Jeter/Sherman target $90 mil payroll

There is no way a rebuilding Marlins will be competitive in three years. Also. Every player shold be marketed. Even realmuto and yelich. The one player I think maybe gets to stay is Bour. There are many options at first base for other teams to chose from and he's been a little injury prone. And someone needs to hit a dinger every now and then to keep the coming years 10~15.000 in attendance hoping.

They can absolutely be competitive within 3 years.  They have plenty of pieces that can be dealt for legitimate value.  Stanton despite his contract can get a pretty good return, Ozuna will get 2 top prospects, Bour will get either a few solid prospects or a really good prospect, Straily can get a few nice prospects due to his team control, Gordon can get a nice return, and Prado, Ziegler, and Tazawa can get you something depending on how much money this ownership is wiling to eat.

The move is to completely rebuild and trade everyone except for Yelich, and even he is available for the right price.  Then, if you get someone to take almost all of Stanton's deal, which i think you will be able to, you eat as much money in Tazawa and Ziegler's deal because they are up after next year and if you eat a majority of their deals, especially Ziegler, you can get a really nice prospect or 2.

Dont even worry about trading Chen.  You will have to eat most of his deal if you do trade him, and to me you wait a year, hope he is able to pitch a full year, and then see if you can get someone to take more of his deal next year after he proves that he is more healthy.  He is not worth including in a legitimate asset just to dump salary.

Realmuto also can get an enormous haul, and given that he only has 3 years left of team control, I think you deal him.  Yelich is a much better player and i think he will still be really good and really cheap when we are ready to compete again.

The fact that they're looking to set payroll at 90 million is concerning. This is going to be a half-ass rebuild, it seems.

Or it could be a slow rebuild.

Firesales can definitely devalue players. Could try and sell in two parts? I imagined this was the path, with Stanton going first.

Volquez, Tazawa and Ziegler coming off the books after next season. Just putting that out there.

Yes which is why they should bite the bullet and try to win in 2018. If it fails, then revisit the rebuild.

But doesn't Stanton's salary go up even higher in 2019? If they're losing money now and don't step backwards financially won't they be in an even bigger hole in 2019 even with all those contracts coming off the books? As much as I want them to try and win, doesn't delaying a rebuild make it potentially worse?

Every team is expected to receive about $50 million from the Disney deal of them buying rights to MLB. That should help close the gap on some of the debt but the point is for them to get out of debt completely and rebuild the team in the process.

Tear it all down with the exception of Yelich and Realmuto. Everyone else should be available. Cash in on Ozuna and Stanton. Just seeing Gordon making $10 million made me cringe.

Well aware, but I don't quite see how that will alter the new ownership's planning.

Also, for what it's worth, Chen's salary will increase from $10MM to $20MM after next season. For 2019, they still have $84 million committed to only 5 players (and that's after Volquez, Ziegler, and Tazawa come off the books).

Ya, the fact that theyre contracts are up after next season doesnt mean we should run it back, it means we should eat as much of their money in a trade as possible to get the best possible return.

My hate for Mike Hill has grown beyond comprehension

It likely won’t alter new ownerships planning.

Sort of related, I’m sure I’m not the only one on the board who’s looking at their target payroll of $90 million and shaking my head.

Years of pain with Loria, and now new owners come in (have SEVERAL investors unlike Mas who is beyond loaded with cash) and they want to have the FIFTH lowest payroll in MLB ($111,000,000 less than the Yankees and   $152,000,000 less than the Dodgers payroll).

That’s going to be a very awkward start to the relationship between new ownership and already disgruntled fan base.

You think they should aim lower than 90 million is what you're saying?

Absolutely. Cash in on all the good players, and keep every albatross contract except for Stanton. Once those contracts are off the books, you'll be clean and the young players you traded for will hopefully be ready to contribute. Then you supplement with free agents.

I won't watch Marlins baseball next year if they trade Stanton and just a few others. It won't fix anything.

I'd watch regardless but I agree that it probably wouldn't fix things to do a half-assed rebuild. Either do nothing or go wild with it and unload everyone that you can.

Completely agreed.  You cant half ass it with the situation we are in. With Jose still in the picture either with a long term deal for him or if we traded him before he hit free agency for the Sale package, this would be completely different, but this team is literally a mess in every area.  We have no pitching, horrible long term contracts, no minor league system to speak of, and bad debt.

We have to completely rebuild and do it the right way.  Eat the contracts that expire after next year, cash in on assets like Bour, Stanton, Ozuna, Dee, Straily, and maybe Yelich and Realmuto, Then start investing heavily in the draft, player development and IFA, and we should be able to rebuild relatively quickly if we do it right.  We are in a much better starting position from a tradeable asset standpoint than the Astros and Cubs were.  The fans will be pissed, but you cant run a team thinking of the fans over the long term sustainability of the team.  The fans arent exactly coming out in droves now, so I dont really care if we have no one in the stands next year if we rebuild the right way and have a consistent, great young team that will contend for a decade after 2 down years.

I'm more in line with a variant of what penguin was theorizing.

Expensive contracts are sunk costs. It'll cost you assets to dump some of those players. Might as well ride them out and sell by parts. The fire sale is a two season thing.

From the fan's perspective it's quite literally the ugliest thing, as unless a miracle happens next season, it's going to be a very long and very slow rebuild.

I see no reason why Realmuto can't survive the rebuild.

He's a vital position this franchise has failed to tackle for years. I'd hold onto him, if possible.

I'd just trade him way before Yelich because Realmuto only has 3 more years of team control, which isnt bad, but that has value, and if we do a full rebuild, he will likely be gone by the time the rebuild is complete.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with retaining one guy.

My fear is that we end up going another decade in search of a catcher that isn't a total piece of trash.

I didnt say trade him 100%, just saying that his contract situation is different from Yelich's and it isnt guaranteed he would even still be here or want to be here at the end of year 3 when he's a free agent.  Also, his value might be really fucking high.

The Marlins should have signed JT Realmuto to an extension last off season. Yelich and JT are two guys you wanna build around. Yelich with a friendly contract and young age and JT with a position of need.

I don't mind going through 2013 again if it means having quality prospects come back in trades.

Remember 1998-1999? Yeah, this is going to be bruuutal. With the cherry on top being Stanton maybe putting up big numbers on another team.

yet there are folks on here who seem to think JT sucks and should be traded.
