Which reliever would you bring in instead?  The next guy in would probably walk in the tying and winning runs.

It seems like all the relievers throw a ton of balls and either get behind in counts or walk people.  Even when they aren't allowing runs, there are a tons of base runners, which mostly means luck when not giving up runs.

The bullpen is garbage.

overall, in THIS season, Scott has done the best job at pitching in the 9th.  Bender was an absolute train wreck and Sulser stunk as well.  I'd still give Scott another go at the 9th.  Every closer is going to have a bad day and considering they've tried numerous others in that role and failed multiple times, Scott deserves another shot as well.  He's had a few 1-2-3 9th innings which is more than we can say about some of the other trash that's tried so far. 

That said, I'd still love to acquire a top flight closer.

For every reliever/closer it's about using them properly so this goes back to Donnie. I'd imagine a more capable manager could get more out of the bullpen we have now.

That and you have this weird issue.  People saw these relievers do great last year, and automatically assumed they would still be well great.

Um, relievers are fickle and are often good one year bad the next.  

Late inning high leverage guys get paid for a reason.  You either have to develop that (Marlins have no really proven good at developing this 'yet', or you have to pay for it)  We know that Sherman isnt going to pay for it, so, scouting and development it is!

And aside from starting pitching thats been rather lackluster.

 

This is on Bruce Sherman for being cheap.

Gary Denbo for being a stubborn prick.

Kim Ng for just rolling over and letting others dictate what is happening.

 

And of course

Don Mattingly for not having learned how to manage a bullpen in what?  15 years as a Major League manager?

Agree with most of this. The opposite applies with relievers as well. Bass was terrible last year. Pretty good this year. Relievers are just fickle. I also have noticed some trend of relievers going to another team and performing at a much higher level than they did with the Marlins. Ryne Stanek, Jarlin Garcia, Alex Vesia. Donnie has no idea what he's doing.

thats not just a Marlins thing though.

 

Thats industry wide.  Its why I've said until a reliever is good for 2-3 years with at least 2 solid years back to back, i dont trust them as reliable headed into a season.

I've seen way too many guys go from great to trash in the course of a winter to say otherwise!

Your right but then, seriously asking, how should a GM build a bullpen? Purposely collect a bunch of relievers who sucked last year and stay away from everyone who was good last year? 

Notwithstanding the inability to pay for established relievers, Ng put together this years pen with relievers who had success last year... it's hard to say that that's the wrong thing to do right?

I'm saying this inexact science on reliever success makes it a real bitch for building a bullpen.

Well you'd LIKE to have 1-2 guys you KNOW you should be able to trust that have proven it for a while.

At least if you are serious about winning.

You'd like to take a couple of guys from the minors and have a good idea of what you have with them.

Paying really anything for a relief pitcher in the offseason via trade that isnt established isnt really smart.  You make that move middle of season as bullpens are easiest to fix generally.

 

I just dont think its wise to invest assets to acquire an arm that is late 20s or older that has only had one real good season as a relief pitcher.  Bad use of resources tbh.   Especially when you cant spend your way out of problems.
