vests based on IP or games started?
December 5, 20159 yr What about with an option for a 2nd year that vests based on IP or games started? Yeah, bitch, talk dirty to me.
December 5, 20159 yr Author Yeah, bitch, talk dirty to me. Finally its working, when I say this stuff to girls they tune me out and walk away.
December 5, 20159 yr Yeah I know the Fish are cheap and love to try reclamation projects but I gotta admit the contracts being handed out to free agent pitchers are scary even if we weren't so cheap. I'm relieved we aren't paying what these other teams are paying for pitching. Not sure where the middle ground is though.
December 6, 20159 yr Author Not sure where the middle ground is though. I have a few ideas but I don't want to get @gizmo all hot and bothered
