The Marlins are pursuing Rays starters Chris Archer, Matt Moore and Jake Odorizzi, but Tampa Bay isn’t very fond of losing a starter for a package involving Hechavarria, according to Rosenthal. A source told Rosenthal the Marlins are “trying like crazy” to land any of the Rays’ three starters. Miami has expressed interest in upgrading its starting rotation, though it seemed to be adamant about not moving any player on its major league roster. Hechavarria, 27, is having his worst offensive year since 2013. After batting .278 last season, the Cuban shortstop has batted .238/.274/.336 with three home runs and 27 RBIs. Hechavarria isn’t arbitration eligible until next season and won’t be a free agent until 2019, so the Marlins would be parting with a long-term option at shortstop. Beyond Rojas, Miami doesn’t have any immediate shortstop depth to turn to. Rojas has been used off the bench and is batting .261 with 10 RBIs over 68 games this season. The Marlins are seeking stability in their rotation, with Jose Fernandez and Adam Conley serving as the lone Miami starters to have consistent first halves. Archer could be Miami’s primary target, but he isn’t having a dominant season, pitching to a 4.68 ERA and 4.36 FIP over 117.1 innings. Odorizzi hasn’t been much better this season, pitching to a 4.47 ERA and 4.39 FIP over 104.2 innings. Moore has pitched to a 4.46 ERA and 4.59 FIP over 109.0 innings. A rival executive told Rosenthal he doesn’t expect the Marlins to get any more than a rental starter before the deadline.

July 17, 201610 yr Author In another post, I believe in a game thread, there was a discussion with Dee coming back if there is a way to keep DD in the lineup. I am having a major brain fart as to who of those in the starting line up could be moved around in the infield (assuming Bour comes back at close to 100% so no change there). Help me out here.
July 17, 201610 yr it was said before by others and myself that this would make the most sense if we are indeed to trade someone THIS season for a starter to help our shitty rotation. you can't move DD really because of Gordon not being allowed to play should we make the postseason ( a fact people still seemingly forget when they start proposing trade ideas) and Rojas also plays premium defense which would help at least a little bit when taking over for Adeiny. Rojas doesn't really have enough AB's for us to assume his bat would be comparable so that would be the gamble we'd take as he could regress to a sub-mendoza line bat for all we know once he's out there every day.

July 17, 201610 yr Would you deal Hech in a package for Rich Hill? nope. i'm actually in favor of not trading for anyone this year simply because even if we pick up another #3 (best case) or 4 it's still not going to be enough to go deep in the playoffs because our rotation is THAT bad and good pitching will beat good hitting. i'd rather keep what little we have in the farm and roll with the team as it is now and take our chances. If Chen could ever pull his head out of his ass and pitch to career norms that would be the equivalent of picking up a starter at the deadline - but he seems to be stuck on shitty mode this year so F him.

July 17, 201610 yr Author Would you deal Hech in a package for Rich Hill? I wouldn't. Hill is doing well this year, but too many minor league deals to start the season and also has been DFA/releases as well as a contract with Long Island Ducks. And part of his time with the Red Sox was while recovering from Tommy Johns surgery.

July 17, 201610 yr I think the major point from that article that people aren't hitting on is that the Rays really aren't that fond of Hech as a centerpiece on any trade, but especially for Archer. And the Rays seem like they are in a position to prioritize either prospects or young, cost controlled players. And the Marlins have zero to offer.

July 17, 201610 yr I think the drop off between Hech and Rojas isn't that big a deal. Same bat, maybe a little less ups at short. If you can fool a team into thinking Hech is a centerpiece, sure. Do it.

As a matter of fact, Hech is so good defensively that he still has a 0.4 WAR despite almost historically bad offensive numbers. He's basically Rey Ordonez, which is perfectly fine for a shortstop, especially when the lineup around him is good enough to hide him.
