Marlins' Biggest Free Agent Regret?

Featured Replies

MLB.com with an article on each team's biggest regret in terms of free agency... it could be a bad signing or even letting a guy walk in free agency. But I was shocked to see their choice for the Marlins was signing John Burkett in 1995... there are clearly better choices here... anyone wanna name some?

al leiter part deaux

Eh that was just a one-year deal for him to be a back-end-of-the-rotation starter (although he was certainly REALLY bad).

I'll say Bell with John Buck being a close runner-up.

It's not like we have a plethora of guys to choose from.

When I read the article title my first thought was Saltalamacchia and then John Buck. Then I thought of Chen and Rafael Furcal. After that it seems like whoever we signed before 2012 is an easy answer. Also was Casey Kotchman a free agent signing?

Kinda still wanna know why they think John Burkett was such a disaster.

No we don't but it sure feels like most of our free agent signings have been busts. Or maybe a better question is to ask who has been a successful signing because that's a short list.

Also, just remembered Volquez.

I thought of him too but I looked it up and he wasnt a free agent signing he was a trade for Yusmeiro Petit.

How about Rafael Furcal? He didn't do anything but sleeping.

Everyone knew Furcal was done at that point.

Well, we certainly had numerous successful signings on the 1997 team (Alou, Leiter, Brown, etc.). Other than those guys, this is what I can think of off the top my head:

Ivan Rodriguez

Carlos Delgado

Jorge Cantu

Luis Gonzalez

Javier Vazquez

Joe Borowski

Cody Ross

Wes Helms (first time)

Of course, a lot of those guys were here for only one year...

I will say, though, that this franchise has actually made a number of good trades over the years. A lot of the stars/solid players I thought of were acquired through trades. We just suck at free agency.

I saw this list the other day.  And then half the list was "team A didn't sign so and so", and I was like....uh?  That's not what this list was supposed to be.

Tazawa can be put on the list.

Salty was a bust.

Basically any free agent since 2012...

Salty was actually a pretty astute signing that offseason in terms of value - he just absolutely sucked once he started playing.  I was pretty excited about bringing Chen on board too but he has really been an anchor (and not in a good way).  I do believe I'm going to go with Heath Bell. I hated that signing then and it turned out exactly as i thought.

Oh I'm with you.

At the time, I loved the Salty signing, and thought the Chen deal was a good move, both based on their histories in Boston and Baltimore, respectively.  Then for whatever reason, both sucked here.

Plenty of free agent signings are good at the time but that doesn't change the purpose of this discussion as being a regret. It could be a good signing with bad results and thus the fans regret it happened. So yes Chen and Salty are perfect fits here.

Bell. Heath Bell. It was a dumb purchase in the first place, but the kind of money we gave him was just ludicrous.

To be fair Chen is going to be an ace next year! 30 starts, all at home!

Partin Prado.

Prado was a trade and extention, I think we traded Garrett Jones for him. That WAS ok, the extention was a show of faith after Jose died since the deal was already agreed on. I don't really blame them for it.

Umm.... Pudge was a great signing. So was Vazquez to an extent.

Delgado was an attempt to go for it one last time, wasn't terrible and we got back Jacobs who was serviceable power.

Cantu was cheap and great, he worked out at first.

Gonzalez was a "fuck it" type thing, no expectations.

CJ got us Juan Pierre so eh, ok.

Buck instead of more time for Baker sucked.

Ronny Paulino Maybe?

My worst signings? Buerhle (although we got what we expected), Reyes, BELL (FFM), and tazawa, Chen, Ziegler.

Those "Go FOR IT" signings have set this team back almost a decade. I'd say they were horrible.

Wanna laugh, I say go for it. Maximize his production if not his Value.
