If they want to save money there are other routes to take as well other than above. Those signings i guess would be too gosh darn expensive so i guess they could negate Rodon and just promote Meyer now but even just signing the closer, signing castellanos and firing Don would probably have this team close to the Mutts record at this point. Not even kidding. This is why I think Ng kinda sucks as a GM. Reynolds and Bednar with Eury/Cabrera/Bleday/Morisette (blow it out!), and sign Joc Pederson for a year. I am cheating and this moves payroll to $90m, but we need some hypothetical liberty here. She hasn't made the obvious move for a CF, but Castellanos is making far too much money so that's a pass for sure. Even with a larger budget, he's a pass. Rodon would have been interesting if they traded Pablo for Brandon Marsh. It's CF, CF, CF. That's her problem. With the larger problem being why is payroll sub-$80m the 5th year into an ownership group, after a new TV deal and naming rights. This isn't Ng's fault. This is a Sherman issue and he deserves 90% of the blame here for not going for it with these young pitchers.

I’d rather have an elite closer for 16 mill than spend 24 million (on longer term deals) on Soler/Garcia. Our recipe to winning games goes through our pitching first a foremost. Trying to build a team on pitching with a closer that throws 91 is building a roster without a vision.
May 5, 20224 yr Author Shawn Armstrong, Soler, Garcia = $25 million AAV Other ways they could’ve went about it that would be better: Kenley Jansen, Tommy Pham = 23.5 million Kendall Graveman, Eduardo Escobar, Tommy Pham = 25.5 million This doesn’t even include options of just signing 1 quality player who you can actually count on with the 25ish million rather than trying to find 3 subpar players CF’er most certainly isn’t her/our only issue Edited May 5, 20224 yr by marlins_09

That is a really dumb take and an emotional response coming off a blown save - when the team is .500, with a positive run differential, and looks like a top 10 bullpen once they are full strength. Sulser/Scott was an EXCELLENT move. The problem is....... No arguments about building on pitching, and this is where we point out Floro/Meyer/Cabrera need to be on the big league team and throw your best 13 pitchers at all times. Trade Eury as the centerpiece for a CF (someone has to go) which is effectively, building with pitching. 8 hours ago, marlins_09 said: Shawn Armstrong, Soler, Garcia = $25 million AAV Other ways they could’ve went about it that would be better: Kenley Jansen, Tommy Pham = 23.5 million Kendall Graveman, Eduardo Escobar, Tommy Pham = 25.5 million This doesn’t even include options of just signing 1 quality player who you can actually count on with the 25ish million rather than trying to find 3 subpar players CF’er most certainly isn’t her/our only issue ......but the best scenario you presented is the one they did. I agree CF isn't her only issue, but it is BY FAR THE BIGGEST ONE, with the secondary one being *if* the decision is made to commit to Soler, they really needed to move one of Aguilar/Cooper for a better suited player. Namely a 1B/2B/3B type who hits lefties a little hard. Replacing DL-BABIP-C and Aguilar/Cooper with a stud CF and platoon 1B/3B who can help Cooper versus RHP and Anderson/Jazz/Wendle versus LHP makes a TON more sense. For that I fault her (A LOT) - remember I was the angriest person here in March with Das as we both saw the writing on the wall and it is literally unfolding exactly how anticipated. Maybe I am through my cycles of depression as Anger happened a month ago when they didn't get a CF opening day and it seems to be catching up to many here with some Soler/Garcia/Aguilar/Stallings/Rojas struggles and some bad 1 run losses. I just think it's a bit too much anger and mainly misdirected (should be to cheap ownership first! The core of the problem!), but I digress.

This brings up a good point - for all the emphasis on pitching this team had going into this season they left off one of the most vital parts - a shutdown closer. Spending EITHER the Avi money OR Soler money on a proven closer would have made 100% more sense as it "completes" one half of the team and getting something completed would have helped Ng as she can only focus on one thing at a time.

Spending 20% of your payroll on 60 innings of Kenley versus 60 innings of Louis Head is an astronomically stupid decision. The concept of a shutdown closer is antiquated. That is a "Don Mattingly management" level of decision making, which is ironic as you're bitching about Mattingly but want to make a Mattingly style acquisition. These cannot be reconciled. They win yesterday if Okert pitches. It's that easy. Bring in the lefty versus - wait for it - lefties. They have the arms. This is a BULLPEN USAGE issue so please go to the fire Don thread as you are in the wrong place with your frustration here. If you want to bump payroll to say $130, you can start with those super duper luxury scenarios for a Kenley arms. They are a long ways from there. A better idea if we are playing in the payroll sandbox that is Sherman.... would be Tepera + Duffy for $13m, and trade Pablo for B. Marsh. Feel free to kick Soler off the team in that scenario. That then makes sense as you have solved CF, gotten another bullpen arm, gotten a SP for cheap to eventually replace Pablo and trust the kids (who will run out of innings) to get you to the summer, don't have 1B/DH redundancy... and you still have $3-5m to spend on a bench 1B/2B/3B to hit lefties to have a smarter roster overall. If you want to blame Ng for not doing something like that, HAVE AT IT. I will join you. But Kenley is a far far far worse decision than status quo. It's a kneejerk reaction to a blown save.

May 5, 20224 yr The irony is the Marlins have all this pitching but then they dont actually make all efforts to win effectively by emphasizing defense first players and have pretty much only good to great defenders at what? 2 positions? Playing guys all the fuck out of where they should be playing because they were only able to attract the exact same type of free agent essentially (position wise) to what you already had. This team has 3 guys that SHOULD be DH only. But hey when you are cheap as fuck, you get what you get. Not spending your prospect depth is one thing, thats a gigantic whole argument. But in the end, the manager makes dumb decisions so its generally a moot point most nights. This team will be good to great because of its starting pitching. When they are on, they are really good. When they are not on, the offense most nights might struggle because they are boom or bust with no real big reliable bat in the middle that makes other staffs shake in fear. Its why they SHOULD have signed Correa (who from all reports has changed A LOT of the culture in the Twins clubhouse and look at where they are now) That was THE move to make and let the rest solve itself. But ownership is too fucking cheap, always has been (doesnt really matter the owner, maybe its in the South Florida water), so they were never going above a certain dollar amount, which is frustrating for fans and is such a weak mentality! Ng has made a few mistakes, I'm curious how much control she really has and how much is really held with Denbo, especially on the prospect side. (Fuck Denbo btw).

Why is there bad OF defense with a pitching heavy team, while emphasizing Stallings/Wendle? Why has a prospect trade not been made? Those are both 1 move - a CF! Why is Don using the bullpen terribly when they *have* the arms? Pitch lefties against lefties? Why are they so cheap with THIS team where something wasn't added on top, even if you still signed Garcia/Soler? No Aguilar, Soler, Garcia, Pablo, and Bass is the same money as Correa, B. Marsh, and a $5m innings eater or platoon bat to help Anderson/Jazz/Wendle against LHP. In this scenario, they would need to rely more heavily on Meyer/Cabrera/Lewin/Burdick/Bleday/Head/Poteet/Holloway/DLC this year and who here is willing to take that bet that a few of them are good enough? It's mostly ownership for giving Ng an impossible assignment, but yes she has made some missteps with no CF being the glaring one. It's fun though everyone else caught up to our March rage - even if some of it is misdirected at Ng as most roads lead to BRUCE and in-game Don decisions.

What's more - thats nearly 30mil per season that will be just "gone" for at least 3 more seasons that will not be available to be used to actually bring in a bat. Awful management of what money she was given and utter failure to assess what THIS lineup needs. You're giving her waaaay too much leniency.

What do we call over reacting that money is "completely wasted" over a 24 game stretch, with the understanding the two guys you are complaining about are 70 points below their career BABIPs during this small stretch? What's that called? However, yes there is some terrible redundancy with Soler/Aguilar/Cooper for 2 spots so that is pretty bad management until they get a CF and sort that out. It's the same broken record. The problem is the lack of a CF - it's not that they choose to go with Soler or Garcia who are fine in a vacuum. MORE was needed and they didn't do the MORE to complete the team. I do give Ng some fault for that. But, is this Ng trigger-shy on the prospect trade, or unreasonable payroll expectations. Where do you fall with those two? We blame Ng alone? This is like 90% blame to Sherman for me. And yes - putting together a world series championship calibre team with under an $80m payroll is an impossible assignment. 2021 playoff teams: BOS $187m (6) NYY $203m (2) TB 76m (26) CHW $141m (15) HOU $189m (5) ATL $148m (14) LAD $262m (1) SF $165m (11) MIL $106m (19) STL $168m (9) Tampa has never won despite their success to note. That's 8/15 top spenders making the playoffs, including four of top six. $106m (MIL) would represent a close to $30m raise on the Marlins currently team, or basically one Carlos Correa....... or Rodon and Tepera...... or Rodon, Tepera, trading Pablo and Bass for Marsh, and signing someone else. You can do A LOT with that money. P ayroll needs to go up or we're going to be in .500 purgatory forever - and that's not due to Soler/Garcia. That's due to the only other way to contend is developing likely 6+ homegrown superstars all at once. The probability that happens is low. But this could happen for the Marlins, just circle 2024 or 2025 and maybe the 7th or 8th year of the rebuild looks good? Is a 7/8 year rebuild acceptable to the fan base solely because Sherman is cheap?

Recency bias in a rough blown save is the answer here. Kenley wouldn't make everything better with this team at all. Not even close.

Maybe for like Jazz/Sanchez/Luzardo/Rogers as they are 1-2 year players effectively and they should have a longer leash to get their feet wet, but that Garcia BB/K needs to solve itself next 6 weeks, as well as the BABIP corrections for everyone.. or then we start figuring out why the hell is nothing dropping when they are hitting it and we start thinking about is the contact bad so there is more to this story? We'll see. Frankly, the whole team is a wild BABIP explosion good/bad right now besides Wendle. A big see-saw is coming. Everyone needs to chill. Baseball is a marathon. But get a CF like tomorrow.

My dislike of DLC is due to him having a .382 BABIP, which is strongly suggestive he is likely an empty .250/.300/.375+ hitter (as he has little slugging potential) which does not cut in the outfielder for an average defender. I've already said get him a game a week against RHP instead of Garcia until he gets right, but that's about it besides spot duty/Sanchez off day. It's 24 games. Chill out about small sample sizes already. Also DLC was just optioned to AAA so he can outpace Burdick and Bleday now.
