The pen per Scoop

Oh I agree 100%. Relievers are so volatile and even bad ones can come in during situations where they give up 3 runs and have a 0.00 ERA at the end of the day. I get that completely.

It's more that the team had to see some decent things for Barraclough after trading Cishek for him, and it wasn't like he performed even mediocre when called up. He was one of the team's best relievers until the last week and a half. He most certainly deserved first rights at a bullpen spot this year. I know the walks are definitely an issue but he earned at least a chance to prove last season wasn't a fluke.

Both McGowan and Breslow have had chances in recent years and haven't delivered. But it felt like they had the inside track regardless of performance in spring training due to experience. It still feels to me like a Mattingly old school type of move rather than the right move.

Honestly, I don't mind Breslow. I actually feel he could be fine and isn't a bad choice. He has a track record of pitching a lot of innings and we know it's difficult to pitch at Fenway. I don't feel good about McGowan though. Failed starter who hasn't pitched many innings as a reliever and has no consistent track record. I'd rather see him prove himself in AAA for a chance at the 'pen in late May.

I'd like Wittgren in the 'pen but I'll say that every year until they're actually forced to do it and he proves the front office that he's good enough to be a 7th/8th inning regular.

I'm still surprised Barraclough didn't earn himself an automatic bullpen spot. Literally went 11 straight appearances without giving up a run last season. Even with a suspect end he still finished last season with a 2.59 ERA. I have to imagine he's more trustworthy (and higher potential) than Dustin McGowan and his near 7 ERA last year. Breslow also hasn't been good since 2013 so it doesn't seem to be a good choice. Cody Ege was absolutely dominant at every level he pitched last season and is a much needed lefty out of the pen.

It seems obvious that Mattingly is an old school mind that is trusting the older, more experienced relievers over the young guys, even if it very easily could be to the detriment of the team.

I think the results will say everything.

I can't remember the Marlins ever having  a BullPen as underwhelming as this one  going into a new season

I am certain the faces will change very soon, new signings appear imminent

I think Barraclough only stays in the minors a couple weeks to refine those mechanics. I see him coming back pretty soon.

Barraclough, Ellington, Ege, Wittgren. We have players waiting in the wings if any of the guys in the majors to start the season struggle. That's without the possibility we pick up a cut from another team.

I also like the Mattingly is carrying two lefties even if breslow hasn't been very good. Very old school of him but it allows more in game management. Whereas before if we used Dunn we had no lefty to pitch to lefties.

Marlins interested in Miguel Gonzalez, which makes sense because he is bad.

The Quick Opinion: After three seasons of batted ball magic from 2012-2014, the clock struck midnight for Miguel Gonzalez' unremarkable stuff in 2015. He was a bit unlucky, but he is at best a low end option in most fantasy drafts in 2016.

That has old "Marlins" all over it.

Wow this guy is set to make $5.1 million. What a joke.

What is Mattingley's bullpen management like? Does he have a reputation of pulling guys early or leaving them in too long?

Mixed bagged. Some say he's turrible not dusty baker esq but not good but others say he knows his relievers and when to mix and match.

We lose pretty much nothing trying some of these guys out. If they suck we DFA them. If they're serviceable we keep them. Better than doing nothing.

Well, we could lose games...

I'm sure we'll all learn to hate him like every fanbase hates their manager.
