No Why did they just spend like $35m to get Garcia, Soler, Stallings, Wendle, minor transactions, and trade multiple players for some of them to stop on the 1 obvious thing. A CF is coming. I think it's going to be Laureano. Which would be tremendous assuming the package isn't stupid. Oakland also has good throw-ins for the Marlins - Kemp and Trivino. There is a deal to be made there.

That's my guess. Effectively triple centerpieces (as Eder/Salas/Burdick are likely top 125 prospects) as they have no reason to move him with 4 years of control. Just like the Marlins had no reason to move Yelich with 5 years of control. They got triple centerpieces also in that deal even though they all suck. That's frankly a pass for me. I LOVE Reynolds, but he is kicked to a corner in 3 years and they need a CF. If he's cheaper, sure. Do it and deal with the defense later. But I don't see it happening for what the Pirates need.

He was insanely good in 2019/post-2021 with a ludicrously low 2021 BABIP. Is it redundant? Sure. But they can easily get rid of Aguilar or Cooper and this is an upgrade for that spot on the field. Practically, they cannot upgrade C (Stallings is good), the other of 1B/DH (you have to stick with at least one of Aguilar or Cooper w/ Lewin in minors. Very solid and good price for any team), Jazz (have to have him play), Rojas (I am ignoring Correa scenarios and he is good with a super high floor), Anderson/Wendle (could be very sneaky 3-4 WAR. Very solid with upside), Sanchez (have to have him play), and Garcia (have to have him play). The had 2 spots on the field they could upgrade - CF and the other of 1B/DH. They did one of them finally. Good for them. This is also a significantly better deal than what Castellanos or Schwarber got. Who cares about the opt-out. So he has an awesome year for $12m and opts out, so the Marlins got incredible value for a year? And if its a dud, it's less years and money than Schwarber or Castellanos so you're projected in both years and cost? I'd rather have Soler than Schwarber or Castellanos at this price, and that's acknowledging Schwarber and Castellanos are probably better players for 2022. That doesn't mean Soler doesn't go all 2019 again and is better than both (remember - see post all star and BABIP). Remember, Soler is in a contract year already. I'm a big believer in money being a motivating factor and Soler has that big time. Yup…don’t see why people are criticizing the opt outs in the deal. If he’s awesome and opts out, great…re-sign him in the off-season. I’m not particularly worried about a Cuban player that lives in Miami wanting to leave.
March 20, 20224 yr I don't know about you all but I read into this as they are done looking for a CF.

Trades don't work out sometimes. But Laureano is fantastic defensively, so you have a floor in a worst case scenario. Also, prior to PED suspension, FG thought Laureano was the 40th most valuable player in baseball. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2021-trade-value-31-to-40/

His suspension calls his entire past in to question if I'm hoping to make him my future.
March 20, 20224 yr Author Also according to Mish (yes I know), the team pivoted to Laureano and didn't care for what they saw or were asked so they moved on from him.

Jorge Polanco was popped and he's fine. It doesn't mean he's damaged forever. If they can project 66% of his current production and the trade package is reasonable, he's a good target.

March 20, 20224 yr Author Contract breakdown for Soler: 1: $12M, can opt out after year 2: $15M, can opt out after year 3: $9M, UFA after year Escalators included could bring it to $40M total.
March 20, 20224 yr They have mixed feelings on Laureano and are concerned about the 27 missed games for the suspension and so aren't comfortable giving what the A's want. That's fair but that also sounds like it could be revisited if they get the itch. Sounds like they know the cost already and are capable of getting the deal done.

Assuming no trade is made, the team may believe it can make it through April with a "test run" in center field and if it goes poorly, Laureano's available to trade for in May. Or it goes well and they say "ok nvm!" and forward they go with Avisail or Sanchez in center.

March 20, 20224 yr 12 million dollars for a guy with a negative war last year but they couldn’t come up with 20 for Castellanos or Schwarber? Or 18-19 for Marte? Ridiculous and does absolutely nothing to move the needle.
March 20, 20224 yr Lou makes good points. Does anyone think De La Cruz can be a success in CF? A gamble after a good 35% of a season, but still very good numbers offensively and damn good defense too.

So there is a decent chance he opts in for 2023 unless he has a huge year in 2022. Opting in for 2024 would mean he has a poor 2023. So in all likelihood this is a 2 year deal.
March 20, 20224 yr For what its worth on the Sportsbooks - O/U wins before Soler -76.5 O/U wins after Soler - 76.5
