May 19, 20215 yr What’s Anthony Bass trying to say here? He was very very good at blowing games in the 9th early on in the season to be tweeting about his group right after games.
May 19, 20215 yr This loss really pissed me off... I phucking hate the Phillies Jazz did his part... Hope to see some promotions soon to help this offense.... Need to score more runs so the bullpen isn't so relevant every night
May 19, 20215 yr Kind of cool that we could all tell, from hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles away, that Floro and Curtiss immediately didn't have it tonight, but Don Mattingly, from merely a few dozen feet away, left them both in long enough that they will now likely be unavailable for tomorrow's game. This team continues to win games in spite of Mattingly's mismanagement and lose games almost directly because of it. It's getting old. But at least we don't have Tony LaRussa managing the team.

I don’t blame Mattingly for this loss. Who was he supposed to bring in? I blame Severino and Hollandsworth more than I blame Mattingly.

May 19, 20215 yr We had a 3-1 lead in the 8th and he brought in the team’s setup guy who had a 0.96 ERA coming in to the night. He then brought in Curtiss to try and get out of the jam, Curtiss came in with a good ERA & 24/1 K/BB ratio. Not sure what Don did wrong, this is simply on players not getting their job done. He doesn’t know the purpose of a double switch, but if he’s not double switching Jazz out of the game, it’s basically good comedy. Floro didn’t get it done tonight. If he gets the job done, nobody is talking about this.

It's absolutely the fault of the pitchers who could not execute their pitches when necessary, but something has to be said about just how often those pitchers have been called upon to do so already. Floro is on pace to pitch in 7000 games this season, so yeah that was going to catch up sooner or later. It probably wouldn't have made much of a difference with the Marlins offense, but leaving Floro in as long as he did when he clearly wasn't pitching well was bad. Now he won't be able to pitch tomorrow either. I just want a manager who understands that today's moves may have consequences tomorrow. Bullpen games aren't great, and are an issue above Mattingly's control, but the fact that going into bullpen games, guys have already thrown a million innings that week certainly is in his control. Anyway, tonight's loss was not Mattingly's fault, but tonight's loss might not have happened if Mattingly were over in Chicago managing the White Sox instead.

I guess we all have horrid gut instincts? Personally, I should've known better when Marlin was a basket ingredient on Chopped this afternoon right before the game started.

He left Floro in too long for sure but yeah Curtiss stunk too so it wouldn't have mattered tonight even if they had scored like a normal offense. It was just extra crushing coming off that exciting Jazz bomb to take the lead so it feels that much worse. I'll take Don over LaRussa though. I swear that dude was asleep in the dugout last week when I checked in on a sox game.
May 19, 20215 yr So much for the dominant bullpen jargon. The pen order needs some serious tuning for sure. Bass & Curtiss should be inning eaters until they get going consistently. Bleier is ok, but we need a dependable lefty. That Bass tweet was odd to me. It kinda hints of justification vs the lack of offense production. Hopefully the division bell hasn’t begun. May 19, 20215 yr Bass isn't wrong, even if he might not be the right person to bring that up - bullpen has been quite solid for a few weeks now and kept us in games. As stated earlier, a decent offense and we're not even worried here.
May 19, 20215 yr Author No matter we made it to the playoffs or not this season, we're in the win-now mode, it means we won't trade our best players in the deadline no matter we're competing or not in that time. Some people think we should trade all the best relievers in the deadline if we're not compete but that should be in the period of rebuilding and not now when we're ready to compete, we should just keep all the good players in the 2021 for the 2022.

Thats from the Joe Torre school of managing that far too few talk about. (Overusing and destroying relief pitchers)

Anyway, tonight's loss was not Mattingly's fault, but tonight's loss might not have happened if Mattingly were over in Chicago managing the White Sox instead. Part of the problem is that we started using our bullpen in the 6th inning because the starter only went 5. At that point, Bender, Bleier & Bass had already been used. The best option after Floro might’ve been asking Yimi Garcia to get an uncharacteristic, 5 out save. But then you run into the same problem of him potentially not having it either last night and being unavailable tonight in the process. Don deserves blame for certain games, but tough to blame him for last night when he just made the standard move.
May 19, 20215 yr Eventually, I’d like to see Bender in the 8th or even the 9th inning. I think his stuff is that good. Even though he didn’t look that great last night himself and was bailed out by Duvall’s throw in RF. But Bender’s got the best stuff in the pen. I feel like Floro would be better in the middle innings where maybe we could even use him for more than 1 inning sometimes. But he was perfect in 8th innings before last night’s game so I’m not second guessing it.
May 19, 20215 yr This probably is going to get worse I'm thinking as this season goes on and pitchers tire more than usual with the shortened season last year. This is the year when organizational pitching depth is going to be crucial.

Did you look at his stats before last night's game? 2.26 ERA and 24 K' to 1 walk! He'd been fairly dominant before last night. I do agree with you on Bass. He can be a mop up guy.

Curtiss in the 6th, Floro 7th, Bender 8th and Yimi 9th is how I would dress it.
