March 20, 20224 yr I feel the Marlins are better than last year but not enough to be at the top of our division and thus not enough to be a serious contender. And I also believe there were very realistic ways to make them a more serious contender and that them not doing so was incompetence on their part. That's my issue with all of this. If this was the best we could realistically do I'd be more optimistic but I feel their own poor decisions are the reason we're not better than we should be.
March 20, 20224 yr If they trade for Reynolds they can make Soler the full time DH, use Aguilar at 1B and trade Cooper 🙂 lol

I will say to be fair that the rest of the teams in the division are not without issues either. The Phillies' starting rotation stinks (especially now with Wheeler having injury issues), and let's not forget that deGrom is kind of a question mark for the Mets given his recent injury issues (I also think their lineup is a question mark, especially if Lindor continues to suck). The Braves will likely be really good, but let's keep in mind that they did only win 88 games last year and then just got smoking hot in the playoffs (also remains to be seen if Olson can fill Freeman's shoes). Not saying we aren't the fourth best team in the division; we are, but I don't think the teams ahead of us are invincible by any stretch.
March 20, 20224 yr Just realized that if they add a back end reliever they'll have checked off all their offseason to do list items... -upgrade catcher -upgrade bullpen -add to the offense -add an OF -spend money in free agency -extend Alcantara Add in Joey Wendle who provides multiple benefits and they can point to all of this and say they accomplished all their goals and thus call it a successful offseason. Which is all well and good until you realize they never did one move big enough to put them over the top.

They might have there mind set on Laureano. Since he has to serve his suspension, there would be no urgency to trade for him now so they might just see how things go for a month.

Well yea this is almost always, especially the Phillies and Mets who always find a way to shit the bed. I just thought we were capable of pushing a little harder so that we don't have to rely on luck and prayers again this season. I prayed for urgency last summer and I wish there was more of it right now.
March 20, 20224 yr Honestly I would not be surprised if the entire division was a shit show again. There is always hype at the beginning of the year and it always ends up one of the worst divisions.

I mean Oakland will have less than zero desire for Aguilar or Cooper. Diaz I guess just depends on how they value him from a prospect standpoint. You'd have to independently trade Cooper/Aguilar somewhere else.
March 20, 20224 yr I said yesterday that the Castellanos signing may have woken up Sherman, wouldn't shock me if he told Kim she better get someone today. And with that said, it would make a lot of sense to get a trade done within the next 24 hours because this signing clearly puts the roster in a state that needs some sorting. Would love to know that Kim made this signing with an upcoming trade already in motion.
March 20, 20224 yr I also like Laureano. Doesn’t have to be Reynolds. Just need to get a CF. It’s too important of a spot especially in our park.

Getting Aguilar or Cooper could serve as a placeholder for a season or 2 that they could easily flip to a contender at the deadline. That is something the A's have been known to do when they are not a contender.

March 20, 20224 yr Some of the takes in here are dumb and emotional. This is a good move. It's fine. Soler has WAY more upside than Aguilar or Cooper. He was insanely good in 2019/post-2021 with a ludicrously low 2021 BABIP. Is it redundant? Sure. But they can easily get rid of Aguilar or Cooper and this is an upgrade for that spot on the field. Practically, they cannot upgrade C (Stallings is good), the other of 1B/DH (you have to stick with at least one of Aguilar or Cooper w/ Lewin in minors. Very solid and good price for any team), Jazz (have to have him play), Rojas (I am ignoring Correa scenarios and he is good with a super high floor), Anderson/Wendle (could be very sneaky 3-4 WAR. Very solid with upside), Sanchez (have to have him play), and Garcia (have to have him play). The had 2 spots on the field they could upgrade - CF and the other of 1B/DH. They did one of them finally. Good for them. This is also a significantly better deal than what Castellanos or Schwarber got. Who cares about the opt-out. So he has an awesome year for $12m and opts out, so the Marlins got incredible value for a year? And if its a dud, it's less years and money than Schwarber or Castellanos so you're projected in both years and cost? I'd rather have Soler than Schwarber or Castellanos at this price, and that's acknowledging Schwarber and Castellanos are probably better players for 2022. That doesn't mean Soler doesn't go all 2019 again and is better than both (remember - see post all star and BABIP). Remember, Soler is in a contract year already. I'm a big believer in money being a motivating factor and Soler has that big time. Others have said it but - if this is it, it's likely a disaster. That is however, assuming Sanchez/Garcia can't play CF. If they can, the jokes on us and we're idiots and they are geniuses with figuring that out with presumably Avisail. Regardless, all roads lead to CF. If Reynolds is off the board (which I always felt as why would they move him), Laureano is very good (4.7 WAR per 600 PA for career) and Brandon Marsh is an awesome dart throw (Jazz/Sanchez/Luzardo level player). They have the pitching to easily get either and then all of a sudden, the team looks pretty good. I also don't think a RP is needed, but that would be a nice upgrade if one exists. I'm out on Kenley for 1/$16. Those 65 IP aren't worth 1/5th the payroll. No thanks. Their mistake here wasn't signing like Tepera. Put Cabrera in the bullpen to open the year. They'll be fine here. They have a lot of arms and more coming. TLDR - Solid move, get a high impact F'ing CF already

He is high risk / high reward. I think most of us here just wanted a little bit more certainty.
March 20, 20224 yr 2 minutes ago, SilverBullet said: Would Laureano make us a contender? No, but Laureano + some of Jazz, Sanchez, Luzardo, Cabrera, Sixto, Meyer, or Bleday breakouts and/or Garcia hitting 3.5+ WAR statcast potential, Soler hitting like 2019, Hernandez having a mini-breakout to a 2+ WAR and/or some injury luck may Laureano gets them closer - that's unarguable. Create a winning culture. Create a place players want to play. Create a team people want to see. Field a better team so your own players play better and aren't depressed. It's so much more than deciding if you're a contender right away. It's building a product top to bottom. Look at Minnesota and Colorado and Texas - they have no chance at winning this year and are spending because they appreciate their fans and are telegraphing we are getting things set up to succeed. They need to get a major CF. It's that easy. It's a broken record for 5 months now. Get a longterm CF as you didn't get one with Brinson, Harrison, Scott, Misner, Sierra, or VVM. You missed on 6 guys. Trade pitching. Do it.
