Jorge Soler player option

Featured Replies

I think he just needs a couple days off that aren't just in the schedule. He and DLC lead the team with 100 games played each, probably just needs a breather.

.363 OPS since his last homer, which was the first game after the break ended.

I am still hoping even if he does finish out strong that he opts out. Would be better to allocate that money towards another hitter.

He’s been absolutely terrible since the ASG, even worse than segura. I’d say there’s a decent shot he takes that player option now?

Unless he really shits the bed for the remainder of the season, I don't think there's a chance he doesn't opt out at age 31. He knows his clock is ticking and he needs one more payday. .800 OPS will probably be enough up entice sometime to pony up

I'm not concerned if Soler opts out. Id rather spend that money elsewhere tbh. I still think they need some more contact/speed combo guys in that lineup. Gap power would play well in the park.

Bell is whatever. He's done weirdly well since coming here but he's old and could drastically regress next year like he had been before he came here. Still...he's more consistent than Soler which is important in this weak lineup so yeah I'd probably take him over Soler and I think Bell would be crazy to not take his player option.

Edit: I really hope Soler opts out and goes elsewhere

Yeah Bell's option is for $16.5 million. Even with as well as he has hit since coming here, he is still OPSing just .747 on the year (and he wasn't great in 2022 either). There is next to no chance any team offers him that kind of money. I would be surprised if he doesn't opt in.

Bell is 31

he's a bit of a big boy though and a 31yr old big boy in MLB doesn't usually age as well.  I'm sure he's going to opt-in for next season so I'm legit hoping he continues hitting like he has during his time with us because that would be pretty damn great.  Some guys just click in certain parks for whatever reason and he's actually clicked during the rough part of the schedule so maybe that bodes well for next season - or maybe he just got on a hot streak.  Either way, we likely will see Bell in a Marlins uni next season so I hope he does very well.

What I do NOT want to see is 30million tied up in Soler and Bell next season.  Soler has exceeded my expectations this season but he's regressed quite a bit despite hitting a random homerun here or there.  It's no secret I've never been a big fan of his as Lou (who seemed to love Soler) and I had some spirited debates over Soler (thank God Soler didn't play CF too).

Anyway, Jazz needs to be taught to just focus on making good contact, Bell needs to keep doing what he's doing, and they need to find someone via FA or trade who can bring some more consistent contact/speed/and gap power to the lineup next year and this offense could be pretty decent I think - especially if they friggin' give Edwards a real chance (I think he could be a fabulous leadoff guy for us).

I was kind of disappointed with Soler last year, but he’s been nice this year.

Not sure how anyone can watch this team and not want him back next year at a reasonable salary.

This offense goes back to being the very worst in baseball again without him.

The only concern to me is that both him and Bell should be playing DH, but I really don’t care if they provide offense.

because his career numbers suggest he's not that good outside of a couple seasons? Also, Bell will likely be here which means he should be the DH.  This team would be fine (and probably better) if they found someone with speed who can regularly make contact into those giant sexy gaps out there. One of these days they'll actually try to get some of those guys on this team.  We have a multitude of guys who can't really play defense and would be better off served being a DH.

Just try and remember how awful he was last year here.  There's no guarantee he'll be anything close to what he was this year.  He'll likely fall back to somewhere in-between.  Either way, the most important thing is they cut ties with Avi for good.  He doesn't fit in anywhere on this team in the future and running him out there just beause he's owned money only costs wins.

Somewhere in-between last year and this year would be a good thing.

He got hurt last year too.

His floor, if healthy, seems to be 30 HR’s with a solid OBP. This organization isn’t just going to find that anywhere.

I do agree that we need more speed and his name should be Xavier Edwards at SS.

We also need the power though, and I don’t see many (or any) alternatives to Soler at this point.

Avi didn't fit when the deal was signed haha.

Yeah these comments are insane.  35 home runs and 800+ ops makes him arguable the most dangerous hitter on the team.  Lets get rid of him!  I hope he leaves!  Yes, he is a very streaky hitter, but guess what, this line up is full of terrible hitters.  You don't get rid of a guy like Soler unless he's a luxury piece and you can reasonably get someone better (who the hell do you think this team is gonna sign that will do better than those numbers??)

Platoon him! Face only lefties!

yep....THIS season....he's had many years of crap or meh performance as well...and you also literally agreed that he's very streaky and more than anything this lineup needs consistent hitters who don't have such highs and lows.  you are literally buying high on the back of a good season when he was pretty putrid the year before and was really really bad before going to atlanta at the deadline the year before that (funny that, right?  magically starts hitting when he gets to Atlanta)

and when i say you're buying high - this is literally the 2nd best season he's ever had after that lone huge season most of us remember from him in KC.

his career war over ten seasons is a whopping 5.9. the odds are very strong that he'll regress to something in the neighborhood of 0.5-1 war next season.

Would I rather have him than Avi on the team?  you bet your ass I would - but I'm not going to be mad if Soler opts out and goes elsewhere for a contract with more years though AND the FO does their homework and signs/trades for a guy who has the attributes that would play well in our home park.  You'll have full seasons from Bell and Burger and, if he can get out of his own way and stop swinging for the moon or being a massive injury risk, Jazz and those 3 should more than account for the power void left by Soler.

Hopefully Soler stays but I doubt he will.

yeah, i'm hoping he will stay and Avi is let go but I think the team can still be fine or even better if they sign/trade for the right replacement. that's just kinda been my whole point this entire time - people are seemingly acting like he's peak Miguel Cabrera or something and we're letting this dynamic player just walk away.

We should probably try to get both Bell and Soler to stay. Otherwise we need to replace them... the replacement for at least one of them is Avifail

Bell will stay

Soler...probably will opt out and get a multi-year deal with us or elsewhere. I think it's about 50/50 he'll be here next season mostly contingent on whether some team is going to offer him something wild like 20mil per for 3-4 seasons..which....no

#1 offseason priority for me is Avi being released.  Getting him off the team and his bat out of the everyday lineup could be argued to be nearly as impactful as signing a decent FA.

Here's a thought - what other bad contracts are out there that could possibly be of some use to us?

Because we know it's doubtful they just release Avi and eat all the money (minus the minimum if he's picked up) - the likely thing is we try and swap another bad contract, IMO.
