December 17, 20187 yr It’s only December. Last year the market was slow at the beginning so by contrast all the movement this year makes it seem like we have missed the boat when in fact we haven’t. Certainly other catchers have been signed but there are still enough acceptable suitors out there. Anyone remember when Griffey was traded. That winter Jim Bowden made it known that was his primary objective heading into winter meetings. The trade didn’t happen till Feb 10.

Unless I missed something he didn’t demand a trade. He just declined the contract extension and countered with something higher than the Marlins are willing to pay. Whether he plays the next two years in Miami, Cincinnati, or Tampa Bay he will still be a FA in two years. Certainly the Dodgers could try to extend his contract during the control years. But in Tampa Bay he would be playing for a team that just won 90 games.

Once Grandal and Maldonado sign, the teams that were interested in them and Ramos and McCann and Suzuki as options in case they didn't get JT now have no other options. Let's just say Maldonado goes to the Rays and Grandal goes to the Phillies... then you still have the Padres and Dodgers and Brewers and possibly others who start thinking that they need to upgrade at catcher and at that point Realmuto literally becomes their only chance and suddenly the Marlins have leverage once again.

It is not a stretch to believe that we could not move JT BECAUSE the other teams were using other catching options in their thinking or even telling the Marlins "if you don't lower your demands, we will just have to pursue one of these other guys". We didn't blink and that is reassuring that this group is getting the hang of this.

Whenever someone signs we lose one suitor but the other teams also lose one of their fallback options, making JT even more important to them.
