Bleier traded to Boston for Barnes

Featured Replies

Barnes is lights out when he puts it together so I’m all for it. Bleier always seemed to give up a home run when the game was on the line.

Yeah but it’s also to offset the buyout for his 2024 option. It’s a good trade IMO

This is a bit of a slick trade here. While he has struggled I think Bleier was pretty much a lock in our bullpen so I don't think anyone thought he'd be going anywhere. To trade him for somewhat of a flyer with high upside is kinda fun, kinda genius. I like this. Worst case scenario is Barnes is only as bad as Bleier's bad days. Potentially great move, a lateral move at worse.

Miami will also get cash considerations on top of this reliever-for-reliever swap, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. Mish has that sum at about $1MM, to offset a portion of the $7.55MM salary that Barnes is owed in 2023 and the $2.5MM buyout on his $8MM club option for 2024. Bleier is due $3.5MM this season and carries a $3.75MM club option (or $250K buyout) for 2024.

We are taking on more money than we are getting back. This isn't financially motivated at all.  If Mel can fix him, this will be a great trade.  Bleier is very mediocre at best, anyway.

Wow Barnes has been around longer than I thought. This trade is meh for me. I don't have much faith Mel will fix him if nobody else has since 2014. It's whatever.

He was good in 2021!

I know but being a big leaguer for nearly 10 seasons and not figuring it out is kinda a red flag for me. Best of luck to Barnes but I still think it's a meh trade.

Worth noting that he was pretty good in high and medium leverage last year. In low leverage he was pretty mediocre. So, bad in garbage time, but good when it mattered.

Oh geez. Don't you want the Marlins to win more games? I guess you're one of those who would prefer to see how many games the Marlins might win in 3 years when Bleier gets his first real shot, totally cool with losing 95 games this season and next with the bullpen blowing 2 runs a game.

Soooo like the Marlins who were good in 97 and 03 but garbage every other year?

The Sox have been my A.L. team for years and I've watched Barnes it seems forever and most of it hasn't been impressive.

He maybe a reclamation project at this point hopefully they can fix him enough to trade

so half a season in 9 years of MLB?

Edit:  Although I have an eerie feeling someone would still feel the same way about Rogers with the same track record = )

I'm good dude, I got my Cappe jersey on right now and I'm jerking off to my photoshopped copy of him on MLB The Show '27.

Yea, I took the easy joke.

Actually looking at the player now, he is 32 and had a poor season last year. He also makes a lot of money apparently. There is a reason he was DFA’d last week.

Bleier isn’t good either but I feel like free agent relievers may have offered better value, if we are actually spending.
