Miami finished the regular season as the 5th seed, while Philadelphia ended up 4th. The Phillies will host the entire three-game Wild Card series as the higher seed. The first team to reach two wins will advance to the NLDS to take on the Braves. Atlanta is currently enjoying a bye, after finishing the season with the best record in MLB. During the regular season, Miami ended up going 7-6 against the Phillies, with a 4-2 record in Philly. Four of those victories for the Marlins came in one-run games, which was the best one-run record in MLB this season. The Marlins ended up going a stellar 33-14 in one-run games in 2023, while Philadelphia was 29-24 in that area. Luis Arráez is expected to play in Tuesday’s series opener, in what will be his third taste of playoff action. In 2019 as a member of the Twins, the batting champion went 5-11 with four doubles in the ALDS against the Yankees. Arráez only appeared once during the final week of the regular season, as he was battling an ankle injury. Game 1 will feature a matchup of Jesus Luzardo vs Zack Wheeler. With Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez both unavailable, manager Skip Schumaker has elected to go with Luzardo for the important opening game. Braxton Garrett was another option, but he will instead throw in Wednesday's second game. Luzardo made two starts against the Phillies this season, and he picked up wins in both of the contests. The lefty struck out 14 hitters across 12.1 innings pitched. Luzardo's first start against Philly this year came at Citizens Bank Park, where he allowed a home run off the bat of Kyle Schwarber. While the slugger won that battle over Luzardo, the 26-year old has kept Schwarber under control otherwise for the most part. Schwarber has two hits in nine career at-bats against Luzardo, and he has been punched out five times. In addition to Schwarber, Luzardo has also had success against Bryce Harper (1-9 with 5 strikeouts), J.T. Realmuto (1-13 with 5 strikeouts) and Trea Turner (0-8 with 2 strikeouts). Bryson Stott however is one guy who has gotten to Luzardo frequently, with four hits in his five at-bats. Stott also knocked in a pair of runs during that small sample size. Nick Castellanos also has found some success against Luzardo in his career, with two hits and a pair of walks in nine plate appearances. Wheeler had a strong season for the Phillies and pitched well against the Marlins in his three appearances in 2023. Wheeler allowed six runs in 18 innings of work, while walking four and striking out 17. The veteran came away with no-decisions in all three outings, with Philadelphia going 1-2 in those games. Wheeler has had success against some of Miami's key hitters, including Jake Burger (1-6 with 2 strikeouts), Jon Berti (3-16 with 6 strikeouts) and Arráez (2-9 with 1 strikeout). Yuli Gurriel is 0-6 in his career against Wheeler, but it is unlikely he will face off against the righty in this game. However, there are a couple of bats in Miami's lineup with some solid career numbers against Wheeler, including Josh Bell. The veteran first baseman has a career slash line of .286/.342/.486 with three home runs and six RBI against Wheeler. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has likewise found success against Wheeler, with three hits in ten at-bats. Chisholm picked up a triple and a home run, to go along with two RBI and two walks in those plate appearances against Wheeler. The first pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. ET on ESPN.
